Please Note: I do not recommend running sensitive electronics like computers directly off this generator or any generator with a THD greater than 5%. For those sensitive items, I would use this generator to charge an appropriate battery backed "solar generator" and then use that to run the sensitive electronics.

Question. When you had the generator hooked with the 50amp plug to your solar batteries you were getting 90amps Did I understand that? I think the Gauge wire in the plug going to the 50 amp plug tops off at 60amp right? I think what I am getting to I did not understand how that solar system works and what you were showing
@HomesteadEngineering
@HomesteadEngineering 3 года назад
OK, the Amps you see on the solar power are relative to the battery voltage seen just to the left. So 90 Amps at about 55 Volts = about 5000 Watts. That's well within the 50 Amp or even the 30 Amp circuit. BTW: I was using the 30 Amp circuit on the generator (7200 Watts). Also note that this does not take into account the charging losses so what's coming off the generator is probably about 20% higher. Thanks!

@Quincy Anons I don't know for sure and without looking into it all I can do is guess that the smaller engine will be more fuel efficient given the same load.
@alrui

@@HomesteadEngineering Any reason you didn't use the 50 amp outlet on the generator? I noticed on mine the leads coming out of the actual generator to the generators panel don't seem very large gauge, certainly not the 6 AWG I ran from the transfer switch socket to the main breaker in my panel.
@HomesteadEngineering
@HomesteadEngineering 2 года назад
@@alrui I never use more than 30 Amps (7,200 Watts) so I don't use the 50 Amp plug. I use 6 AWG from the plug to the tx switch as well but you probably don't have to for this generator. It has a 50 Amp plug but its not a full 50 Amps, its only 9,500 Watts continuous not 12,000. Also the wire is not very long. I suppose I could do a test where I put 9,000 Watts on it and see if the wire gets warm or hot... Thanks!
@alrui
@alrui 2 года назад
@@HomesteadEngineering Thanks for the reply, makes sense. The reason I was thinking on going with the 50 amp set-up is because the breaker they have in the panel with the interrupt set-up is already a double 60 breaker so I figured I'd complete the install with it being 50 amp capable just in case someone down the road went with a bigger unit. Whats your thought on that? Maybe I'm going the wrong direction?

I purchased this exact generator over the summer here in Texas. I spent a few extra dollars to have a transfer switch installed and loaded up with a few cans of fuel (just in case). The storms hit and my neighborhood was without electric for days. We were warm and safe. We had friends staying with us to keep them safe through the storm. My only regret was not having my pool pump on the switch and it froze and cracked. We were blessed to have this generator. Yep its a little loud but who really cares in an emergency situation. I stand by this generator as it got us through 3 days of a deep freeze.

Great review. I LOVE my WGEN9500 Duel Fuel & ST Switch that I have set up as a Auto Backup Generator. With my ST, I have it wired to the UPS that powers my Entertainment/Communications Control Center, living room heater, and a few LED lghts. This gives the living room seemingly uninterrupted power. Also I ran 1 line from each 120V, 20 amp outlet "2 total" to the house for "EMERGENCY POWER ONLY " outlets that only work when the generator is running. For a short-term power outage, this is great. If it is longer-term or we need more power, we go downstairs and hit the manual 50 amp whole house power transfer switch. I love the flexible of it. All for about $1,300.00.

@HomesteadEngineering 3 года назад
James, I don't really like the big whole house generators for several reasons: 1. They are expensive 2. They are expensive to run 3. You can't really store enough fuel to keep them going for any length of time So I think they are really only good for very short term power outages. I think if I had no solar, no batteries, nothing at all and I could only have one generator, I would take a little 2k inverter generator. That and 200 gallons of gas would keep the essentials going for a pretty good long time. Thanks!

Yes, I think its a good idea to go easy on it during the break in period and in addition I don't like to run my equipment past 80% even after it is broken in. In this case, I ran it for the 1st hour with only 0-2,000 Watts. After that, I ran it to about 6,000 or maybe even 7,000 Watts for the review video but not for too long (maybe 15 minutes). That's 63% of rated continuous load.

I have owned this generator since October 2020. It replaced a 5500W Generac Wheelhouse gen with a 10HP B&S Engine. I like this generator a lot. One annoying non-feature feature is the remote start key fob. It can only be used once the run/stop rocker switch on the generator is in the run position. If left on the run position, over time the starter battery will discharge. To actually use the remote start, you have to go to the generator first to use the rocker switch. How is this a real remote start? It isn't. I did a warranty busting modification. I hard wired a second rocker switch wired in parallel to the switch on the gen. Routed the 4 wires into the house and mounted it on the living room wall. Hung the key fob next to it. Now it is remote start!

