How NOT to VAN LIFE in a STORM - a terrible place to park (then an epic one) Van Life Scotland.
This week, after all the delays and problems we have had so far on this Scottish road trip, we finally make it to the coast.. for about 5 minutes!
This is van life in pretty extreme bad weather and as the storm gets way worse than was forecast, we are forced to abandon our park up and head inland!
Once the storm clears though, we get back on the SWC300 route and continue to explore Scotlands south west coast, and my word do we find an epic park up! We wild camp at a lighthouse, with 360 degree views and, with it being a dark sky park we are treated to some great views of the stars in the night sky!

The white in the pebbles is because they consist of layers of rock, broken pieces of which are gradually smoothed by the action of sea rolling them around & against other hard surfaces until they become what we refer to as pebbles. I think..... 🤔😊

Spot on and it can also come from mineral deposits as the layers are getting formed. Also random "fun fact" the term pebble actually represents a specific size (its been a while so cant remember the actual measurements but im sure theres someone watching that can fill in the blanks! 👍😉
@olavsantiago
@olavsantiago Год назад
@@campervibe The white in the pebbles is formed by hot water flowing through the faults and cracks in the rock, and the white is deposited minerals - similar to the limescale in the mingin water you get down south that crusts up the kettle and boiler. This happens over a period of time, then the rocks get exposed, weathering and the sea wave action results in the pebble being formed with pretty white lines.

Lovely bit of coastline there. The white lines in the rocks are usually quartz. When its far underground, the cracks in the rocks have groundwater circulating thru them. The groundwaters contain dissolved silica and the quartz crystallises out from that. The rock then eventually erodes to the surface and is broken up into pebbles, you see the white lines. When the quartz is eroded, it eventually forms the sand on the beach (which is buried, turned into rock, gets dissolved by groundwater and the whole thing goes around again!)

Your comment about how tidy the houses are is appreciated by me - my late mum was a Scot and she was an awesome housewife (and worked full time). Clean house, home baking, home cooked meals and even managed to knit and sew. She didn’t think it was anything special either - it’s how a lot of the Scots are!

There are many different types of rock and many different ways they can end up with "white lines" on them. However, the most obvious and common case is joints filled with quartz (SiO2) or calcite (CaCO3). These can give you clean straight white lines running across the surface of an outcrop or around a pebble. How they form is essentially by the rock cracking as result of pressures within the crust. If the cracks are open then they wil be filled by fluids and crystals can precipitate from them. Typically the crystals are rather pure and clean (free of clay particles or organic matter) and so colourless and appear white (just as snow does).

It is a geological phenomenon, that piece of stone you have in your hand could have come from the last ice age where it was part of a huge rock formation on a mountainside before the movement of glaciers literally smashed it to pieces and dragged it along to the sea the white lines comes from sediment to which would have been part of the original contents of either valley rock bed or mountainside rock, the lines are from geological deposits possibly billions of years old but at the very least 200,000 years old, The white lines can show stress and / or an event throughout time where land pulled away from land along subduction zones, where layers of other materials bonded in layers throughout time, that’s in layman’s terms, I’m a novice geologist, but I love it ! By the way I hope you know just how much you ladies are appreciated by me , I spent my whole life wandering in nomadism , walking climbing camping and vaning- my last vehicular friend I had before I became very Ill was my blue Toyota CarAvan, being a single female it was ideal for a conversion, I had enough room for a small table a small double bed, and I kitted it out Moroccan style, will send you some pics one day on instagram, . I’m the lady that wrote you my story of one night in Los Tilos wood la Palma with the little people 😱 as a comment in your Vid of your scary night camp out in some haunted woods. I’m currently waiting for an operation on my spine and hips( go easy on them ladies) before I’m even allowed to drive again, so finding you and your wonderful life together is a total binge watch for me, as it connects me to who I really am again a -warrior traveller nomad- it really does help me to feel alive again watching you young ones doing what I did, alone, with a wolf and a swan ! The swan being my unseen friend. You two are such a delight. Have you thought about having a membership for your site, one that isn’t a must have to watch your content, but with a few extra little perks you could offer, like once a month membership only vids for example, could help you pay for those breakdowns, I deplore patreon but a you tube membership is so much less hassle, just a friendly thought . Awesome footage ladies and glad to see our scottish weather didn't dampen the spirits! It is interesting because of the white stripes. But if you look closely you will see two things: They were originally cracks in the rock, which have been filled with white material. (Sandstone, the crevices filled with white quartz). And you can also see that the quartz of the stripes was harder than the sandstone itself, so that the white strips are on top. The sandstone was less hard and was worn away earlier during transport by the river.

