Yeah you really need another automatic switch. This one to start the generator and another one to connect the house power.

@@HomesteadEngineering The only issue with doing it that way would be that you'd need to make sure the utility cable that signals the power outage isn't going to receive any power from the generator itself otherwise it wouldn't be able to differentiate power from the grid (restored) vs power from the generator itself. So the generator would kick on, return power to the utility cable, the ST switch would assume power was restored and kill the generator again. The process would continuously repeat itself until the utility cable is unplugged. I was considering using this as a solution but I don't see any way around it.

Maybe a dumb question - if there's utility power, but the control wire and L14-30 are not plugged in, will any devices plugged into the outlets still work? Reasoning being in situation 3 i'd probably have the power coming through the MTS from the generator, and would unplug those two things.

brarrr, I think I would have to see it and chat with you for a while to really understand what your trying to accomplish. What you describe may work. I would definitely not do the whole house Generac. I might also look at a solar generator with panels like the EcoFlow Delta Pro. I would also have a video surveillance system hooked to the internet with one of the cameras focused on the EchoFlow screen so you know the exact state of the system at all times (same for the generator is you go that way). If the video goes down, you know the power is out.

@@HomesteadEngineering Well, we're just about as north as you can be for continental US (7mi to BC border), in trees... solar isn't too likely. I think my two biggest pain points in my plan now are a) running more than 25' from the ST Switch (the extender cord isn't available so I'd have to make my own) b) powering the fridge and others and running cables without leaving a window/door open and c) deciding how to route propane lines...

I posed a question to Westinghouse Tech Support and they took over a month to reply, and when they did, they didn't answer my question. Twice I asked and twice they responded like they never read the email. I know we're in COVID times but seriously, if you are going to respond, read the question and at least try to answer it. Makes me wonder if this is how their tech support will be when you have a real issue.

Yes, that would work great for a battery backed solar power system. EcoFlow sells a system like that on a smaller scale.

Hello PCL, I would not run a generator in a garage even if it is well ventilated. I would run it outside and away from the house. The carbon monoxide is odorless and can cause officiation while you sleep. I have even heard of the exhaust getting into the attic from being too close to the eves of the house. Then it settles down into the house. I would also highly recommend installing carbon monoxide sensors BEFORE you use a generator. Thanks! @@HomesteadEngineering CO2 is complicated and deadly if miscalculated. CO2 is heavier than air BUT it also has a density to temperature ratio. So the hot exhaust gas will allow the CO2 to rise, possibly into the attic of a house, but then as it cools it settles out of the hot air and seeks a lower level, by then colorless and odorless. So many people run generators in drafty garages that are at lower elevation than their house, but all it takes is a wind shift and the always safe practice to turn deadly. We can tolerate CO2 many times higher than normal but it is quick death when over those, submariners operate in subs that are 5 times plus normal.

Yah, that seams a bit odd to me as well. You would think they would have a least had two 20 Amp plugs, one for each leg. My guess is that there is some electrical code that makes that a code violation. I think you could still use the 50 amp circuit to manually switch your house over once the ST switch kicked the generator on. Thanks!

@@metak71 Rob, One way I might use this would be to plug the switch into the 30 amp outlet and use it as described in this video. At the same time you could plug a manual transfer switch into the 50 amp outlet. The manual transfer switch would power your entire panel although the generator may not be capable of powering everything at the same time. So the power goes out, the switch starts the generator and the fridge and other stuff on the switch are automatically backed up. Upon noticing the power is out you could then just manually switch the manual transfer switch over and power your panel. I am not sure this would work as I have not tried it yet. You should check with an electrician before making any final decisions. Thanks!

Hello Frank, I have 740 Amp hours at 48Vdc. That's about 36kWh. So if I stick to a 20% DOD, I get about 7kWh usable. In an emergency, I could pull 18kWh. Thanks!

Hello Benny, you are correct. If your going to leave it on all the time then you would need to use the included trickle charger to keep the battery charged. I think your going to love that 7500DF. I have never exceeded 7200 continuous Watts so far. Thanks!