I realized I never corrected myself. Two rocker switches in this case DIDN'T work. I could only use ONE switch. The issue is that unless both switches are in the same position, the spark circuit will be grounded through the switch in the STOP position. I removed the rocker from the control panel. I have a short 4-wire harness starting from where the rocker was,and running to four female push-on connectors. That are held tie wrapped to the generator frame. Now I can either connect them to s small switch box that could travel with the generator, or plug them into my house harness so I can use the rocker switch inside along with the remote start key fob. It works.

I have to tell you, I’m majorly impressed! I just bought this exact unit yesterday after the storm that I had to battle through for a week with no power in that damn cold! But I’ve looked for weeks trying for figure out what was the best set up and ruled out quickly the direct plug in, didn’t like the transfer switch option because of the limitations and additional wiring of each fuse you wanted active and don’t have solar yet but will have it this summer although I don’t have a battery back up system like you’re. What was most impressive and appreciated was the wattage that you showed on each appliance, namely the large ones and then being able to run the entire house which is why I chose this unit. However, my question now is, if you had all those items running with some of them at 2k watts, some with 3500 and some with 5000 watts and all the lights and incidentals along the way, how can the 9500 watt generator still continue to handle all that wattage if it’s over the 9500 watt limit? BTW, I chose to wire my generate directly to the breaker box inserting an additional 50 amp fuse so I could randomly run what I wanted whenever needed. But if you can help answer that question would be great! Thanks again for the best video I’ve seen on this scenario of usage and set up!! Great job!!!!

Hello Lawrence, Thank you for the nice comments. 1st, you need to make sure that you lock out the utility power when your generator is on. If you back-feed the line, you could injure a linesman. You should make sure that this can't happen even by mistake. 2nd, you cannot run more than 9500 Watts and I would actually not run my system over 7,200 Watts just to keep a safe margin. You have to rotate through the heavy loads as I was trying to show in the video. 3rd, you did not mention but I wanted to add, I would not run any sensitive electronics on this generator as it has a high THD. i.e. no computers. Thanks!

Thanks! Yes I did see that sensitive materials comment in another comment you mentioned and sorry I forgot state that yes I installed an interlock device to prevent that risk of the back feed. Bought this exact generator and love it. Bought a Reliance Controls 50 Amp 10 circuit transfer switch and it only allows a double pull 30 Amp, not enough to run my central AC. The wire is 10 gauge not 6 but was told that was UA approved by Reliance because it was short in length. Reliance also said the 50 amp transfer switch is a combined 50 amp and will not allow me to add a 40 amp breaker nor will the wiring allow this. How on earth do I run my central ac and what transfer switch allows a 40 amp breaker with supportive wiring? I do not want to chance running the central ac with what is offered nor do I want to rewire it like some do.
@HomesteadEngineering
@HomesteadEngineering 3 года назад
Mike, I agree that you should not run anything bigger than 30A off that double pull transfer switch. I have two of those same 50A boxes as you may have seen in this video. I get around running the big AC's by running three window units that all run off separate 20A switches. I am also adding a 18,000BTU mini-split that I plan to run off one of my transfer switches. I DO NOT run any of my main heat pump AC's off the transfer switch. To run your main AC off a generator I think you would need to run the generator power directly into your main panel via one of those "interlock" kits. Its basically a metal slider that only allows your generator OR your utility to be active at any given time. Then you would shut off every breaker in your panel and only turn on what your generator can handle at any given time. That said, I am not an electrician and you should check with one before bad things happen... Good luck!
@newportmike8519
@newportmike8519 3 года назад
Thank you so kindly for the fast reply. Yes, figured I would have to go the interlock route. After seeing your rig I really got caught up in how nice the transfer switches could be and really wanted to make them work. It keeps everything so nice and separate but if it can't handle the bigger breaker for my central ac then I guess I'm forced to use the interlock and main panel even though lots of people do it any way and rewire them I will not. Dang there goes my dream of making my panel area in the garage loaded with gear like a control panel at Disney World. Now I'll have no meter to tell me when the ac start load has settled either. All I get is a $40 piece of galvanized metal to act a s a dummy switch so i don't back load. I wonder why nobody makes a transfer switch with 6 gauge and a double pull 40. Everybody wants that.

