Thanks for this review. I am looking to replace my current 5500w with this Westinghouse for this exact reason. Nice to see it passed the stress test. Thanks a lot! Keep up the good work.
I just wanted to say I've been struggling with troubleshooting this generator during hurricane ida issues in new Orleans. Thank you for.making this video!! It.helped.me.fix.a.few.issues!
This is why I bought the WH 9500. I live in Hurricane country and need AC and refrigeration/lights sometimes for a week. The 9500 appears to be able to handle the load with a manual shut-off switch. Thanks, you convinced me.
Thank you Thank you Thank you Just spent 5 days without power here in Spring TX because of a 80mph storm. I'm getting this for my 3 ton unit at my house.
Keep this in mind. Anyone getting a duel fuel (gas & propane) generator should be aware of this. If your starting battery should go dead (for whatever reason) you will NOT be able to start it with the rope pull, while it’s in gas mode. The generator has to be connected and set on the propane setting to rope pull (hand start). This is according to Westinghouse themselves. Reason being, the gas valve is held open with a solenoid valve, powered by the 12v battery.
Love this generator. We have the propane version dual fuel. They do make a 50A plug and an angled box with female end. That’s what we have done and are happy with it
Been researching since hurricane left us without power for a full day here in NC. I've been leaning toward the DF9500, but your video convinced me. Now if it will power the AC and a 220 well pimp, I'll be a happy camper. Worst case I'll run one at a time
You won’t ave a problem with your well pump. I have a 2 hp 240v pump that I have been running with my 7000 Westinghouse I converted to run on propane. in addition to 2 large refrigerators, 1 large freezer, wine cooler, ice maker, etc. not even a hiccup. I just bought the 9500 cause I thought the 7000 was shot (it was putting out 320v. After the 9500 was delivered I figured I would try to fox the 7000 and it was as simple as a 80 dollar avr. Oh well. Now I have two. May try to run my central ac but it’s really not needed. If I do they sell soft start kits to decrease the inrush starting amps needed.
We recently purhased the 10500 model with 13000 peak amps for my brother in law in Houston. He's had a real problem with power outages and the tri fuel generator is just what he needed in that hot, humid city. It powers the whole house with no problem but he shuts off his electric water heater and electric stove while using it becuase they draw too much power. It runs the A/C and everything else with no trouble at all.
We got the same one about two weeks ago. There was one dimple on one side of the box and when I opened the thing the frame - right near where the battery sits - was broken cleanly in half. My wife insisted we order the thing from Amazon (I'm not a fan) but when I called them they gave us an immediate refund and told us we could do whatever with the thing. I paid a guy 200 bucks to weld the frame - he drove about 20 miles each way to pick it up and deliver the thing. Only asked for 100 bucks but he did a great job and I don't see any other damage - very nice young guy and I didn't feel like 100 bucks was right. Gonna fire it up tomorrow and see if it runs okay - I think it will. If it does, we got the cheapest Wgen 9500 ever sold. One motor mount was very slightly out of alignment and this guy fixed that, perfectly. Got my fingers crossed. If there's a problem, we're 200 bucks in the hole....lol. Life is a gamble. If it works I'm gonna make a RU-vid video - if it doesn't I'm goin' underground.
@@BigCountrysWay DUDE - I fired it up and EVERYTHING WORKS....even the remote! I'm gonna make a video...lol. I filmed the whole debacle. All the digital stuff works.....I really thought it would - but, hey, I'm not the luckiest guy on the planet so I wasn't holdin' my breath that it was all good.
Great video almost have the same setup. 2 things you should consider. Install a tri-fuel kit and then Tap in on your gas meter for endless fuel. Hard to find gas when power is out. Also you should not let the genny get wet when raining.
Putting synthetic oil in is not recommended for breaking in period. After 50 hrs. Maybe. Just going by my service guys experience fixing new generators. I have a 9500DF and it powers my hole house two fridges, chest freezer and central air. I just run the big stuff selectivity. Great generator so far.
Westinghouse even states that you should not use synthetic oil during the breakin period because it will not allow the metal parts to seat properly. Synthetic oil is just too slick!
Love mine. Only used it once but it did its job. I also have a transfer switch. All sockets are live. I must have bought it in between seasons. March 2023. On sale at Amazon for $577. Free shipping. Now I see it has gone up $779. Weighs 200 lbs.
We have used the ru-vid.comUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!
I just ordered this generator, and I am getting the 50amp interlock switch and plug installed next week. We spent 3 days in Texas with no power during the ice storm. Never again!
