I so agree with you on the aesthetically pleasing designs of the early 1900's. Today's products most of the time look very, very dull and the "sterile" designs just scream "No imagination put into this product!!!"
Given the number of blades in the package, I suspect the man who spent his hard-earned $ in 1935 tried it once like you did, threw it in the drawer and went back to his non-electric Gillette. Talk about buyer's remorse!
That’s a great point! Some old rich guy who likes gadgets and found this one lacking. It would be fascinating to know who he was. Maybe it was a Christmas gift?
Really got cojones to use that razor, I was shivering vicariously for ya. I also have to condone that 30s voice, it's too much fun to do for some reason. Further to your point about time travel, I get that feeling too (as I'm sure many others). I think it's a mixture of disdain for the oversaturated now and a rose-tinted curiosity about the past.
Awesome video! I never knew there was another NRA at some point in history. When I saw the three letters and a logo that looked like an eagle clutching something I thought that the gun-toting club gave its stamp of approval to this implement. Electricity does not kill people, people do!
National Recovery Act. Created a plethora of jobs. What a fascinating concept razor. You were thinking right when you wiped it off with a rag versus rinsing the head with water. One of your best videos ever!!!
Been awhile Mr Sinatra the non- Frank type LOL since I watched one of your videos but you're always entertaining and funny and I find myself coming back for more take care
That razor would never have made it to market today, and today we have GFCI outlets, which didn't exist back then. Wonder how many men were electrocuted, or seriously shocked, using one of these. The natural inclination would be to rinse the head under a running tap, or in a filled sink/bowl. One slip or careless splash, and you'd have 110v pulsing right through you. You kiss your wife, and tell her, 'honey, I'm going to go temp fate today and shave'.
That scent is the wonderful fragrance of electricity!! You know the early heated bathtubs were electric. Wonderful video👏👏👏 love your channel, it's very relaxing and silly, thank you
Wow!!! Your a braver man than I am.. I probably would have dropped it as soon as I plugged it in and ran fearing an explosion.. way to take one for the team..
@@SinatraLennon Ha! That's too funny. Grit was a small newspaper with feel good stories, current events, etc. I signed up for 20 papers per month and I'd walk around the neighborhood and sell them for 25 cents. You'd pay for the papers up front and the rest was yours to keep. My biggest prize was the Grit paper boy bag
Hi! One of your best and funniest shave videos ever! I‘m watching your videos for a long time now and especially love your Barbasol ones and your „anti-snobistic simple man mindset“. Looking forward to you next videos. Greetings from Germany, Dan.
Thanks, Dan! Yeah, I really am just a simple guy that likes to shave with these sorts of razors, etc. The great thing is, there are other RU-vid shavers that are much more knowledgeable and have way more stuff than I do in their shave den. So, there’s some good choices out there. Me? I’ll keep it simple. Thanks again for watching.
Dude, I’m a semi ashamed cart user (of the massive sellout kind), and and happy to say that find your videos to be totally appointment viewing, good sir! Exceptional job!
Bakelite invented in 1907. At the time is was so 'modern' that Daimler Benz used it on their Mercedes cars, not least as a base for the badge that went on top of the radiator grill.
Just for curiosity, do you use only alcohol and/or any other products to sterilize old straight rasors? I'm thinking to buy a used one (Gillette Slim), and I don't know if alcohol it's enough to do the job. Thanks in advance for your pro tip.
There's no need to worry about anyting most circuits nowadays in a bathroom use a GFCI I know this because I've wired in thousands of them secondly looking up the patent I noticed that the actual blade itself moves side to side which then it brushes across the comb portion kind of like a modern day hair clipper so I believe the water is necessary in order to keep it lubricated just my two cents it looks really neat though
I had a Gillette razor with a battery that worked the same way, I rather liked it, it did *seem* to do a good job, but I'm curious if it was any better. You gotta condition an old blade like that, strop at least, maybe even put it on a stone and it should last ages
261 Fifth Ave is currently being renovated so there isnt anyone in the building but yes, the building is still there, right next door to a starbucks lol
have you tried the cvs pharmacy goodline de safety razor yet it looks like the budget Viking blade razor it looks like a rebrand it is for a budget razer has a great build and it shaves well and comes with 5 German ss blades that shave nice great video
This was fascinating and hilarious at the same time! I seem to remember Gillette made a version of the Fusion with a little motor that made it vibrate like this? And I'd be curious to see someone rework the Tark concept to use batteries and a more standard type of blades such as GEM or Injector.
Bakelite was developed by Leo Baekeland, a Belgian-American chemist operating in Yonkers, New York, in 1907. Seems like a VERY early attempt at what Gillette is now doing with its multi-blade cartridge razors like the Mach 3 and Fusion.
I just saw his comment in another video. Very, very cool! I love that an actual relative of this fine inventor found my video. It’s really an impressive invention. Thanks for the comment!

Wow, all the drawbacks of a safety razor AND the trouble of proprietary blades AND the ever-present risk of electrocution... no wonder the company went out of business as soon as the US government stopped subsidizing them.
You should try the norelco vintage sportsman electric razor I think it’s called I could be wrong but it’s a battey powered wired travel razor that ones in a little leather case with a dual head, it’s super loud tho but could be a cool video and their only about 20 30 dollars on ebay
Since you like Barbasol shave cream, you really need to use the Pacific Rush shave cream! The menthol in there is amazing! Plus it has caffeine as well.
I hate to be an old stick in the mud, but I saw that the ac outlet wasn’t a GFCI. Is that outlet connected to a GFCI breaker instead? We want you to be around for a long time 😀
SinatraLennon I like it, nice presentation! Congrats on the 6k subs, when is the giveaway? I am still waiting on your response to my offer on the older gillette 😄
I just started watching a Transplanted German RU-vidr. He's in the US. His channel is Heiko Shaves. He likes vintage razors. He'd get a kick out of this.
It sounded a lot like a tatto gun. I guess the same type of electric motor would power one of those too. Btw if you get bored search here on RU-vid on “How to speak in an mid Atlantic dialect”. It teaches you how to imitate the movie and radio stars of the 30’s. 😃
The illegitimate child of a vibrator and a DE razor. You're braver than I am; I would be very leery to use a 90-year-old electrical device around water. After so many decades the insulation probably isn't in the best of shape and consumer safety wasn't exactly a priority in those days to begin with.