Not sure of your exact setup but it sounds like it would work as long as the utility input into this switch is not running off the output of your main ATS.

Marc, I am pretty sure you can disconnect the 30A power cable and then plug the generators 30 amp outlet into your manual transfer switch bypassing the ST-box. That would allow for the auto start AND the full split phase 240V 30A circuit to be utilized. (note: I have done it) There may be side effects that I am unaware of so proceed with caution. This is not how this switch is intended to be used. Thanks!

Good observation. I immediately thought of how I could do just that. However, most transfer switches are manually operated. I have a Westinghouse 7500DF that also has remote start. I have a 50 amp outlet on my house connected to a Generac 50 amp manual transfer switch mounted inside the house. With the Easy Start, it would automatically start with the loss of grid power and provide power to it's 20 amp outlet. after that, I can simply switch the transfer panel over to generator power. This Easy Start switch will provide one more layer of power continuity for critical items like a fridge and maybe a small space heater (where all of your freezable water pipes are) when you are away from home. At home, you simply do the transfer of power on your transfer switch yourself which then powers all of the circuits that are connected to it. If your generator only has the one 30 amp outlet, you would be limited. With a larger generator, you can plug in both the 30 amp and the 50 amp power cords.

Hello Rick, Most generators in this class are loud and yes it will wake up the neighbors if they are 30 feet away. You might try sharing the power with them so everyone gets along. I think you can use the switch to auto start the generator (when power is lost) and then use the output of the generator how ever you choose. I tested it and it works but you have to make your own decisions about how you use your generator and switch. Thanks!

@@GiffysChannel I think your looking at a whole house 20k Generac type setup for what you want to do. I personally do not like or recommend that type of setup for a number of reasons. Primarily, they burn and waste way too much fuel so your down time is very limited and they are cost prohibitive. In my opinion, battery backed solar power with a manually switched generator backup is the way to go but it too is very expensive. I think this is the only ST switch that they make for all their models. You may be able to pair this with a 2nd manual transfer switch running off the 30 or 50 Amp plugs.

Hello Paul, that would seam to make more sense but also think of it this way: This box is just for a few critical loads like your fridge and sump pump. Imagine the storm hits in the night and these things are kept running until you get up. At that point you could plug into the other circuits and get more out of your generator.

Most places have electrical codes preventing automatic transfer of power. I think this is Westinghouse getting around this problem. See my post and Dave's test for me on how I am going to use this. I am in one of the code restricted areas.

Anytime your running loads greater than 30 amps. I personally will probably never use the 50 amp circuit.

Its a transfer switch. So it only feeds the outlet on the box itself. The power to the outlet on the box will be either powered by the utility or the generator. It will not back-feed the line. Now, if you were to hook the 30A or 50A output directly into your panel without using a transfer switch, then you could have a BIG problem.

Ok, yes I see now that it’s feeding individual appliances and not the bus bars on the breaker panel. From a safety standpoint that makes sense, but what practical purpose is served, then? Doesn’t manually changing an appliance from utility to standby defeat the whole purpose of the ATS?

Michael, I think I get where your going with this... maybe. The ST switch is plugged into the 30 amp outlet of the generator so that is taken. Now, in addition to the ST switch, you plug into the 50 amp output with your own 50 amp cord. Now you run that into a electrician installed, manual transfer switch to your house. Now when the power goes out, the ST switch starts the geny and you just need to manually switch the 50 amp transfer switch to your main panel. NOTE: just an idea, I have not tried this. Thanks!

@@HomesteadEngineering I have a 7500 gas only so there is one 30amp outlet and 4 120v outlets. But you have the idea. With only the data cable and a household line in will it start the generator? And allow power independent of the switch? I have the 30 amp to a manual transfer box. This is the only way you can hook this to the house by code in most places, other than running none permanent extension cords. The other question might be if the switch keeps the battery charged?

