they don't actually die from wet tail its the dehydration :'( mine died last night. tried giving her water n antibiotics but she spat it out

Food and water should be changed daily, spot cleans should be done daily as well but a clean out is only required once a week. You don't want to clean them out to often, this can cause stress, but you want to clean them out often enough otherwise bacteria grows in the cage which can cause wet tail. My hamster is lethargic (tired) and has diahorrea but still has an appetite and is drinking :-/ strange! Any ideas?

My hamster came into contact with something that my other hamster with wet tail had! She's eating fine and drinking water, but she doesnt run on her wheel and sleeps 20/24 hours a day!!! What should I do? I already contacted my vet!

Also another sign is.. if u look underneath where their wee hole is.. you should see some discharge.. it takes 7 days for symptoms to fully show

go to vet immediately and get a sulfa based antibiotic. Buy "oxbow critical care" and mix with pedialyte instead of water and add probiotic for small animals. You can syringe feed the mixture to your baby frequently. He will resiste the feeding, but be persistant. Mine have this as well and are improving greatly. Any vet can give you the stuff you need to treat.

sean Gilligan hey I know this was five years ago but I just thought I’d try to help for in the future! You can go to a veterinarian however they usually don’t prioritize hamsters and can only see them in like a week. Or a better option is to go to an urgent clinic but this is more expensive because they call a specialist out to help! The best option is definitely the urgent clinic as hamsters will usually die in 24-48 hours after symptoms show 😢🐹

good treatment.. "oxbow critical care" for nutrients mixed with pedialyte (for electrolyte and treatment of dehydration) and probiotic for small animals (to replenish the good bacteria in the gut). Tube syringe feed the hamster frequently with this mixture. I gave mine "sulfa" type antibiotic that was twice daily. They are very much improving, are now pouching food and the stool is thickening. I learned this after losing one because I didnt know. "Dri Tail" in pet stores is not adequate

I think he meant.. not to groom himself while he has the infection as it can get in his eyes n mouth and cause bigger problems

Our Hamster is just over 2 years old & over the last, 5 weeks or so has had Diarrhea & its quite bad, what we wish to know is this just old age or is it something like wet tail. We have a good relationship with him, we keep him well give him lots of things to do plus lots of love, he has a good selection of food plus we put vitamins in his food & water, but mainly in his water. We are now very worried about him as we love him very much & we are worried that we are missing something, please answer this post & give us some idea of what may be going on from the info I have given you. I have found two weeks ago a female hamster walking alone down the street (!)... Brought her home, but she is constantly with a wet tail. No diarrhea, no bad smell... It's is just as if she can't take care of her hygiene properly and on top of that she sits on her urine (I don't know that part, it's just my conjecture). She is the smaller hamster I have ever seen - even thought she could be barely more than a baby, but she isn't growing. She is about the size of my thumb. Also she is sleeping 90% of the day _and_ the night! Can that be the same problem you are talking about? There is no veterinarian that can take care of a hamster where I live ... It's just a small town in a third world country...

i have had my hamster for round a year months. She is not in contact with other hamsters but she appears to have wet tail her eyes are stuck together so i wipe them with water soaked cotton balls. she is smelly her butt is wet and i wash that area every day. i have seen her drink and i have seen her eat but very little.I have notice small amounts of diarrhea in her bedding. She sleeps alot. She did have a wet butt a few months b4 but that was gone in a couple of days. Is this wet tail

Hey I know this was five years ago but I can tell you Incase this happens in the future again! It doesn’t sound like it’s wet tail (if it is it is the early stages or your hamster was one of the few lucky survivors of wet tail) it sounds like it just had diarrhea or some stomach issues maybe from stress or diet change! Please!!!! How to get rid of the stench??? Just got 3 hamsters (2 girls & 1 boy) from a private seller that was moving to a place where they’re not allowed pets. The girls absolutely STINK (which gets on you if you pic them up) & seem wet underneath. Whilst the boy doesn’t smell at all & is dry underneath. The previous owner said the smell is just because they’re girls but it’s soo very bad that I have had to bath them. Also the girls poos are big but the boy’s is small. They’re all very active, especially at night. The boy will run & run in his wheel but the girls iseem to be crawling up their cages as if wanting to escape.

blk bbw hi! Do your hamsters have separate cages? Hamsters are supposed to live separate because they will kill each other and is your cage big enough? The recommended size is 490 square feet of floor space for one hamster. The reason behind it could either be wet tail due to stress of being with other hamsters (if you suspect that take them to the vets straight away or an urgent clinic because they can die in 24-48 hours from wet tail) or just diarrhea from diet change or a new environment. However no matter how much they smell you unfortunately can’t bath them because it will ruin their fur and skin and they could get skin diseases and also if you don’t dry them properly they could most likely go into shock and die! (I know it is annoying when they smell bad) 😂 hope this helped a bit! 🐹

I'm scared because my hamster has been eating a little less food lately. Not the whole bowl, just like thirds of it each day. And, we have a smaller bowl which is always filled to the ground, no height. This has been going on for two days. She also has been sleeping a lot lately, but I think it's because I've been taking her out of her cage a lot. Do you think she has wet tail?

Clean It 3 times a week wash the cage with soap make sure it is dried befoe they are in the cage

Valeria Padilla Although you want to make sure the cage is clean you may be over cleaning which will actually make the hamster much more stressed, try and stick to once a week
