WEYMOUTH HALF MARATHON 2023 RACE RECAP - EDDBUD - RUNNING SHOE SELECTION and PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
I was in DORSET for the WEYMOUTH HALF MARATHON 2023.
Find out how i got on, the shoes i wore and my thoughts on the race route.
I analyse my performance and give you some race footage to set the scene. How did the NIKE VAPORFLY NEXT% 3 get on navigating me across the scenic route?
Great conditions though a tough build up to the race for me, one day i will have the perfect preparation for a race!
Hold tight people, stay strong and we WILL make it through.

Good time Edd enjoyed the break down. Used to visit there alot when I lived in UK. Love the medal great dino fan myself. I think I would have chosen the Adidas Prime X Strung. I think they would have saved your gig legs much more. 👍👍

Great racing Edd. Brings back memories from 20+ years ago, Weymouth is the only place in UK where I spent more than a couple of days, I was playing bass for this little tour through a few different towns in the area, good times. Didn't carry an amp though, so I had an easier job than you.

Vaporflys are the only shoes I go half size down and I find the fit great, I find it is even a bit better in the 3 than the 2👍

It sounds like all things considered, you had a terrific finish time! If all the contributing factors were ideal you may have PB’d so I think you should be quite happy with the result.

Definitely know that “feeling fatigued before a race” - too many times to count! Recommend taking a gel at 8-9 mile mark in a half marathon race! Great job Edd. Our PRs are close. I’m like 1:30 and change.. would love 1:29!!

That was a very good time Edd considering your circumstances. Well done! Now it’s just to double that distance for your upcoming marathon! I just completed my marathon in Rome last weekend. On those cobble stones you know. My goal was under 4h and I managed 3:51. Boy was i chuffed with my performance especially now as I am no spring chicken. I used Adizero pro 3s and had no issues what so ever. What a race Rome is. The sites, the organisers, happy people. Could not fault it. Can highly recommend to all runners out there. Wishing you all the best of like on your marathon run.😊

Good race Edd.. interesting take on the vaporfly 3..the vaporflys have never been good for me cos the forefoot cushioning gives up around 9-10mi..looking forward to see if they fixed some things..I did my 1st race of the season in alphafly V1..31 seconds faster than same race last but it was super cold with below zero f windchill..great to see your getting back to fitness..congrats 👏

Great job pacing given the elevation changes. Also thanks on the tip about the upper being like the Streakfly. I also had issues with the Streakfly upper which never worked for me because I probably needed to size down.

Perhaps in terms of performance offer less impulse and is less faster than v1 or v2. Now I prefer AAAP3 over NVN3. Is a better shoe in all areas.

Nice race, Edd. Yeah, my races always seem to line up on gigging weekends too. Although I much prefer when the gig is the night of the morning race. Load in and load out aren’t so fun, but 2-3 hours of music can make me forget how much my legs hurt. 🏃‍♂️ 🎸 🎶

Well done Edd. I was really gutted to miss it through injury last year, and was very tempted this year as i really wanted that fantastic medal, but doin my first marathon in April and couldn't trust myself to take it easy in a "race" so didn't want to risk it. The medal looks even better than last year though so hopefull even better next year!

First, congrats on great race! 👍 It's a good indicator for a speedy marathon time. 😎 Secondly, the upper on the Vaporfly NEXT% V2 & V3 just doesn't match that of the original Vaporweave IMO, which locks your foot right in. I have a couple pairs (pink & mango; both with ~ 100 miles) which still feel great and are pretty snappy when it comes to race pace. 😉

Yeah being tired never helps, I was the same with the Falmouth half. It was good, and over 400m elevation I still managed to pull a respectable 1.40 I did run in my mizuno wave rebellion pro's, and I feel whilst they were a sinus choice, I can't help but feel my puma fast-r might have been a better choice. Got the 45 mile traverse next week, expecting it to be a quagmire so fine and bought the mafate speed 4 hopefully they'll look after me 👍

I also ran Sunday my watch only recorded 20.55 k. I did spot you on the Rodwell trail you past me in the other direction I was a good 7 mins behind you. I finished with a 1h 39 mins. It was a fantastic day and I love my first half marathon and I'm already looking forward to the portland 10 m and the egdon (Weymouth) 10 k in the next couple of months 💪👍

Well done Edd! Looks like some great scenery on that course. I had planned to do the Rock n Roll half marathon in DC this past weekend...but...I never quite got around to training! So I had to bail. Going to get back into training mode and get ready for a 10 mile race in late April. Should be great Spring weather by then, and I think 10 miles remains my favorite distance to race.

Good job, Edd! I really like these type of videos. But considering that the circumstances weren't ideal, and you still ran faster than your last half marathon, I think the vaporfly 3 might need some more testing to see if it's better or not. Which shoe would your yacht look like?

I think the tunnel and the tight turns might affect it. Lots of people commented it was short over several years

Well done Ed. I had the taff trail half marathon (not a trail race) on Sunday. I managed to grab a new PB (01:46:05). Taking 49 seconds off my Wokingham half time from 3 weeks ago. I'll be doing the rose inn series, Caerphilly 10k and Treforest 10k next. After Sunday's race I noticed that the midsole foam in my newish VF v2 is a lot firmer on the right foot than the left. So compared the v2 with my v1 and it's softness in the left shoe is exactly the same as my v1s. Manufacturing issue/defect? Would you return them? They did bag me a PB in the last 2 races but I feel that I may have issues if I ever use them for a marathon.

I’ve always felt that if GPS shows the course as significantly short, it probably is, especially on an open course. Berlin is obviously accurately measured and even if you run on the blue line, GPS will still be over slightly because of the turns etc. Switch backs and tight turns will add to the distance, rather than subtract from it, but in this case, probably the tunnels had an impact, assuming the course was laid out correctly.

It was fine. More to do with the turns and quick double backs. Probably the gps figuring they haven’t happened depending upon settings.

If Vaporfly3 is like a Streakfly, and I love Streakfly then I have to buy Vaporfly3 one day on sale 🙂 Vaporfly2 is to narrow in forfoot for me and is nothing special to me, I noticed for my road training runs I more use Nike Tempo or Alphafly1 or Streakfly or FBR-NOA2 then Vaporfly2.

In theory it is best to know the course. If your brain knows what is ahead of you it will allow you to slightly faster. Your brain has an automatic mechanism for protecting you from dying. But if it knows what is ahead it will allow you to go slightly faster to the limit. I like the theory about the brain controlling you. And not you controlling the brain.