@@HomesteadEngineering Thanks much. What you proved to me is the recharge power is coming through the hot house line and is not connected via the outlets on the box. Which makes sense otherwise they would have added a cut off switch for the generator recharge of the battery when it starts, costly. Generators like Generac do this. This is a much cheaper, more flexible and I think reliable solution. The only problem is weather proofing the box. Using a Westinghouse generator with the ST to a manual transfer box with a power loss alarm in the house is a perfect solution for code areas that do not allow automatic gen to house transfers

The battery would die eventually but I think it would take a while. I'll have to do a test to see how long. Thanks!

@@HomesteadEngineering It seems someone should ahve something that works with 240 at 30/50A (my gen is 30A) w/o having ot cost more the the generator or those units that only go to some cricuits. My 5500 watt used to run the whole house (minus AC) and my new 12,500 watt can in fact run it all as long as I keep it under 30A. Something auto that isn't a $10K whole house would be nice!

This is clearly aimed at entry level people who need something completely "plug and play". Anyone with the knowledge to set up a critical load panel and contactor is not the target customer.

Taylor, I think you make a lagit point but also think of it this way: This box is just for a few critical loads like your fridge and sump pump. Hello cmh31909, I do not have the pinout for this. I am not so sure that it would be trivial even if I did. There may be some hand shake protocols and other commands involved that you would also need to replicate. For example, I think there may be an electric fuel pump that has to be activated. Thanks!

@@HomesteadEngineering there's a reddit thread where someone sorted out the pin info. there are 2 at 12v, ground, and 5v signal that triggers when it connects to ground. Pretty simple - however lots of work to get to something else triggering auto-start.

One way I might use this would be to plug the switch into the 30 amp outlet and use it as described in this video. At the same time you could plug a manual transfer switch into the 50 amp outlet. The manual transfer switch would power your entire panel although the generator may not be capable of powering everything at the same time. So the power goes out, the switch starts the generator and the fridge and other stuff on the switch are automatically backed up. Upon noticing the power is out you could then just manually switch the manual transfer switch over and power your panel. I am not sure this would work as I have not tried it yet. You should check with an electrician before making any final decisions.

@@HomesteadEngineering I think this has the downside of the 50a connection (likely) powering up the branch circuit that is connected to the switch, at which point it will notice that the power is back on and tell the generator to turn off... which will cause it to lose power and tell the generator to turn on, which will power the ... and so on and so on. I can't figure a way to get your cake and eat it too, with a separate panel somewhere that is 100% only the mains.

@@brarrr Yes, but you can solve that by just unplugging the smart switch just before you turn on the manual switch. So for example: You hook up the smart switch as described above, then you go to sleep. Sometime in the night, the power goes out and your generator automatically starts and keeps the fridge and other critical stuff on till the morning when you wake up. At that point you unplug the utility cord from the smart switch and turn on the 50 amp manual switch for full power to your electrical panel.

Westinghouse referred me to a company that manages the warranty and they referred me two repairers but they do not know the St Switch and repairs only small engines

Not a bad idea. Note: you can use this in conjunction with the 30A or 50A output to a manual switch. That said, building an automatic switch that runs off the 50A circuit would be better. Let me know how that goes. Thanks!

NotMe, you can run any number of devices up to 20A off the ST Switch. You can also run off the 30A or the 50A circuit via a manual transfer switch at the same time. There are a lot of ways to use this depending on your situation.

Joel, I just ran a freezer test and I found that stuff starts to melt around 7-8 hours in. Still partially frozen after 24hrs but would probably need to be taken out and cooked up at that point. in a heated home, fridge/freezer will not last 48 hours. no chance. typically more like 8 hrs, up to 12.

That could happen. Need to take precautions depending on where you are.

I am pretty sure that this transfer switch actually charges the battery when left on RUN.

@@metak71 No. I was trying to ask if the generator could communicate with a whole-house service disconnect automatic transfer switch. That would make it a standby generator if it could do that, which I would really like.

I am pretty sure (I did test it) that you can also run the 30A or 50A circuits but they would have to be manually transferred. It would be nice to auto transfer the larger circuits automatically.

Sean, Hooking up this switch to run the auto transfer 20A circuit does not preclude the use of the rest of the generator, its just an added feature. People have all kinds of situations where this may be beneficial.
