I raise Navajo Churro. They felt well, but can be coarse sometimes. I have a few sheep who are soft or I use lambs wool.

Thanks for the tips on making the opening of the hat. It works so much better than cutting!

What a fabulous tutorial Rosemary, many thanks for sharing. I am hoping to make a beret for a friend who is going through chemotherapy at the moment.

Prayers go to her. Churros wool can be itchy...try Merino if it's going to be close to skin. ❤

Thank you for sharing…! I especially like the idea of not cutting the wool but building the opening….

I do teach at a few primitive gatherings right now. I will be at Between the Rivers in Washington at the end of May. 😊 I also teach at Elkhorn Gathering and Rabbit sticks.

Do you work with unwashed wool? :)
@rose883

I do not wash my wool. I do use wool that is free from debris. My wool felts so well, that washing it causes it to begin felting. The felting process cleans the wool. You can see from my other videos how to choose and prepare wool.

I have wool from a farm down the road but so much guard hair. Is this usable? Love your work !
@rose883

Guard hairs are a problem. They can be used if mixed with good felting wool and can be used for to help stiffen brims of hats.

Would the brim technique also work for felting slippers - as I don't want to cut into those either?

I use this technique for slippers, rugs, bags, vests, hats, etc. I rarely if ever cut my wool.

Ohh so very neat!! Thank you for sharing! What kind of sheep did the fiber come from? Iv been thinking of getting some finnsheep and i think they would make amazingly soft hats and other felted items

I felt with Navajo Churro sheep wool. I am unfamiliar with Finns, but you can check the viability for felting by doing a test patch in your hand. I have videos for choosing wool that show how to do this.

@@rose883 ooohh wonderful!! Hmm I wonder if Icelandic is similar in texture. They have a double coat like the churro. I recently purchased an Icelandic buck and I crossed him with my rambouillet ewes. I'm super excited to see how different the fiber is or if it's a good mix of both.

Icelandic sheep are great felting sheep. Rambouillet sheep are terrible felting sheep. So, good luck on that cross. Look for my video on what you need to start felting to see how to do a test patch for felting. Usually lamb's wool does not felt as well as the second shearing. Good luck. 🙂@@Amanda-yf7vj

@@rose883 awesome! I'll look into it!! I haven't had any problem felting with the rambouillet so far
