This is the BEST explanation for needing a decent drag on a reel. Every other video I have seen on fly fishing says a reel is just a line holder. Thank you for a perfect video.

Great job succinctly explaining and demonstrating the most useful techniques in wet fly fishing.I believe you meant to say it is not as tactical as European nymphing and dry fly fishing rather than tactile. In my opinion it is one of the most tactile forms of fly fishing and I can even use sense of touch to fish after dark. Thanks for an excellent video.

Great tips in here, for both wet flies, showing your fly to as many fish as possible, and line management!

Never thought about the soft loop thing. I definitely keep some line to have and to hold until d.. wait what lol. Getting my passions mixed up again. I do swing directly from the reel sometimes too.

Nice explanation but one other element would be nice and that is how is the strike, what to look for and setting the hook?

It’s a contact game. Best advice I could tell people wet fly fishing is to use their opposite arm during the hold. Setting as done in 95% of slack line fishing will more than likely rip the fly out of its mouth or break the line, especially when 5x or smaller.

What’s the difference between fishing nymphs and fishing wet flys? Thanks for your help awesome video
@danatucker5193
@danatucker5193 Год назад
Nymphs are generally fished upstream. Wet flies generally across and down and swung through the current and the strike is usually after the line straightens and the fly comes to the surface.

Managing line is one of the things I've really gotta work on. Also do you limit your wet fly fishing to certain times of the year?
@robertheal261
@robertheal261 3 года назад
Not really. I will fish them just about any time of year, both during hatch activity or as a "search' method during low activity. Also, when a blanket hatch occurs and there are almost too many bugs, a swung fly can often set your presentation apart from the chaos on the surface.

When is the best time to use wet flies?? Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter?
@newflyfisher
@newflyfisher 3 года назад
Spring or summer are probably the best, but we have also seen them used in fall with great success as well. Anytime there is either a hatch or when food is drifting in the water

How slack should the line on the water be? Not at all or a little bit?
@robertheal261
@robertheal261 3 года назад
Great question. You want to remain in contact with the fly but not to the point that it's riding up too high or swinging too fast. It is definitely a "feel the hit" thing. Best advise that I give when I'm teaching this is; after the mend and your fly is in the zone and as soon as you feel the line wanting to move the rod tip, begin moving the rod down stream at the same rate of speed as the current. The line should have some "Hang" but not so much as to lose contact with the fly. (I hope that made sense.)

Dude says literally nothing about how to "swing". He just presumes the viewer know what this means. Nothing about casting directly across the stream, and coming tight to your fly, and letting the current take your line. Nothing about if you want the fly to sink more, casting it upstream, putting a mend in the line right away, then coming tight and letting the water drag the line
