Westinghouse iGen2500 One Year Review
Sharon, one of the Two Tired Teachers, did a one year review of our Westinghouse iGen2500. In April, we ran both generators in parallel when we were in Phoenix.
On the way home from the California trip, Sharon tried to get the generator started. A day or two later, it occurred to her that we were over 8000 ft. in elevation. The 2200 worked, but the 2500 wouldn't run.
There is a work around, but it is not an easy fix. It requires a kit for higher elevations and then removing everything you did when you return to a lower altitude. Since the two run in parallel fine, and the 2200 seems to work better at higher elevations, Sharon is not getting the kit, nor is she getting a different generator.

My two Honda 2000 inverter generators run ok at 9600' elevation in Colorado. I've never had to re-jet the carburetors. They definitely have less power at higher elevations, I have to run both of them when using the microwave. Great update and I enjoyed meeting you both at Lake Mineral Wells a few weeks ago.

We thoroughly enjoyed meeting you. We were glad to have the smaller generator to use at higher elevations.

Interesting, wife and I just spent 10 days at Big Lake, AZ 9000-9400' and had zero problems with our iGen2500. Rained 5 days straight, so it got lot's of use since solar was out of the question. I still wish I'd have bought a Honda, only for the quietness of their unit. Just wasn't in the budget. Always feel guilty using it if others are camped nearby.

I don't know what the problem was, but we were glad we'd taken the 2200 as well as the 2500.

I could be wrong but I think density altitude is the concern specifically. In other words if it’s cold 🥶 and you’re at high altitude the generator doesn’t know it. If it’s hot 🥵 and you’re at s high altitude it really makes a huge difference. I’d have to look but I believe the definition of density altitude is altitude corrected for nonstandard temperature.

It's weird that some work & some don't . I live at 8K feet in SW CO and have a 2000 watt Wen. We often camp at well above 8K but it works fine with no modification (knocks on wood). Keep the great videos coming.

I wonder if the generators that don't have as much power do better in high elevations because our igen2200 worked fine whereas the 2500 would not stay on.

It is common in all carburetored engines to have issues at high altitude the degree varies

Thanks for the info. Since we live in central Texas, we know basically nothing about high altitudes.

Nice to watch your video and hear about your generator experience. All vehicles these days have fuel injection with a computer to automatically compensate for elevation, air density and ambient temperature. Nearly all small engines do not because that technology adds too much bulk weight complexity and cost. Any engine which is equipped with low tech carburetion needs to have a high altitude kit installed aka rejetted otherwise it won't operate correctly at high elevation. One may be able to get it to run without the mod but operating with the wrong fuel air mixture will eventually cause engine damage. For the RV-er who camps at high elevation it might be best to carry an extra 50 lb inverter generator with the high altitude kit installed. I have 80 hours on my igen2500. It is both very easy and real important to use the screw provided on the carburetor float bowl to drain it when not being used >60 days. It's in the manual. Also drain the tank.

We would invest in the 50 pound inverter generator, but we are 2 women in our sixties, and lifting 50 pounds is enough to cause either or both of us to hurt ourselves.

Doesn't the igen2500 which you have weigh 46 lbs? Champion has some lighter weight inverter generators. My point is that you can carry a modded one just for use at elevation. @@TwoTiredTeachers

Always run them with 93 octane gas, and in a 2 gallon gas can add from a shot glass, 2 shots of seafoam and 2 shots of WD-40, it removes water from the gas, and seafoam keeps the carburator from gumming up, it also keeps the carbon from building up inside the exhaust system, Over 900 hour use, never use lower rated gas or high mileage oil..
@TwoTiredTeachers
@TwoTiredTeachers Год назад
We do that with the exception of WD-40. Thanks for the tip.