Bought the same one on March 2019 for construction and it never let me down. I bought a Generac 8000 a month earlier also for construction and prefer the Westinghouse over the Generac. It has more features for the same basic cost including a fob start with the package. The Westinghouse is much better balanced than the Generac regarding pulling around. The Generac has much more weight on the handle than the Westinghouse 9500 making it considerably awkward. The only flaw I have experienced with the Westinghouse is the automatic choke. It is programmed to choke for a moment then back off, probably to avoid flooding and it works well at most temperatures. When starting on a Michigan subfreezing day I have to manually keep the choke closed to help it start. Not much to complain about. The gas tank is large enough to keep it running all night and well into the morning avoiding middle of the night fill ups. The current model is dual fuel and also runs on natural gas.
Had 2 harbor freights 7250/9000 not last a yr each, one rung out the engine, other has a powerhead problem, gut tells me I may getting one, about same price but a 3yr warranty and more options.
I have the same generator runs great. Had a circuit run from my patio to the inside panel with breaker and interlock so I could cut off the outside feed. During a hurricane it powered the house no problem including a well system. Only issue i had was my AC compressor would not kick on. That's when i realized my compressor is wired to the outside box and does not pass through the inside panel. Already have a hard-start kit installed. After seeing how well the generator handled your AC i am going to see about have the compressor wired up the panel. I verified i have the available space in the panel. Also i added the US Carburetion motor snorkel for natural gas. Took about 1/2 hour to install. Have a BBQ pit feed on the back patio so I added a quick connect and never run out of fuel. Last storm I ran for 4 days. I can easily run on gasoline if i ever have the need.
Nice man! It knocked it out of the park. If the time comes, I’d only run the AC when needed and probably only with a few other breakers like lights etc.. I don’t wanna stress it to hard
Good thing you saved some money acquiring that scratch and dent reject. You're going need it when you have to replace your HVAC control board due to the dirty power that POS genset pukes out.
Unfortunately this model does have a thd much greater than 5%; somewhere in the low 20s range. However the wgen12000 model with a peak of 15000 starting watts comes with a thd
I have a Westinghouse 7500/9500 and a 3 ton A/C unit and it was able to run it. I do have a hard start kit on it though. Never tried running it without the hard start though.
I bought this same unit for the same reason, except mine is duel fuel. I have a 4-ton unit on my house. Haven’t tried it yet, but will soon. I’ll add a soft start if needed, but either way this genset should work. I also purchased 2- 100lb propane tanks with an auto-changeover valve, adapters, quick connects, etc. Should run house for around 3 days without refueling. Anyhow, thanks for the video.
Hey guy, over here in southeast louisiana, we didn't get the terrible storms y'all got last year, but we've had our share. I have the exact same gennerator and want to hook it up to power my house as well. I THINK the big AC at my house is 3 ton and the small one is 2 ton so in addition to powering my fridge and freezer, the AC is a priority. If you get the time, can you make a video and show how you got this all wired with the interlock and plug at your house? I would appreciate it. I would go with a male connector at my house due to safety concerns so I don't have to have a male to male extension cord, but other than that, what you have done is exactly what I'm planning to do. All info you can provide on your setup would be extremely helpful.
I'm in southwestern Louisiana (Lafayette Parish) and wondering the same thing. I got an electrician coming Wednesday to give me an estimate. I want him to put a plug in outside and an interlock like Big country got. Over the phone, he's recommending a transfer switch instead. Probably because it's more expensive. I plan on getting the same generator big country got. That think a beast!
Just got one. Power my 18k BTU ac and shitload of stuff in the house and it's far from having issues. I have two heat pump tho but I only use the 18k one in this case anyway. Both are still on the generator box same for my water tank lol Now that I installed all that, I suspect I won't lose electricity haha. I've lost electricity like 5 times before installing it this summer lol
I also linked a few more breakers on it tho on the secondary panel. So depending of the season, I might just turn off a few individually to save load on it. Still never had the chance to use it lol but with the fuel price ATM, I'm not in an hurry to use it haha.
This generator caught my attention because Amazon has it on sale for like $850 which is a sweet price. But the 23% THD is what kills the deal for me. That kind of THD is horrible for sensitive equipment like high end TVs, computers, etc...... :(
Yes a lot of people ignore this important detail. I have a Westinghouse WPro series have THD < 5%. Mine runs at 8500 watts with 11500 peak and has a 50 amp plug.
@@otuagoma That most generators produce electricity that is not clean and/or consistent as what you get from your utility company. These power spikes from the generator are called THD short for Total Harmonic Distortion. These THD spikes can damage or even fry sensitive electronic equipment like computers or TVs. You want to make sure your generator has a THD rating of less than 5%. Shop generators which is what's most common have THD of 10% to upwards of 20% to avoid problems specially if you plan to plug it to power your whole house with a transfer switch.