@@newportmike8519 One big advantage of the Reliance switch is that I can actually run my solar and utility at the same time. Thank you for an excellent review. The setup that you have helped me with both its clarity and inspiration. I am expecting my 9500DF in a short time. I am starting out simple with just the 30A cable to a Reliance thru-wall to 6-gang kit, so that I don't have to keep a door or window ajar. Then I'll just run 12/3 extensions to my major appliances. I am also getting the EZ Generator transfer switch (simple GEN-OFF-UTIL rocker switch) for my boiler. Did you purchase the ST Switch you listed the above in the links ? My problem with using the ST Switch is running the cords through a door or window. I did not notice any conditioning or suppression. The 9500DF's THD spec. made me think I should at least put an isolation transformer , such as the Tripp Lite IS500, to somewhat protect my PCs, UPSs, TVs, etc. But I saw that you had a digital front-end dryer that you ran directly off the generator. Have you seen any issues with your electronics from waveform distortions ? Did you ever put a scope on it ? Eventually, I want to add the Reliance whole-house MTS to feed my 200A service panel. Your review is making me re-think my plans. You estimate your solar/battery system saves ~87% of runtime? WOW! But of coarse that's running 2 hrs at high-load versus 24 hrs at varying/idle loads during a long outage. Fuel consumption during idle to low-loads would be difficult to accept, if I end up unnecessarily spending hundreds of dollars more on fuel. This makes your setup very appealing. Although a solar system would be a large investment for me, I did see an inverter for sale that could use solar and/or generator to store to a battery bank. I wondered what storage size would make sense, if I excluded solar, and just banked the generator. I average only 450KWH per month, or 15K/day. I'll have to find out how big a storage bank (in $$$) I would need. I imagine that I could also run my high-loads (washer, dryer, etc) during the re-charge cycle. Even in the worst of NE winter, my overnight usage is pretty low. So that would be great if I could just run a couple hours a day. That would also relieve me of dirty power, because I'd be running off an inverter then. Thanks in advance for any reply.

Hello WillingCoyote, You make some very informed comments and have obviously done your homework. I personally only use the generator to charge my battery bank, I only showed the other methods as examples of ways you could do it. If I were running my house directly from the generator then I would put sensitive electronics on a line conditioner to protect them as you mentioned. Yes, battery backed solar is expensive up front but keep in mind that it runs every day and not just during power outages. My system cost me $18k after tax credit and will pay for itself eventually (approx. 5 more years).

Do you have to manually switch from 120 to 240? Or do the plugins automatically know? I have a RV and am a bit nervous to plug my 50 amp plug into it. I bought this same one and the instructions do not mention this.

Hello Barry, the short answer is that you probably don't have to worry about this at all. The 50Amp-240Volt plug has 4 wires. L1, L2, common and ground. The voltage between L1 and common is 120V and the voltage between L2 and common is 120V. The voltage between L1 and L2 is 240. Your electrical panel in your RV should be wired as needed depending on the circuit. Your plugs should be 120 and your oven may be 240. Ya follow? :) Note: I only say probably because I don't know exactly what you have or trying to do.

Just bought this Genny.... I am having a hard time finding out what cord t buy for the 50 amp receptacle. I see the male is bladed, and have seen female bladed ( 50A 14-50P, 50A 14-50R). You plugged a bladed into the 50Amp outlet, but I did not see the other end of the cable. Do you run it into a 50 amp bladed or twist lock? Needing to get a cord for 50 amp inlet box for my house.

03:31 shows the breaker buttons for the outlets. Why does the 50amp far right outlet have a 30A instead of a 50A?

Good question and I don't know the answer. I suspect that the two 30A breakers are for each leg of the 30A plug and the 50A plug is broken by the main breaker. That's just a guess, I really don't know. Let us know if you come across the real answer. Thanks!

Thanks, wow! I’m having an interlock switch installed. Did you re-wire e GFCI connections on the generator, page 18?

Hello John, I have not looked into that so I can't really say. My thought is to only have ground faults enabled in one place but I would read up on it and then consult an electrician. Thanks!

@@HomesteadEngineering thanks, your video you recommended was excellent too. I have the same 9500 Westinghouse you have. I bought it as most cost effective at this time. We have been fortunate for 24 years not losing power for days, but I have always wanted to be prepared and this is my start thanks.

@@johnlicatov6734 Its nice to have the assurance of a backup so you know you can get power if a situation arises. The next step is to safely store fuel and rotate it. I always stock up on fuel at the start of hurricane season here in Florida. When the season passes I will dump it in my truck and burn it up. The last piece is to add a battery backed solar generator like the EcoFlow delta Pro. That way you can run everything in your house for a few hours off the generator while at the same time charging the EcoFlow. Then save gas while running off the EcoFlow for 5-6 hours while the generator rest. Thanks!

When you are running the high loads, I assume it is off of the 50 amp plug. I just purchased this same generator.

Thank you for this video! I am about ready to pull the trigger on this one, one question about the "dirty power" and sensitive electronics though. Would having those devices on a surge protector make any difference as far as keeping them safe? Thanks on advance and I may opt for the using this to power a solar generator for those devices as you have suggested depending on your feedback. P.S. I should add that I do have the outside connection to hook up the home to the generator so I would not be plugging in directly to generator with any electronics.
@HomesteadEngineering
@HomesteadEngineering 2 года назад
Json, I don't think the typical surge protector is going to help you and having the outside wall hookup is also NOT going to help you. The dirty power will pass through to your electronics. Also, you have to be sure that your solar generator itself can except the dirty power or your could damage that. I think my solar power system is OK with the dirty power so that works for me. Another way to clean it up would be to add a line conditioner but I think they are pricy. Thanks!
