"Next on the list is Idira [...] she's an unsanctioned psyker which means" she'll get a bullet to the head at the earlierst moment the game allows me to.
It does help you have many MANY tools, to see the Odyssey to the end, however many or few remain A truth: Why personally dirty your hands, when many tools exist
@@MuppetLord1 In the FIRST THREE FIGHTS with her, she succeeded in BLOWING HERSELF UP EVERYTIME she used her veilbreaching powers... She's a bigger danger to the group than the enemy, and a waste of space if she can't use half her powers. And i say this playing a Sanctic psyker myself.
I want to thank Owlcat for giving me a playable drukhari comapnion. My favorite faction. And yes, Marazhai is a nice melee damage dealer and an interesting companion for evil playthrough
Yeah I find him pretty whimsical and fun. Also I was trying to figure out how tall he was meant to be from his character model a few days ago, so I googled ‘Marazhai height’ and the first result that came up was a comment on a Reddit thread describing him as “too tall for a traditional twink” so. Make of that what you will.
Hey, just wanted to say thanks for doing this breakdown - trying to work out how stats and builds work in a new game is always my least favourite part of getting into them, but once you’ve gotten it figured out the game becomes so much fun, so content like this is a godsend when I’m about to play something for the first time. (You also coincidentally seem to have pretty much exactly the same taste in games as me, so I’m very much enjoying the fact that I’ve gotten to benefit from your coverage so much recently )
I've been enjoying the break down videos (though I generally forget to comment as I listen at work but can't really stop to type) and it's good to hear that it sounds like you're doing better.
@@SlanderedGamingI did exactly that and my favorite part of the game is to tell Abelard to introduce me properly every time we meet someone, and it's hilarious. He's a good companion, character and overall just a good guy (by 40k standarts ofc)
Got a little overwhelmed by all the skills, abilities, talents and the like so a medium length video like this is great for somebody like me, who isn't even level 10 yet.
21:28 I don't understand why Owlcat changed Jae to an Officer. She was a Marksman in the Alpha and given her Gunslinger and various proficiencies with Ranged weapons it should've stayed that way.
I've seen a lot of people saying things about Marazhai like "I can fix him." Meanwhile I'm like "ISTG if he's a monster like Camellia from Wrath of the Righteous, then I'm killing him on every playthrough." All the other companions like great 👍
Feeding upon the psychic residue of suffering is the only way dark eldars can stave off the slow consumption by the Chaos God Slaanesh of their own souls. "Fixing" Marazhai would mean his soul would be eaten by an eldritch abomination, suffering for all eternity.
@@jackylepecheurNot really. Dark Eldar and regular Eldar are able to transition into the other culture. Dark Eldar aren’t a separate race, they’re just a different culture. It’s very possible for a Dark Eldar to give up their ways, join a Craftworld, and be given a spirit stone to no longer need to feed off suffering.
Dark Eldar are very much a separate race, not just a culture. They have greatly diminished psychic aptitude and more developed physical attributes. Even their basic psychic essence is completely different. Craftworlders are more resigned and hopeless, Drukhari are frantic and unstable.
@@jackylepecheur Dark Eldar are fully capable of abandoning their ways and joining their cousins on a Craftworld, Exodite Planet, or become a Harlequin.
Owlcat Studio's games are always jarring to get into, and with WH40K rulesets being incorporated, it's mad confusing. Great video. Honestly helped me clear Act 1 in a breeze on Unfair difficulty. Keep up the great work man!
I turned Argenta into a heavy bolter-heavy flamer Archmilitant. She is basically unstoppable, had to respec her once to drop melta weapon proficiency to pick up second skin but otherwise if you focus on her abilities and skills with a bolter and a flamer you can turn her into an absolute monster, probably THE most powerful ranged combatant imo.
Thanks bro! Super useful, I hope you are going to hit this game hard with your typically thorough and well thought out hot takes, reviews, commentary, etc. Really looking forward to this one.
Man Heinrix has the exact build I was planning on using. I wanna use him but I also want to avoid redundancy so it looks like I’ll have to rethink my MC’s build.
If he's anywhere near as overpowered as space marines are in tabletop RPG (which is to say, way closer to lore than to the war game), he's going to be a hard option to pass up.
