I went for a 7mm backzip wetsuit. I use it for underwater photography and snokeling in fresh water lakes. Quitte a struggle to get in since it's an older suit, But once tightly squeezed in it keeps me warm for hours in cold Dutch waters. When I'm going to the lake near my house I always put the wetsuit on at home. Love the reactions I get from surprised people when they see me going through town.

I do underwater repairs in swimming pools. Very cold water in Newark Delaware this time of year. Trying to build a suit for staying warm. Donning a 7mm I currently use plastic grocery bags lol. I like the Lycra idea. Less of a battle with the bulky O’Neil 7mm. I have 5mm headgear and gloves but all pool repair chemicals stick to neoprene. So I use vinyl gloves or nitrile atop the neoprene to fight that. Thank you for the tips and tricks. You’re helping an old dog learn new tricks

Hi Jennifer, I metal detect in the water... one day I was detecting a freshwater swimming area/lake and as the morning wore on, it got crowded with boaters. I was using a suit that has a small chest zipper, a diagonal one. Well...I got my small boat loaded up, and went to get out of that suit and my right shoulder just would not let me squiggle out of the top part of that suit. I tried for a while and got frustrated pretty bad. It was getting really hot outside and in the suit I was cooking. I got in my pickup and drove home, about an hour, no air conditioning... I flailed around in the yard when I got home, cooling myself with the garden hose, and finally got my arms and the rest of my body out of that suit. ( I have a shoulder that sometimes hurts from years of heavy carpentry) That was the last time I put that suit on. I have a nice suit now, that fits me and has a big ole back zipper and I can get out of it even when my shoulder is cranky. That trick you showed me will help so very much. Thank you, and thank you for the reply, it made me smile. George.

This is a great video! Thank you!! I loved how you actually tried them on when talking about them! Quick question, as someone who runs cold, and can afford only 1 suit, can I get away with a 5mm for local and Caribbean waters??
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 4 года назад
Maya J thanks for the feedback and kind words. As someone who also runs very could I would defiantly suggest a 5mm if you can only pick one suit. You may get a touch warm if you are in the tropics and the water is 80+ degrees, but honestly if that happens, just open the collar and lets some new water in. I have dove 5mm suits plenty of times in the Caribbean and never had an issue. Then if you are in colder water you could had gloves and a hooded vest and be ready for anything!

@@bluedescentphotos Thank you so much for replying! I have one last question. What is the upper temperature limit for drysuit diving for someone who gets cold easily? And will you do a drysuit video as well? Thank you!
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 4 года назад
@@mayaj3762 There isn't really a limit. Its just what each person is comfortable with. I dive my drysuit in the Florida springs which are 72* F on a regular basis and wouldn't ever consider a wetsuit, but then I know people who also dive those same springs in a 5mm and are perfectly happy. What limits me on wearing my drysuit EVERY dive is simply the time it takes to put on and how heavy it is to travel with. And YES a drysuit video will be happening soon!

Did you say that a 1mm suit is less flexible than 3mm im trying to get a suit for my friend she wants full bosy coverage from the sun but has sensitive skin. Whats the best option for her. I was thinking 1.5mm so its think enough but not harsh on her skin. Any advice would help thank you.
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 4 года назад
Hello! I tend to find the thin 1mm suits arent quite as stretchy as a good 3mm. I think it mostly has to do with the type of neoprene and fabrics being used. I would suggest getting her either a skin/rashguard for the full body, which is going to be the least irritating on her skin, (but won't give any thermal) or finding a 2 or 3mm that is made with the softest neoprene ...unfortunately the softest most supple neoprene is usually the most expensive. It might be best to go to your local dive shop and have her try on to see what she likes since she has sensitive skin. Sorry it's not a straight answer, but I hope this helped some!

Hi, scotts scuba service. I'm Corey, and I just subbed to your Chanel. I'm currently watching your video on wet suits. I have a question for you, if you can answer it. Last week, I was looking at some wet suit tops on Amazon.ca. And I ordered one that has a zipper on the front, and the sleeves are ĺycra. Are the wet suit tops easier to put on than wet suits? The reason why I'm asking I have a full length wet suit, at first I didn't I know how to put a wet suit, when I went surfing for the first time. And in the last little while I've been considering getting a wet suit top to wear, when I'm snorkeling and surfing. I have another question for you. My second question is, is putting on a rash guard underneath my wet suit for extra comfort a good idea? The reason why I'm asking is because when I'm surfing in the north Atlantic Ocean here in nova Scotia I some time put on my rash guard underneath my wet suit for extra warmth when I'm surfing. Am I the only person who surfs and snorkel dives who wears a rash guard underneath a wet suit? Thank you for your time in answering my questions. Have a pleasant day tomorrow. Corey.corey hansen from Canada.
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 3 года назад
Hello! Yes I would imagine just a wetsuit top is easier to get on. It may not be quite as warm because there are more places for water to move in and out though. But it all depends on your cold tolerance and the water temps. 2nd answer is yes a rash guard for comfort is a great idea. It will make getting the neoprene on easier and also give you a teeny bit more warmth as it will limit the water movement under your suit. Just make sure it is quality rashguard material. A plain T-shirt or similar would be very uncomfortable against your skin. Hope this helps!

