This video documents day number one of a three day spring 2024 fly fishing adventure to tributary rivers of the Bitterroot River. Due to regulations governing western Montana there are limited options until late May, and thus larger waters are the only game in town. Join me for this and future fly fishing videos.
This channel was created to share my love of fly fishing and wilderness adventure through a video record of both my local and overland trips. Most of the action will occur in my home state of Montana with regular trips planned for Idaho and Wyoming. Additionally, the channel provides an opportunity for me to exercise creativity and keep my mind engaged via the content development and production process. I encourage anyone with questions or ideas to contact me directly via DM or through the comments. I enjoy hearing from folks and interacting on topics far and wide.
Another important reason I created this channel was to counterbalance the current genre of fly fishing videos that are overly protective of waters they fish. I’ve seen too many videos whereby the creators show no inclination to even mention the states they fish. This is done in what appears to be a misguided attempt to limit pressure on their favorite waters. I believe that to be a flawed argument. Given that the reach of even a very successful video is pretty insignificant, and couple that with the fractional percentage of viewers who can or desire to fish these sports, you have a tiny number of potential anglers to these “hallowed” waters. Add to that a fishing season of conservatively 6 months meaning that the small number of individuals who watched the video and actually pursued the waters in question would be spread over 180 days of fishing. Moreover, most waters have miles of fishable access and most of those individuals would be catch and release fishing persons. If you keep connecting all of the dots it’s objectively clear that providing some location information doesn't negatively impact the productivity or experiential quality of the fishery.
My approach will be to provide some region specific info in the video and/or description along with some verbal or visual easter eggs in the video. From there, if a person is interested in the water fished, they can take those clues and research online maps to determine the stream or river that was fished. This process will invariably allow anglers to find their own underfished blue lines which will ironically achieve what the anti-spot burning zealots wanted all along: that being increased angler dispersion. There are too many people who get a couple weeks a year to explore and being selfish with location information can detract from personal and family memories that can last a lifetime. I won’t take part in that because it defies reasoning as explained above, and it’s fraught with bad karma. So feel free to do your research and if you think you’ve dialed the stream name, feel free to DM me and I certainly will confirm if you are correct. Ultimately this should be about having fun and spreading joy beyond ourselves.