Very sad there isn't some sort of Ork you could manage to recruit. Such as a Blood axe - Orks that willingly hire themselves out to non-ork forces or an Ork suffering some sort of head trauma that gains higher cognitive function or something similar to that :|
An Ork companion via DLC would be awesome we could also add a Tau to that even if I'm more likely to shoot them over the Ork and while very unlikely I'd love a Necron Companion something like an exiled Cryptark or a disgraced minor Lord. Though the true cherry on top at least for me would be a chance to 'trade' Ulfar for a Thousand Sons Sorcerer if you went heretical.
You'll need to make an updated guide for the release version as there are a ton of changes which subtly change how you'd upgrade in your Archtype wheel. For example, for Abelard you only really need a base of 45 Strength to unlock Heavy Armour so you only ever need to get 5+ Strength once at the start of the game; After that you want to go full Toughness, you can also get insanely high Parry that scales off Toughness and Armour using Thick Skin and with Heavy Armour it just adds even more Parry, as well as additional Deflection stacks with him now from other Talents, so focus on that too. Get Taunting Scream and any type of ability which scales off Toughness and Damage Retaliation such as Sworn Enemy - which is useful against a boss or scary stuff like Necrons. I also went full Divination Idira which benefits from her +1 to Psy level including her passive which removes the enemy's ability to land critical strikes and her buffs provide additional bonuses as you can build her to fully fill her in story role now which is awesome. I built Heinrix with a mindset to replicate a Retribution Paladin from WoW approach, which is psychic powers which debuff enemies or boost damage to super charge attacks and support the tank which is usually Abelard. I never really picked any of his Warrior abilities or talents, didn't need to, all his Biomancy stuff is good enough and better when pared with Abelard or Ulfar.
Thanks for this video, very happy to see a breakdown of the act 3 companions, and can't wait to play with Ulfar. I'll probably try to make the melee/ranged arch-militant work even if it's worse than just going single shot into burst.
@@SlanderedGaming You may want to post a link to this video on the subreddit, I think a lot of people would find it interesting, quite a bit of discussion about companions, this seems like the only video that goes into so much depth.
Most notable bottom lines: There is only 1 single companion focused on intelligence in act 1 (Tech Priest) so if youre not bringing him you kinda have to go int. One of the 2 available warriors is a Psyker and stacking psykers isnt great due to warp shenanigans so if you want to bring 2 warriors and Indira - MC should roll a warrior. Unfortunately it seems that most companions get more interesting features than the main character - basically the opposite of Wrath.
I mean, it's Act 1. By the time you have more companions than slots, the act is about to be over. Psyker veil meter isn't that harsh tbh, evne moreso if you have one of the veil reduction talents on Cassia or a psyker. Like 9/10 times I've gotten Perils it was because Idira did another fucky-wucky, not because I pushed the veil meter up into the danger zone.
@@magni5648 Psyker veil meter isnt consistent. In some fights its fine but in some others you really dont get much room to play with (or none at all for that matter - gl having 2 dead characters). Also some abilities you dont get in act 1 like indira using heroic psy lightning cost A LOT.
@@WhirlwindHeatAndFlash There's a couple fights with the veil already damaged, but it's overall not a big deal in my experience. Also, I don't evne use the lightning that much. Idira is there to buff and snipe form the backline.
Will be interesting to see which companions you can keep if you decide to go the heretic route, being able to turn the space marine or sister of battle into a traitor would be a cool if possible.
The thing is Aeldari (every kind) are more allergic to chaos than any other race in the setting and they don't get corrupted but immediately eaten. So even the drukhari should bail if you start drawing 8 pointed stars.
@@jankodes197 i mean outside of imperialis and heriticus moral alignments there will be Benevolentia, which is pretty much the sensible good person route.

Idirra works fine on daring with no investment in operative 'abilities'. Use 'talent' picks to gather operative talents, use 'common talent' to pick psyker talents, and use all ability selections to grab psker powers. Analyze, with exploit stacking + psychic scream is great. Get Adira the psyker range talent and veil stabilization talent as early common talent picks. Do not waste a 'talent' (class talents + common talents) pick on a 'common talent' (common talent only, includes psker talents). Pasqal is the only weird character where his mechanicus talents are not available from the 'common talent' list- making his balance for builds potentially the hardest.