Loved this and the epic storm. Bryn's favourite thing is sheep as well, I think some of it is how they smell, maybe he just sees dinner on legs 😂. If I remember correctly from geology the white streaks are quartz. It happens when the rocks are heated and the quartz runs through fissures in the other rock, this all happens at great depth and under pressure. I hope I've explained it well enough, otherwise my geology lecturer would be most unhappy 😂. Stay safe love Sue and Bryn xx

@@paulfrankson3661 no the white lines in the pebbles Emily showed us are quartz. The rock has been metamorphosed and the quartz has flowed through the fissures. Any rocks that has undergone heating etc are very poor for fossils, you tend to find them in slates and shale beds where they have been compressed or as with footprints filled with mud and then compressed. It's been a long time since I studied! Hope I've explained well enough.

That was how I liked to do my roast potatoes. You have to be careful not to over-boil them, otherwise they may fall apart when you shake them about - I used olive oil and a little salt pre-mixed in to get an even covering. I found that with floury potatoes, 5 minutes in the boiling water was enough. It’s important to have the oven preheated to a high temperature- I think I used around 210-220 degrees centigrade in a fan assist oven, so you may need to experiment a little bit with boiling times (depending on the kind of potatoes you use-I used the largest ones I could find, suitable for baked potatoes also - also come out lovely and crispy if you cover them with the oil and salt mix. They take at least an hour to cook through and need to be covered in foil to prevent the outside from burning before the inside is cooked - I think taking the foil off 5-15 minutes before taking them out and maybe turning up the heat slightly allows the jackets to get really crispy. About 200 degrees for an hour, remove foil and 10 minutes after turning the temp up to 225 degrees. You can tell when they’re cooked through inside by taking them out of the oven and squeezing them slightly, if they feel pretty squashy, they’re usually cooked through and then with the extra 10-15 minutes at a higher temperature to crisp them, you can be pretty sure they’re cooked through. Try to get similar size potatoes, because smaller ones obviously cook through faster. Also I should say that I don’t use salt when I’m boiling vegetables, so there would be no need for extra salt when roasting. It’s nicer to add it to the oil that you toss the parboiled potatoes in IMO as it helps them get crispier. I do prefer smaller roast potatoes, but they’re probably less healthy than Emily’s as there is more surface area covered by oil and you’re consuming more oil or fat. Sometimes I’d put some of them in the same pan as the chicken - I’m primarily vegetarian and chicken is the only meat that I will eat and very rarely these days. Now my husband does the Sunday roast (occasionally when he’s in the mood to cook Yorkshire puddings (which I believe should be accompanied by roast beef, not chicken, but he just loves his Yorkshire puddings. He has experimented with that recipe and there were a few failures, until he realised that he had to preheat the pudding oven pan to a very high heat (I think he pre-oils, the little basins for the pudding mixture). Something went a bit wrong with his last batch as he had trouble with them sticking to the pan, maybe forgot to pre-oil the basins, but grease-proof paper is always an option for that. Thanks again for a fantabulous wet and windy video ladies 💖

Port Logan itself is worth a stop on a future visit even if the Fish Pond isn't open. There's a very pretty jetty and tower designed by the famous engineer Thomas Telford. There's a great beach which makes it a stunning location. So much so it was the setting for a BBC series called Two Thousand Acres of Sky. There's a good park up too. Park on the upper level which a local told me is common land. The no overnight parking signs only apply to the lower level which is council owned.

Fantastic episode :) You are both doing so well. We do our potatoes exactly the same way! Have been at home for two weeks and on day +50 since chemo and stem cell transplant! Total cumulative of about 4 months in hospitals this year. Trying to do some work on the T5, but keep getting NO from the missis in case I hurt myself and end up back in hospital. WAAAAAAAA :p

Hope all the treatments are going well and how you wanted them too 🤞 The potatoes are amazing cooked like that 😀

@@campervibe There have been times in the past, when I actually got involved, that I over boiled the potatoes before handed and then after shaking them about I had to kind of mould them back together😁😅

Typical West Scotland weather. My Daughter was doing work experience in Port William this summer, working on a pig farm - part of her studies to be a Vet. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip.

What a fun vid. It's awesome to see you tootling around my local area and I'm really, honestly surprised I didn't bump into you while you were here. You showed the area off really well and as an incomer to the area of a mere 16 years I can concur that the locals are indeed very friendly and welcoming.
