Ascending 14er Wetterhorn Peak via its southeast ridge on September 3, 2019 from the Matterhorn Creek Trailhead. This involves class 3 climbing, significant exposure, and great scenes and high views in the rugged San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado......and possibly a significant road trip, too.

Nice weather and the natural wonders of the San Juans made this climb seem quite idyllic even with the hazards up high. The fun and engaging class 3 climb is preceded by a trail approach with easy to moderate endurance stats. It is not only a scenic and manageable hike, but a great Colorado 14er climb in the full sense. What did you think? Does the final pitch look scary? Happy trails and travels. -Centennial Treks

That class 3 section really isn't as intimidating as it looks. Fun as hell to climb.

I concur - it isn't as intimidating as the footage may make it look. I suppose the in-person look at it corresponds better to the actual difficulty, both physical and mental. In any case, yes, for sure a fun climb.

Definitely on my list for next summer. Did SW ridge of Sneffels last month and the ridge reminds me of that till the staircase, which looks a bit like the Home Stretch on Longs in terms of difficulty. Very interesting route and the beautiful view of San Juan is icing on the cake. Can’t wait

The final pitch on Wetterhorn is probably a bit more dangerous than the Homestretch on Long's - it is looser & steeper, but shorter.

Thanks CT. May have to wait till I get a higher clearance vehicle first. That last 4 miles seem pretty rough based on some videos I’ve seen. Silver creek TH (sunshine/redcloud/Handies) seems much more accessible in comparison

I remember the road to the Redcloud TH being rougher than the ones leading to Wetterhorn, provided you go on foot for the very last stretch of the Wetterhorn road.

Did this peak last weekend. The road to final road split wasn’t bad and it’s only 0.7mi from Matterhorn Creek TH. Good area to pitch a camp too. Pretty neat mountain

Great, comprehensive video! I like to plan hard for my 14ers, lesson learned from getting off route attempting Mt Lindsey....anyway, planning on this 14er next July along with Mt Sneffels, can’t wait. This video is the most complete and detailed video I have seen, and I have watched a ton! Thank you for your work.

Hey James thanks for watching and for your kind feedback. I am actually hoping to get back to the San Juans this summer myself, and am hoping to climb Mt. Sneffels too - (I got shut down on that one last year). And you are wise for studying the mtns. & routes beforehand. Best of luck!! -CT

Thanks for watching Peggy - and that Bach organ piece does seem to capture the moment.

As you ascended the final class 3 pitch, I was thinking that’s going to be tricky on the way down. Beyond my ability I think. Great footage though. 👍👍

Thanks for watching this video Neil. I feel like it is maybe the "best kept secret" on this channel, having the fewest views for how amazing the climb & scenery are......As for the final stretch, I think the descent footage might make it appear a bit more scary than it really is. As long as you concentrate and are mindful of where you step, you shouldn't have much of a problem.

Great video thx for posting. Contemplating the same route - trying to get a real idea or to firmly quantify the amount of exposure and where it may be greatest - its difficult to gauge from the videos and trail reports I have seen and read. Understandably one would get quite roughed up if one had a spill anywhere along the staircase- but are we taking 50 - to 60 feet max tumble of are we falling off the face of a cliff and going down 250 feet or so? I also understand there may be some exposure at the slab itself - might you elaborate on that as well. Any feedback appreciated by myself and I am sure, countless others considering the same hike thx

Thanks for watching this. The exposure is greatest on the final stretch to the summit. But I am of the opinion that the footage makes it look a bit more steep and intimidating than it actually is. Also, I think when we physically look at a slope we are on, we often tend to overestimate its steepness. Trying to mentally index for this tendency, I am going to guess that the final stretch is roughly 45 degrees for the most part. At no point on the descent was I compelled to face inward. Certainly I don't want to say it wouldn't be possible to have a lengthy fall here, but I imagine someone could likely regain control fairly quickly in the event of a slip. The slab is where you emerge at the final stretch when you pass through the notch. The gully that constitutes the final stretch actually continues down far below the slab. So as such, the slab itself is really no more exposed than the rest of the overall gully. I know the footage at roughly 27:30 makes it look bad. Really, the final stretch doesn't require any especially difficult moves. As I say, the rock is pretty solid - just be mindful of some loose gravel on the small ledges. If you try this good luck, and feel free to share your post-climb thoughts on this thread if you are so inclined. -CT
