Thanks for all of these great videos on western swing. Thank you Eddie for the steel episodes. For the numbers minded out there (like me)... I'm pretty sure Eddie's tuning is an A6 (low to high): F# A C# E F# A C# E 6 1 3 5 6 1 3 5

A really good cheat for any steel guitar: Tune it to a major-minor combo on six strings with minor on the bottom and major on the top. Add two strings on top and bottom and put the Reese Anderson style modification in both places. So at the top of the six string tuning, you come down 8 half note intervals and up 3. Same thing at the bottom in reverse - up 8 and down 3. Now you've got a tuning in which you can play one string at a time and never get lost or confused. With the top and bottom added, you can now emulate any sound you'd ever want to hear on steel guitar 😊

+Robert Huston That's very exciting - so valuable! These are definitely valuable enough to ask for donations. Sadly, as with so many musicians, my budget is very tight, but if you link me to your donations page, I'll try to send at least a couple of dollars to show my support. What you're doing here is an awesome service and it is very much appreciated! :-)

nalunoa, I so appreciate your thoughts. I produce all of this content out of my own pocket. I could expand it and offer more segments if I just got a few dollars from each of my subscribers. So, you feel they are valuable enough to contribute a few dollars per segment?
@nalunoa
@nalunoa 8 лет назад
Wow! Your commitment and generosity in this mission are most noble & venerable. I do think that they're worth a few dollars per segment; the problem is that if it's a per segment thing, with my budget and the budgets of many other musicians I know, it doesn't come down as much to whether it's worth it or not, but if the money's there, and too often it's not. So per segment might limit your reach and the overall benefits of the series. Again, not because it's not worth it. Maybe you might want to consider a donate what you like per segment starting at $.99 or so, or something like if you donate at least a few bucks (I don't know, maybe 4 or 5) you get to watch all the segments for 6 months or something. I would just hat for your viewer ship to go down, because this series is so awesome & hepful. And maybe I"m wrong: maybe my musical sisters & brothers could find a way to cough up the dough more regularly thank I think, or could - don't really know. I will say that as a non-pedal steel player, I have also benefited greatly from segments from other msuicians, such as the guitar one from Whit. But that said, if I had to pay, even a small fee for each, I"m sure I would be more judicious and only watch the NPSG stuff. Just trying to help by providing my point of view here. Don't know if I"m at all right. Thank you and all the contributors so much again ( for my part, epsecially the great Mr. Rivers!). :)

Thank you so much for these videos of Eddie. I play a '53 Dual Pro which I assumed was the same scale length as Eddie's Deluxe 8, (same A6 tuning). Now I'm not so sure. Reason being, the 2,3, 5 slant Eddie shows that gets him a dom 13 chord, gets me a dom 9!!!!
@MangoDaVille

These lessons are off the chain! Real insider stuff. Only problem I have is I'm using a C6 and I can't access some of those lower chords he demonstrates that are a prelude to the next chord or string of chords. Guess I'll have to tune to A6 to try and unravel Eddie's secrets. Presently it's a skosh frustrating and over my head especially when he executes more complex licks. However it is certainly worth reviewing over and over again to secure this beautiful jazzy western swing style of playing. Super thanks Mr. Huston and Mr. Rivers!!!!!!!!! And yes, I'm happy to donate and that is sayin something for a senior on a fixed income and never enough gigs! Ha, ha. Please let me know where I can send something. Johnny Kealoha Pal, most Hawaiian lap.

Thank you Johnny, It's great to hear from you and your comments. Yes, Eddie uses the A6 tuning because he says it's "meatier" than the C6. But, whatever, It's great to know WSR is helpful and educational. I'll let you know about where and how donations can be sent and THANK YOU so much!!!!

if you like c6 tuning you could try an 8 string to get more low end notes, and even try the low c6 tuning. [drop the lowest string a whole step] I've got mine tuned F A C E G A C E - you may want to try that one out. Cheers!

Wonderful information! Eddie is superb! Would it be possible for you to make (or provide) the specific information regarding Eddie's A6 tuning? Specifically the tuning, the gauge/diameter for each string, and whether the string is Plain or Wound. (For the Fender Deluxe 8 guitar scale length like Eddie is playing.) It would be so helpful and very much appreciated.

How is Eddie tuned here? He previously said its A6 and the 3rd and 7th strings are roots. So, maybe [low to high] E C# A F# E C# A F#? He says 5th on the top though. Maybe F# A C# E F# A C# E? I'm too much of a rookie to figure this out. thanks

Trying to apply this to e9 pedal steel, i guess i could play the a pedal and slant it, but not sure which strings or notes are being sharpened. Its like an A6 sliding into some sort of dominant a? Like an A9 or 7 or something?
@roberthuston331
@roberthuston331 6 лет назад
woejinslow I'm not a steel guitarist, only the creator and executive producer of Western Swing RULES. I can say Western Swing steel guys typically tune C6 or in Eddie's case, A6. E6 tuning is most commonly a nashville country tuning, not used in Western Swing which is more Jazz based. There are more Western Swing RULES featuring the great Eddie Rivers. I hope you'll check them out and they are helpful. - R.H.

Those that have played Lap Steel for awhile, wouldn't have any trouble understanding what you are saying, along with your quick hand movements while playing. For a person starting off, not knowing a thing, it's very confusing. Confusing enough, that it just can't be followed by a beginner. It's a shame, because Eddie has a lot to offer, brand new players, wanting to learn lap-steel. My eyes are poor, and I have a very hard time, trying to follow Eddies hand movements, but I am trying, and calling out letters, and numbers loses me completely. I did get some of what he said, but lost quite a bit as well, even after re-watching the video.

Hi Wayne, Your comments ring true for a lot of people but if they keep at it, they usually have an epiphanous moment when they'll get it. If you don't know the numbers system, I highly urge you to take a moment and familiarize yourself with it. It will change your playing in more ways than one.- R.H.

@@roberthuston331 Where can I get info on the numbers system to use on a 6 string lap steel (no pedals)?
@waynedavies3185
@waynedavies3185 3 года назад
Thinking over what you wrote over night ( as well as the many videos regarding lap steel learning), I think learning Lap Steel would be far easier (specially to understand), is applying piano keyboard lessons, and sheet music. A piano is used in many cases in western music, almost the same as the use of lap steel, and pedal steel. Not only are either one used for fill in licks, and also for playing original melody, of each song played, but also the harmony back-ground, along side other instruments.
@roberthuston331
@roberthuston331 3 года назад
@@waynedavies3185 I would totally agree about learning the piano to enhance your musical knowledge to apply to your steel. You could use sheet music but that requires learning to read (speed bump). I give piano lessons and teach the numbers system rather than learning to read. It's quicker and more useful. Just FYI.- R.H.

it is a real shame that lap steel he has is straight bridge=out of tune everywhere. it needs a compensated bridge to play in tune.
