Check out as Josh Dillaman explains the very basics of how a rebreather works. In this video series we will go more and more in depth with each video as you learn about what Rebreathers are and how they work. In this video we are using a Dive Rite O2ptima CCR!

Hello, sir. Listen, I’m really high right now. I’ve come a long way and I don’t know how I got here, but my mind is so blown right now. How does it separate gases? The scrubbing of the CO2? Like…. It’s taking a gas away from a big ball of gases. Since when could we fricken SEPARATE gases, bro! I look forward to part 2, sir.

Cool video. I’m not a diver but I heard about ccr’s and was so intrigued on how it would work. Also glad you brought up how pressure increases as you increase depth, something someone like me never would have thought about.😀

Jenny didn't ask to be scared twice ;( Thanks for the video. I needed it broken down to fully understand. There's a lot that goes into diving. Its a fascinating hobby to learn about before i even commit to it.

Lol Jenny is very jumpy! and glad you liked it. We want to do some more videos in this series. There is alot to learn about diving. The first step is getting that open water class and just getting in the water!

Another key point is that air has 21% oxygen. When we breath we only use 4% so 17% is still left over! A re-breather can use this oxygen again, but in a traditional SCUBA it's just lost as bubbles. This is why you can be underwater much longer with a re-breather.

Hello! We've had alot of folks as this and we are planning on making part 2 this fall. Our shop has been super busy this summer which has slowed down our video making.

So do you need to open and close the oxygen and the diluting canisters?
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 3 года назад
Only when you begin and end the dive. The system automatically (or manually if you choose to fly it that way) adds small amounts of Dil and O2.

@@bluedescentphotos as I’m still very afraid of this, if I ever do scuba I think I’m just going to stick with a standard open circuit >~
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 3 года назад
@@jakeb.7997 There is nothing wrong with that. Starting standard scuba is the best, and really only, option anyways. Someone should be very confident and comfortable with open circuit scuba diving before considering a rebreather. Once a diver is ready though these systems are amazing.

How long can you stay underwater by using a re-breather? I assume the o2 tank will eventually run out? What happens if you breathe too fast?
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 3 года назад
Hello, a great many things determine how long you can stay underwater on a rebreather. Typically that amount of time is based on your scrubber life. Depending on many factors 4-6 hours is a safe guess on a max dive length. You have to be very careful not to overbreathe your system or the scrubber cannot do it's job of removing the CO2 properly (because it is a chemical reaction there needs to be some rest time). You could run yourself out of O2, but if you have entered the water with a full tank that is typically not a determining factor in your dive length. You use very little gas volume while on a closed circuit rebreather.

And what if rebreather stops
@bluedescentphotos
@bluedescentphotos 3 года назад
Great question! Rebreather divers always carry at least one bailout bottle. The size and number of bailout bottles depends on the dive that is being done. If the rebreather would malfunction or fail the diver would bailout to open circuit and terminate the dive.

oh, not what I thought. I thought it would break the co2 bond and just give back the oxygen and take oxygen from the water.
@flakdampler11
@flakdampler11 Год назад
That would require on-board electrolysis. While technically possible, it is a slow process. Now that’s just with pure water. Electrolysis on salt water produces different biproducts, sodium hydroxide and chlorine, which are both not something you’d want to breathe.
@gdotone1
@gdotone1 Год назад
@@flakdampler11 I was thinking free oxygen in the water. as for the CO2 we breathe out no Cl. but that's just the miracle I thought a rebreather did. I thought they had figured out how to be a fish.
@flakdampler11

@@gdotone1 oh yeah that would be cool. It’s probably possible to make something that works like gills. I wonder what the limitation is.

@@flakdampler11 i imagine size at first. i bet the military already has such. probably classified beyond top, top secret. theirs might desalinated the salt water, using either a membrane, or catalyst, or enzyme, or electrolysis to get the oxygen out of water. lol.