Thanks for this excellent overview. Do characters gain XP even if not in your party or do you have to pick them for them to level up? Do you personally tend to always pick the same five, and if so who are they?
Characters gain XP while outside the party and which ones I choose depends on which disposition I am running. The party members for my imperialis and heretic runs are listed in the description for my videos covering both.
My main Party in the latter stages was my Officer Rogue Trader, Cassia, Pasqal, Yrilet, Ulfar, and either Jae or Argenta. I only kept Pasqal on the Team for combat though because by endgame my Rogue Trader had a significant advantage in Tech Use skill
I WAS thinking about building my Rogue Trader to go Operative into Bounty Hunter with the idea of pick one enemy and say "I dont want YOU to live anymore", before debuffing them or buffing myself to maximize damage then POP them for benefits. But with so many operatives in companions and likely being able to build the Eldar Sniper that way... might have to look at a different build for myself?
You also have to consider whether or not you want those Operatives in your party. If there's one you don't want then that provides an opening for you to play the class in that way.
I'll say this u can have 2 operatives in the party it isn't to bad to stack exploits. Only issue is if u add more you start losing out on other options
This is the video I have been waiting for - Thx Slandered! One question the Ship abilities/Talents do you get them free or do you need to buy them? ie forgo some combat abilities to get them.
There is one. It's a button in the inventory screen, allows you to disable helmets and special backpacks (like with hellguns), and change clothes colors on your main char and mercenaries.
Great video and Indepth explanation for the companions! Well, what is the best choice/class for the main character? Officer? I wanted a Melee/Range character where I can go in or fall back depending on the situation. What would you suggest?
Awesome video. Quick question, considering the npc companions available, what class and role would be the best fit for the main character, as to fill any obvious gaps in the party?
I dont mind spoilers so if you are fine with it, can you tell me if recruiting the Eldar sniper will make any companion hate me? Im kinda expecting it given that she's a Xenos but I really want her in my team.
I love that Space Marines are a bit like tanks. Super tough and powerful but without support vulnerable to ambush and being overwhelmed. I like the idea of the Rogue Traders squad basically making that marine shine (play officer for max fun)
Yea, a bit of stuff in 40k RPG is if you're breaking open Deathwatch books, you're really asking for it... mostly due to Eacalation in the journey... this is a case of no kidding
@@SlanderedGaming don't listen to them! Beseech the ruinous powers of chaos for your wellbeing instead. They won't just keep you healthy, they'll make improvements!
Did they really remove unnatural traits (multipliers)? Essentially would be handwaiving the magnitude of difference in stat differences that should be there, like eldar agility, ork toughness, and outlandish space marine qualities. /eyeroll
@@SlanderedGaming Well, okay then. Yea from what I've seen, this is looking so far from the tabletop... unfortunately. I get devs are looking for a kind of pacing/progression, but I'm cynical and reckon the redesign was to satiate a producers opinion on what will sell. The game would have been fine without touching much of the rule system - like BG3. Devs keep doing this kind of crap with warhammer titles. Stats are so convoluted in video games anymore. It's about a desired feeling for players than actually providing internal consistency. I digress though.
Probably playing a guardsmen officer origin (don't like the astra militarum rename) with shooty/diplomatic stat spread on a first playthrough. Wondering if the game will have handheld heavy bolter, lascannon, multi melta options since those are usually only for devastator marines but one can hope.
Heavy weapons, when you don't have power armor to bear the weight and recoil, are normally either mounted on a vehicle or served by a crew on an emplacement.
@@burgertime6372 Lol. Not really. In the Beta, the eldar did this, but there was a reason. And also, her char wasnt fleshed out much at that point. But, sure, kill her and lose second or third most op char in the roster. And, btw, she is better than spacemarine, de facto. There is unique pendant that gives +10 to all her skills and etc. Cassia is number one powerwise, obviously. In Beta it was: Cassia, SoB and Eldar as the most powerful depending on how you build them. The Dark Eldar, on other hand - it depends, mb he is mostly for Chaos players and such.
@@burgertime6372 lol. So, you want spoilers? Bc the reasons for it are spoilers. You group will end up with DE anyway, so its changes almost nothing in the grand scheme of things, from my pov. I only agree that at the time they should have handled this situation better in terms of storytelling. But, that was then, atm it should be better. And the reason was good even then. Also - if you think that the xeno ones are the only who will leave or betray you, well... i wouldnt be so optimistic. Depending on the choices and how you treat them, i suspect that certain others absolutely can backstab you at certain points in game, probably in the second half.