Hi again, Scott's scuba. I'm writing to say "thank you" for your time in responding to my comments. I went surfing last week, here in nova Scotia. I surf in the north Atlantic, and it's cold. It's cold enough to wear a full length wet suit, and I had on my rash guard underneath my suit. I was comfortable with both my rash guard and my wet suit on. I managed to get up on the surf board a few times. I'm still thinking of getting one of those wet suit tops from Amazon. Thank you again for responding to my comments and advice, I really appreciate it. Corey.

Hm, you could wear neoprene socks that would keep your feet warm, but the only thing I know of that keeps you totally dry when submerged is a drysuit which wouldn't be practical for surfing...

Here's a stupid question, Do all wet suits have the zipper in the back? How do you know the difference?
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 3 года назад
Almost all do. There are some front zip options (not many companies offer this as it's slightly easier to get on, but more difficult to get out). A very very limited option is a no zip, Scubapro offered a suit like this where it's a cool option but you had to be a bit of a contortionist to get in and out of it. Knowing the difference would simply be looking over the suit before getting in. Look at the shape of the neck line, and legs and arms, almost all suits will have a bit of a curve, especially where your butt goes, there just needs to be more fabric there. If the suit IS front zip the person you are renting/buying from would certainly specify as it is not the norm. Hope that helps! Feel free to ask anything else/more on the subject

@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 3 года назад
You may need to try another brand. Some have REALLY skinny arms for some reason and that may be why you are struggling. You could try wearing like a lycra glove of some sort and that may help your skin slip through.

Maybe I missed it. Thicker Wetsuits would require extra weight to offset the bouyancy. What about someone with my issue? I'm 5'4". With a short inseam. And weigh 170 pounds. People look at me and don't believe I weigh that much. They think I weigh closer to 150. Sizing has always been an issue with me. Guess you heard this before, You're Pretty!!
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 4 года назад
Hello! Yes, thicker wetsuits do require more lead. For example, I dive 4 pounds in saltwater with a 3mm and 6lbs in saltwater with a 5mm. As for someone shorter I would try Akona, they have been the shortest inseam suits I have come across. Aqualung and Scubapro seem to run taller when people try them on in shop. Unfortunately you may always have some extra leg length to deal with unless you get something custom fit or tailored.

6:23 holy crap thats really warm water. thats about as warm as water gets around here (lakes). why the hell do you need a wet suite when the water is near 80 degrees? i was thinking a 3mm wet suit would be good down to at least 65-60.
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 3 года назад
Any water below your body temperature (98 degrees) can chill you after time. If I don't wear a wetsuit in water that is even in the 80's I get shivering cold and know many divers who think the same. I would never recommend a 3mm for water below 75 degrees. Unless your dives are incredibly short you would get extremely cold. Each person is different and has a different cold tolerance, but we dive waters that are regularly in the 60's and I have people on a regular basis getting chilled with 5mm.

It's the red hair and freckles. Being a "cold" person isn't directly your fault. The "cold-ness" towards others manifests from the nucleus of each freckle. Evolution has intentionally included this trait so the process of devouring souls isn't hindered by things such as "Empathy" or "Compassion". Nobody blames you.... ... THIS IS MY MAIN QUESTION IF I WAS IN A SWIMMJNG POOL DIVERS SUIT WOULD IT FKIAT ME BACK TO THE TOP ???? OR WOULD I HAVE TO SWIM UP TO THE SURFACE AGAIN ??? sorry if sounds stupid am trying learn about water sports and diving
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 2 года назад
Not sure what you are talking about with saying the name of where I am from. But to answer your main question, neoprene is buoyant. The thickness of the suit will determine how positively buoyant it is. No wetsuit can be used as a life saving device, they will make it harder to descend through the water column but they are not designed to take you back to the surface. They are designed to keep you warm.