I was looking at getting a built in because we on average need it for 3 or 4 days every 5 year. now that you have had it for a while what do you think about it now?
not sure if my question makes sense, do you have gas component inside or everything electric? my electrician mentioned that i cannot run the AC because when electric + heat pump run, it will pull 60 Amps.
Hey bro, do you know you could make it Automatic during power loss.. all you have to get is the Automatic Transfer switch, which cab power up to 20amps.. then you could wire up a knife switch inside your property to manual change over to power the remaining heavy items in your house. This is helpful because you could turn on and off automatically and when you not at home you do not have to worry that your family is not taken care of.. also you could build a muffler system with a box to quiet down the noise. God bless.
Yes sir, I’m aware but i just wanted it to be easy. I have a shop as well and a few key parts are 50amp so with my set up I can still work in the shop if need be. I love feedback! Thanks for the comment!
He totally ignores all the subtleties about having a generator sitting around for months or years with gas in it waiting for the power out moment to happen. Transfer switch limits your options as well as to what circuits to power. Oh yeh and where is that generator while it’s waiting to automatically turn on? Outside in the elements with that fuel gumming up the carburetor. No thanks. I’ll just gas mine up and have it up and running in 15 minutes when I need it
@condor5635 Being it is dual fuel, you can have it connected to propane and not have to worry about gas going bad or gumming up on you. You can setup an automatic transfer switch to power the entire house or select breakers to control just part of the load.
Hey great video. I have one too. Have you ever measured the RPMs at idle? Also can you confirm that an empty gas tank will take a full 6.6 gallons of gas? The reason I ask is because mine idles at 3750 RPM and it will just accept a little over 5 gallons. Hope to hear back.
BIG COUNTRY, First, thank you for the video. I purchased a Westinghouse WGen9500C but it shuts off the breaker when I turn on a 4 Ton A/C. Would the extra ton do this? Do you think a soft start kit would resolve the problem. Florida Hurricanes are coming soon and would like to have A/C. The generator runs independent of the A/C for two refrigerators, microwave, TV outlet with no problem. Thanks. Debra
I definitely think a soft start will get you squared away! If you’re using a dual fuel model and using propane, try running it on gasoline for your AC.
I have electric water heater that thing kicks on with the AC pulling about 60 amps for I guess I could shut it off. I live in Phoenix we don't get power outages much but in the summer no way can go more than a few hours temps in the house will go over 90 in no time. The only thing I would worry about is sagging the voltage when the AC unit kicks on could cause damage to the compressor if it sags too much. I have a new AC unit don't want to damage it I called the installer he said if I put a soft start on it voids the goodmen warranty.
If you don’t put a soft start kit on it and full send it with the generator, if you have any issues they don’t have to know you were hooked up to the generator 🤷🏻♂️ then the goodmen warranty will cover 🫡
@@BigCountrysWay They said if I open the unit up and install a soft start, I'm voiding the warranty. I guess I could remove it before the contractor comes to look it if it fails. They understand what a softstart is, but they said Goodman doesn't approve using it voids the warranty. I understand that unless their engineers were to approve its use, they can deny warranty.
I see you just posted this in March. Have you run it a fair amount yet? This is what I am looking at for my house, though I want the 12kw, and was wondering about longevity.
I got the same gen unit 2 years ago. I love it. I try to start it monthly. Will run my heat pump AC without any hard-soft start modifications. It will not run my heat pump in heat mode but from what I have read that heating mode uses 5x the power vs. AC mode. We have space heaters and a big buddy propane heater to heat with in emergencies. How’s the wgen 9500/12500 holding up for you?
Don’t understand how heat mode takes more electricity… your just flipping valves and reversing the refrigeration cycle. Compressor runs same whether heating or cooling. 5x? Where did you hear that
@@condor5635 yes I saw it on a contractors web site. Maybe the heat strips? I might very well be wrong and I think someone at micro air told me the same thing. I will try and test it this winter when we start running the heat again. Thanks for the feedback.
I did install an easy start soft starter about 2 months ago and now getting 16-18 amp starts with the AC where previously the LRA says 75 amps inrush but I never tested it prior without the soft start. Thats going to be a welcomed bonus if I can run my heat easily too.
@@FDRGREG - I don’t think there’s any heat stripes. What was the condenser becomes the evaporator and what was the evaporator becomes the condenser. The compressor runs in heat mode or AC mode and other than flipping some valves to switch modes I’m not aware of any electricity needs that drastically change what is required to run the unit in either heat or air conditioning.