@@SlanderedGaming Maybe be calling him trash was too harsh, I just think he is outclassed by Argenta and Pascal for that role. It isn't that he CAN'T do well, it's just that others do what he's capable of better. For a ranged slot he is also just a giant bullseye being so huge and not really having good defensive options. I was not able to find a good role for him in my party, I really hope he gets reworked for release because having a space marine that is just kinda average vs other party members seems so bizarre.
@@SlanderedGaming well we had various WH novels like ciaphas cain series that featured romance in some capacity and also as the equivalent of imperial nobility basically as a rogue trader we have an "excuse" to indulge in such things
Have not seen it called out, but is there skills like lock pick and charm that we need to put into. And if so could you say which are common and which are very rare in the game.
Tech use helps open containers but has a lot of other uses as well. There are multiple conversation related skills. Persuasion is probably the most important one. This video reviews all the skills: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C8ju3bJa4jU.html
Had a quick check to see if you had an updated video but I don't see any other info in the team building one - there are 3 other possible party members :)
I did think you held them out for that reason but wasn't completely sure as even our Dark Eldar buddy isn't completely obvious to most people and is clearly mid/late act 3 but I take a step back and look forward to seeing the down the line version @@SlanderedGaming
You only need Cassia. She is the best tank (literailly immune by both physical and magic attcks), best dps (largest aoe and no freidnly fire, and kill any boss, I mean any boss, in 2 rounds).
I can see myself playing around with mods to change Ulfar a bit. If he was an Ultramarine, I could see keeping him as a Marksman, but... I mean, c'mon, he's a Space Wolf. Why isn't he a Warrior?
@@SlanderedGaming Plus, hottake, an Ultramarine would have made more sense for the story since the only Traitor Marines I've seen so far are Word Bearers. I know the boys in blue are in EVERYTHING, but it would have made sense here. That, or have us fight the K-Sons
So looking at all these folks...yeah pretty sure I'll be going with just Abelard (CQC), Argenta (Ranged), Ulfar (Ranged), and Jae (Hottest Gal and Ranged) as I'll be making myself into a Melee Swordsman. The rest I'll just let them hang around the ship and help it stay flying.
@@SlanderedGaming I’m sure she would but after looking at the combat via a few more guides…as a LONG-time RTS gamer, it’d drive me crazy as to how SLOW the battles are. So I will not be getting the game. Sigh…disappointing…
Surely they have balanced pascal since the beta? In the beta he just does all the skill based stuff so you don't even need the skills on anyone else. He has higher stats that anyone for pretty much all the stats
WIth so many godamn options and flavors, I am really stuck in what to choose. A good problem to have, but I see no solution. Leaning towards some sort of a backline buffer, noble with officer, some sort of commisar? give extra turns to other minions. I am leaning to an all psyker team as well, including my main character? gosh I don't know
Do the Melta weapons suck or something? Because Inquisitors aide Jurgen has taught me that Melta weapons are the solution to any possible problem with a bit of ingenuity... and aim.
I have never tried them before so not sure. It's not that they suck so much that none of the party members slide into a heavy ranged weapons build easily except Ulfar and he already has an amazing Bolter.
@@dnaseb9214 that vibe should be the marine won't work with you/tries to kill you. I hope they don't have a Space Marine be so pathetic he gets corrupted along with us.
Hi, does anyone play on Console(Xbox) and is there a way to switch between party members during combat? I ONLY can alternate between the two party members(begining of the game) when i end the turn, then the enemy has his turn And after this my othe character has his turn. I can't find out how i switch between my two characters in combat in the same turn. Thanks in advanced for any help on this.
Planning to do a benevolentia playthrough first, but the fact that so many characters have an imperial disposition is definetly stressful. I surehope i won't end up with only 2 companions by the endgame.
Unless you go full Chaos cultist I doubt they'll leave you. They'll just complain you're too soft or too tolerant but you're the Rogue Trader and that gives you a lot of leeway.
Do hope we get a corruption system, would be some good shit to turn everyone to the chaos gods... All of them have plenty of room to fit in that except maybe the eldar.
