This is a great beginner project for wet felting, and you will learn how to wet felt a fun, textural and one of a kind scarf. We have a kit for this here: feltingsupplies.livingfelt.com...
This video is sped up in several places. We also have a real time version that is just over 2 hours, it was recorded during a live felt-a-long and may be more helpful for 1st timers. The camera angles are slightly different and we answer participant questions while we work. It is currently available here: www. livingfelt under videos.

Loved this very helpful video. Great to learn different and more helpful approaches. I want to add that it's hard to mess up projects like this! Especially if one is willing to think outside the box. One scarf ended up looking much better as a table runner so now I have a beautiful table runner. Thanks for your video.

If the students understand the actual felting process then all the activities of rubbing and soaping makes sense. I mean that info about how the fibres are altered by wetting and agitation. The nature of protein fibres to heat, wettness, and agitation is the most important info, then all the techniques of rolling, rubbing, hot water, etc. actually activate that process.

We do not cover "what is felt" or the science of felt making in every video because a lot of our friends felt with us every week on our live show, and also this video is about "how to felt a ____ (thing)" vs. being an introduction/first video about the felt making process. With the number of videos we make...covering that information in every video that would get a bit redundant. So jump in where ever you are in your experience of felt making, and most of all, we hope you HAVE FUN learning and exploring the wonders of felting.

if not buying your kit is there a way to make sure the wool im buying will be in a length long enough for the base? and is there a way to make our own blends in such a long length at home, all the blending tutorials i see are for smaller quantities of wool, or does such a quantity need different equipment than most hobbiests would have

I put it in a zippered mesh laundry bag or pillow case then include it in with laundry, both washing machine and dryer.

Thank you so much for these helpful tutorials! I'm a beginner and I've noticed that my wet felting projects come out "fuzzy/hairy". Is this because of the type of wool roving or maybe due to the high pressure I'm putting on the fibers? I have been wet felting small projects with a spray bottle, olive soap, small bubble wrap and a bamboo mat. I tend to roll roughly/hard overall. Any suggestions are highly appreciated and thanks again!

Well made felt is incredbly strong, but durability will vary based on fiber used. Even rugs can be felted from wool. Consider Yurts made by nomadic peoples, winter coats, hats and valenki made for Russian winters. A large blanket is a very large undertaking, the feltmaker must know their materials, including the shrinkage rate. There are a few ways you could go about it...we suggest starting with small samples = pot holders, placemats and table runners. It will help you consider the materials, tools, time and space required for such a large undertaking. It will help you learn how to felt and allow you to evauluate the durability of your felt. A blanket must be well felted or it will pill and wear badly. You must also consider Care...how will you wash it? It can only be soaked/ rinsed and spun out...not put in wash or dry cycles unless you are prepared for further shrinkage..and sometimes poor results if the felt shrinks unevenly.

You can spin out in your washer, or just roll it up and squeeze out the water :)

What does the bubble wrap help with? I see the bubbles are touching the felt, why?

How do you know how much wool and yarns to use?

Hi Karen, for this project, we use approximately 1.5oz of the base fiber. You can make one and then weigh it...then decide to make it wider, longer, shorter etc. and adjust amount of fiber accordingly. With yarns and embellishments, we have no measure, just play with it and have fun!

why didn't you cross or shingle the layer of roving?

This is a special layout method for this particular project = a cobweb effect, to create the thin, holey layout, and to take advantage of the long color stripes in the wool. If we shingled, we would lose that distinction.