Generally speaking, you only bond the neutral on the first panel coming into the house. Everything after should float if it’s tied to the houses electrical system.
Your 50 amp cord you made, is it four prong/male by four prong/male? The reason I ask is because you could spend a fortune on the cords alone when just one would do. Great video by the way. I bought the WGen9500DFc, it works great as well. CO detector, with dual fuel. sorry your purchase came with damage.
I have central a/c and heat. I have a 3 ton unit. We loose power in the winter all the time. I’m wondering if it will run the central heat and main appliances like 2 refrigerators, freezer, and lights (all LED).
I had mine hooked up with a transfer switch today. I’m in the Midwest so still running heat. My house is 3500 sq ft and I have an apartment above my garage. It ran everything. I didn’t try oven or dryer and wouldn’t in an outage either. I’d use microwave and toaster oven or grill. It DID run everything else on gas. I didn’t try propane power yet.
The manual specifically states not to use full synthetic oil during the break-in period because it causes problems with internal seals or something like that... Have you seen any problems? I prefer synthetic myself but don't want to damage the system.
Have you tried to run AC & Dryer at the same time. I have this unit, and it ran my 4 ton AC unit and my whole house . I didn't try it with the dryer yet
Neutral is bonded to frame on this model. I believe you have to change it to floating neutral, which is detailed in the owner’s manual and can also be found on line.
Just got this yesterday and the shipping box as well looked like it's been kicked down some stairs but got it since I hired a electrician to add a interlock switch and he recommended something with 12,000 watts to power my house in N. California since we get alot of black outs during our 100+ degrees heat and fires. Quick question doh what fuel do you recommend for long term storage?
Best fuel for long term storage is propane. Stores for years without any problems. If you don't have the dual fuel model, I believe there are conversion kits available.
You have a great generator but, I do not see any protection from foul weather for it. Most people I see with a generator, provide a outdoor shed and leave it in place to run. A shed could be of plastic or wood or metal whatever you so desire.
Hey Big Country, are you still using your Generator to power your 3 ton A/C. I watched your video and called my Electrician. He said there is no Generator on the market short of Whole House, that will run your A/C. He said you’re gonna burn your Generator up or mess up the A/C. I purchased a Tri Fuel 9500 Westinghouse based on your video and he warned me not to do what you did. Curious
Just an Air Fryer? Well I never ran it a super long time but I’m pretty sure it could power a hour for 12 ish hours… so just an air fryer without a huge load on the the generator id say 13-14 hours? Not 100% sure.
@@BigCountrysWay THD is total harmonic distortion. In simple terms it’s the quality of the power supplied. Said a different way, perfect power is a sine wave; but distorted power is a different shape wave. And the value of the THD is how far away from ideal it produces. What does this mean as it relates to devices being powered? If the power has a high THD, meaning low quality power then the devices are being subjected to more heat, higher peak current, higher electromagnetic emissions (noise on a radio). Many of these impacts may not be noticed by an end user without using tools to measure the impact. For example you might not notice that your power supply is overheating if it’s still running and working ok.
Bruno, what makes you think that an interlock would affect THD? The only thing the interlock does is prevent the main breaker and the generator inlet breaker from being on at the same time. Meaning the interlock is NOT connected to the power flow itself directly. It’s an external device.
Interlock just prevents the main circuit breaker from being closed while generator power is being supplied, does not affect thd. According to the owner manual for this the thd is up to 23% so it's far from clean energy. TVs would be a no no, unless you don't mind shortening their lifespan.
@@BigCountrysWay Are we discussing the same thing? I’m referring to on the generator, the 50 amp outlet with a 30 amp circuit breaker on the generators panel under (sort of) the outlet.
I want to see if it does more than just powers an AC unit if it powers AC will it power the heater, because so many people needed a back up generator when the power grid went down in Texas during a snowstorm easy go to the lake and cool down. I wanted to know if it’s gonna power more than just heat I wanna see if it’ll power a freezer a small home basically I wonder if it’s got that power. I might need a bigger generator. It’s only two bedroom two bath so it should do something. I wanted to see if it could be more
Considering this is one of the largest generators out there that you can role around, it’ll power just about anything. An AC compressor consumes more power on start up than a heater. I know this unit would have powered my lights, tv, AC/Heat, fridge all at the same time. It barely flinched when the AC kicked on and that is the most energy drawing appliance on the house.
