They didn’t “sell” them. Things got so bad in the Westward boardroom battles that the IBA decided to end Westward’s franchise early and give it to TSW, but to use the Westward name for the rest of the franchise.

This is the actual broadcast. The last moments were simply footage of the champagne accompanied by a slightly abbreviated TSW jingle.

I only know about Southern’s final broadcast, and a lot of ITV’s other regional franchises altogether, from Bob The Fish’s ITV in The Face series. As a kid, I didn’t know ITV was a network of region-specific channels, I only remember Meridian being the franchise holder for the South East (where I live), I knew of Anglia, Central and Yorkshire Television, but I thought those were just production companies! I also mostly knew Carlton from their home video business. Looking back on what Bob The Fish said about And It’s Goodbye From Us… Had I been around to see it, and old enough to understand what was going on, I would’ve most likely watched part of it to laugh at them and nearer midnight turned over to the BBC to see what they did for New Year on that occasion!

Southern TV didn’t do that, they would air last show with all of their staffs and close with star logo disappear in night sky

@@T540L3R Still not true, Southern Television's final programme didn't finish until 12.43 am on 1st January 1982.

@@oceandarby ATV and Southern both overran. ATV did a bit of reminiscing with Mike Prince and Shaw Taylor before shutting down in their normal way with Central doing a preview startup a few hours later. Southern infamously did their end of the world party with the Southern Star fading to the distance before TVS started up a few hours later.

12 August 1981 was when TSW unofficially went on the air

Westward shouldn't have been such grumps then. Honestly I'm surprised they and the Southern board didn't go off to Beachy Head and do themselves in.
