One of the most asked questions I see on forums across the web is: Should I put my delay and reverb BEFORE or AFTER my amps?
So I put together this simple video to illustrate the tonal differences between the two options. Enjoy!

Thanks man! I really enjoyed the video!

Thanks for the video. I used my HX Stomp and played around with where to put my wet FX during a recent pedalboard build and I found that my personal favorite was a third option...between the amp and the cab (similar to having it in the FX loop of an amp...I think). I have all wet in the FX loop of the HX Stomp and have the amp model before the FX loop and the cab after or in my OX Stomp after leaving the HXs. In your sound samples I definitely liked the FX before the amp. Thanks again!

Let me be clear…they both have their place. For ME, I’ve been playing with with wet effects after the amps but the sound I am after (and have been unable to) is with the wet effects BEFORE the amp. I like my reverbs and delays after the amp. What really helps adjustment to either choice is having a blend knob or separate wet and dry level knobs on your pedals/units. But that's typically only a premium pedal option.

One of the reasons I stopped using a full blown pedalboard is because I prefer running modulation, overdrive etc pre amp and delay and reverb post amp. Normally delay and reverb are on separate parallel paths with the dry signal for clarity. One way I can do this with Tonex or other pedal amp is by using a midi controller and a pedal drawer in a 19 inch rack with a line mixer. Alternatively Full sized Helix or Axe Fx gets the job done whether you use the internal amps or Tonex, as the modeller can act as a mixer. The downside of this approach is the lack of on the fly control though . 4 cable method with a pedal switcher that can mix in parallel sort of gets there but not as good and there is more to go wrong due to extra cables. As you say there is no right or wrong answer it’s just what works for you and the music you are playing.

Great video. The issue hear is that you are not running edge of breakup. You are running at breakup. In my opinion you would get a better tone if you dialed your amps back and ran you r wet effects before and used a drive pedal to get your breakup
@thetoneshepherd
@thetoneshepherd 29 дней назад
Hey Joel, I’m running things exactly as you describe. My clean tone is pretty clean. Any drive you hear is from one of my overdrive pedals.
@DeloreanDave
@DeloreanDave Месяц назад
People forget a KEY factor here is whether or not you use amp distortion. Some people use amps as a clean platform and putting wet fx before amp but after overdrives works. However, a lot of players use tube amp distortion and not OD pedals. So when using a gain channel on amp it will usually sound way better with wet fx in loop i.e after your amp distortion :)
@The_fuzz_buzz
@The_fuzz_buzz Месяц назад
I’ve recently been running my amps way hotter, and actually prefer the wets into them even more. I love the breakup on the wets, so that’s a big factor too. I used to not like that sound, but it’s because I was running them into modelers that didn’t take it well. On real amps, and when I switched to ToneX’s, it was so much more musical, even with running the amps hotter.
@thetoneshepherd
@thetoneshepherd Месяц назад
Agreed, I missed this point in my video. When using high gain amps I imagine it's usually preferred to use wet effects after. I don't use much amp gain at all so it slipped my mind.
@DeloreanDave
@DeloreanDave Месяц назад
@@thetoneshepherd Yeah all good man! Just thought it was worth mentioning from someone who relied on amp distortion for 20 years and who has recently experimented with the whole clean platform idea :) Deffo something people should take in to account if using high gain stuff!
@jacobpittman1996
@jacobpittman1996 Месяц назад
I got in the habit of using the effects loop for wet effects, because I played through channel switching amps. I actually used both channels, getting the preamp tube saturation for my drive sound (plus a drive pedal for another level on either channel). I am experimenting with various setups these days. Good discussion here.
@fishmank27

It all depends on the style of music really. For worship wet fx before an edge of breakup amp is just THE sound. Now a part in a song or a certain song may dictate I run them post amp, I.e. Lincoln Brewster type stuff. Awesome room, looks great

I might be missing the mark but isn't your board set up for wet effects into amps primarily so it is going to sound a lot different when switching the order not set up for wet effecrs after amps. I run wet effects after amps and i have completely changed the way i have set up those effects like increased mix, repeats just different settings even different settings on amps and ODs compared to if i was running wet effects before amps. Your wet effects sounded glorious before your amps but that is the way you have it set up. It could sound very different if you set up your effects to run after amps primarily. 😊

I used the wet fx always after tube amp distortion. But since i have the UAFX Lion "on the edge of breakup tone“ in the Loop in the HX Stomp. I noticed that my delay sound very ugly to me. Ahhh interesting! I feel like every amp is different
@mSarimaa
@mSarimaa Месяц назад
@Kunnel87 if your delay is from the stomp, check the control labeled Headroom on the delay block. Might be that when the delay was after the amp the amp boosted the signal so much the delay itself started distorting. Up it to max (+12dB) and the sound should be much cleaner. Then of course check whether or not you like it before or after. 👍🏻

If I put amp before dly+reverb will I still get that broken up sound from my reverbs? Cause as of now I only have one Tonex One and I do want stereo reverbs and delays, so will I still be able to get that sort of sound? Edit: Lets say I turn up the mix on my reverbs, can it get that stormy sort of sound?
@thetoneshepherd
@thetoneshepherd 23 дня назад
It won't ever really be that "stormy" sound because there's nothing to distort the reverb and delay. That's what causes that sound. But it can still sound good! So don't be discouraged if you have to run your wet effects after your amp.

Hi everyone, so completely new to pedal boards as amps. Do you go into DI boxes at all at home or are you going out of the board vi XLR into and iterface ( also which interface lol) Then di you primarily play through monitors or how do you setup a home ‘studio’? Also on the recording side what program do you use for the stream side? Looking at recording at home on my side. Last Q for now, when playing at church whats the output from your board to the house? So stereo do you treat it as two instruments in the mixer pa side right? Sorry for all the techie stuff but i need to do a mobile setup also for church :)
@thetoneshepherd

At home/studio I use a DI box (actually a DISO+ line isolator from Pinstripe pedals...much better than a standard DI for guitar modelers). And then, yes, I go XLR out to my interface (Apollo x8p...but you don't need anything that fancy...a Scarlett 6i6 or similar would work). I use Logic Pro for recording. And when you send your signal to the house you send them two XLRs and they pan them hard L and R.