I would look into wether the heat or gas. It will power a gas furnace because all your using is the blower motor. On the other hand, if your heater is electric you need to. Heck the label on the air handler and so the mathmatical load calculation
It’s hard to see from the video, but did you say you made a male to male cable? That means the inlet on the wall near the interlock is female? If so, that is very dangerous and could kill someone in the future. Please do the right thing and replace your inlet with a male inlet. You already have the interlock to prevent the male inlet from being energized. I have the same model generator except in the dual fuel version (9500df). It’s a nice generator. I have not yet tried to run my 3 ton ac on it. But after seeing your video I may try.
@@BigCountrysWay I’m assuming this is a serious question and you are not joking. So I will explain a few examples to illustrate the risks. Please understand these are just examples and are not a complete list of possibilities. Meaning there are other ways people could be injured besides these. 1) you are ill, in the hospital and your family is at home on a 98 degree day when the power goes out. They are desperate for some cool comfort so they hook up the generator themselves even though it’s something that you’ve always done for them in the past. Everything goes fine at first, but after the power comes back on and they are shutting down the generator they do it in the wrong order and pull the cable from the wall while it’s still running and touch the male end by accident and shock themselves. In summary, most people assume that on an extension cord or any power cord that the male end is not energized when not connected. But the female end can be live if the other end is plugged in. Therefore people will instinctively pick up and touch a male end thinking it’s always safe. This SHOULD always be true. But with a cord with male on both ends the power is running backwards from what intuition would expect. This leads to a risk of death. The risk is higher to other people than to yourself since you understand the danger. Please don’t put other people’s lives in danger. If they were ever hurt you would feel responsible and that would suck for both people involved.
@@neilbrookins8428 I understand your view point, I do. And I was being serious. I love feedback so thank you for this. I do have to say, I think that is stretching it alittle bit in my situation. First, The cord I made is 6ft long so the generator is right next to it. This being said, “if” someone else is unhooking it, they will definitely know there is still power going to the other end of the cord. Second, my wife would never attempt a hook up or unhook without having me on the phone. She would even be to scared to flip breakers in the house so she would most definitely leave the house on generator power until I got home or until the unit ran out of gas. If someone were to be stealing it, and left it running , while moving it so that we didn’t hear it was being tampered with, the male plug may even work in our favor lol With all this being said, you did bring that risk to my attention and for that I thank you! I now know to not let anyone mess with it without clear instruction or monitoring
@@BigCountrysWay you think that having instructions will help reduce the chances of an accident and you are absolutely right. But there is still the very real possibility of an accident because someone didn’t read the instructions or they forgot a step or they were drunk/high/stoned etc. Please stop trying to think of a specific person or specific scenario that might happen and accept the fact that there could exist a scenario which you didn’t plan for and didn’t expect and thought would never happen- but it does happen and leads to touching the end of a wire. Let’s look at this a different way- How is it BETTER to keep things they way they currently are? How does this current setup provide any benefit or advantage over changing it to use a male inlet and a cord with female end? What are the pros and cons?
@@neilbrookins8428 my man. I get your opinion… my house, my generator, no one will touch it besides me. There is a possibility one of my tires blowing out going down the road causing me to hit a tree.. does that mean I change the tire brand I have and get new tires to prevent it? No. Because there is always that risk even with new tires. You take a risk to drive anywhere you go.. but this is an acceptable risk.. I accept it… even when I have passengers or someone is driving my truck, I accept it. For this particular case, I accept the risk of the plug.. there are so many people with generators out there that have this exact set up. That’s where I got the idea from, researching how I was going to hook it up. I never said I would have written instructions anywhere, we don’t drink nor get high at my house, any instructions would be over FaceTime or phone call. Cons? Cost… I don’t want to put anymore money into it. The set up I have works great and I have accepted the risk.. it works great, I’m the only one that will touch it, no reason to change it.
Got a question. I got the same one and I'm going to wire it up for the 50 amp. My question is it's a 120/240 volt. Does it automatically just switch between the volts. Like how can it run let's say a electric dryer that's on 240 but at the same time run your fridge that's 110 without burning the fridge up? Please answer
Well if you wire it to your house with a 220, that 220 will go through your breaker box if it’s wired like i did. Power will be distributed to both 110 and 220 appliances just as if the power was on.
@@BigCountrysWay k so pretty much it'll send 240 to the breaker box. But whatever breaker you turn on that's only a 110 that's all that particular breaker will send out to the appliances, lights, etc.
@@cavyboy99 I literally just back feed my panel with the 220 plug. No issues. If you do it that way make sure to start with all your breakers off and turn in what you need
I have the same generator. My only issue with this generator takes 4-6 cranks before it starts up on gasoline with auto choke. Does anyone have starting problem like this?
So, I would just hold the choke with my fingers if it had problems starting. I think the auto choke needs to be set to last a little longer but if you hold with your fingers it’ll fire right up.
