There aren't many time I question wanting to build a boat, but this week I have certainly beaten myself up, wondering why I would put myself, my family and more importantly, our entire RU-vid Viewership through this nightmare.
This RU-vid build series is all about what it takes to build a Catamaran from Scratch. There is so much detail in a build of this size and so many different techniques involved in bringing her to fruition. I trust you will find something that may help with your current or future project, repair or dream boat build. If you feel there is value, please let us know and comment so we can continue to produce content worth your valuable time.

I feel for you on the redo of the window opening. I just cut my car all apart in an area that was "finished'. Knew it wasn't right, Knew it looked wrong, it just took me a few days to come to terms with having to do it over. No one would have seen it. No one would have noticed, but I couldn't live with it. Now that your windows are to your liking, you can sleep well at night, and every time you look at it in the future you won't be beating yourself up. Great job on the entire build. I have watched every episode from the beginning. I have a great appreciation for your dedication to quality, your persistence, perseverance, skill, and talent.

A dusty/dirty laborious job, without it being done makes the boat half finished. Fairing is essential to get that quality finish. Nice to see you not scrimping on fairing. Well done team Life on the hulls.

Hey Ross I use denatured alcohol with food coloring mixed in as apply it with a rag. The alcohol evaporates leaving the food coloring as a guide coat for faring.

Good episode Ross With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight could you have done a lot of that fairing before turning the deck mold over? Good job straightening out that window surround I'm sure couldn't have lived with it.
@latitudeash
@latitudeash Год назад
5mm, come on Ross the window would have pulled that straight when you put them in. You are a perfectionist....lol.. But that said it looks 1000% better now that you did the work. Another thing to remember is you want to be able to wipe the cabin ceiling every few weeks to stop mould. Hence I would not put the Alligator texture on the over head. I simply think you will be ending up with not much difference and adding to the issue of simply wiping the overhead clean with a damp cloth. Just paint it and see if you like it. Then if not you can always put the texture on it.

Ross, you are one of the hardest working people I've ever seen. The boat is going to be beautiful and hopefully you and your hard working lady will be able to start enjoying all the hard work you've both put into this boat. God bless and remember to pace yourself we aren't spring chickens anymore. All our good wishes from Oregon U.S.A

So lucky you’ve managed to get your hands on a power flexible sander, overhead work is always brutal. Nice work there Ross, so cool to be seeing inside the boat! I was able to see the Tasmanian oak on the channel A BOAT BY THE RIVER, I couldn’t believe how tight the grain was, beautiful. Love the interior choices so far, Janet’s got some pretty good design sense and you too, it’s going to be so awesome.

Rossco…, if you didn’t fix it you’d be looking at it everyday you’re on the boat and be either; ignoring, laughing, or crying… - I reckon it would have been the latter - you’re too much of a perfectionist (which is awesome)… 👌

It's too bad you couldn't have done all the fairing of the ceiling and other overhead surfaces while the part was in the mold or prior to flipping over to install on the hull. Also, are you going to use any type fabric/vinyl headliner in the salon and other living areas? You could cover a multitude of imperfections. One more thing: too bad you can't hire a couple of young people to do the overhead work. I can't imagine how sore you are at the end of the day after constantly looking up and extending your arms.
@Helicamman
@Helicamman Год назад
I use a lot of the raptor box liner spray, if I could give you one tip, a rough surface for it to stick to, I think the outside roof was sanded too smooth, I know how anal you are about sanding, ROUGH!!! 120 the raptor will cover, and do a test panel and do a smooth sand and a rough sand and spray them and test them for delamination after it is set. Just trying to help, would hate to see you have issues after you are done, and if Im not seeing how rough you have it disregard my post.

Doing anything even badly is really fookin hard. Did Darren just offer criticism or did you just only hear criticism? one window sill off in a boat that is built way better than most is saying something to me. All that being said your back comes first. even if for us viewers the progress and episodes slow to a half, a quarter or none at all. or you get staff in. Or an apprentice working cheap to learn all your high end skills and experience of fibre glass manufacturing. Health and safety first. whole point of building a boat is for your enjoyment more than anyone's.

Great job as usually :-) Why don't you hook up the vacuum cleaner to the sander? The 150mm Rotex you got (l have 3 old ones and 1 new model, the new one is crap) is the BEST dual action sander and leaves next to no dust with the vacuum cleaner. Also look in to 3M dry guide coat to highlight the low spots. Another tip is to get your self a support board and stand it upright with a piece of foam on top to rest your hand on while sanding. Awesome job mate 👍
@daversj

A Mirka Deros or a Festool ETS sander would make that nasty ceiling job much better. I sand drywall with my Mirka over my head without a mask, its almost dustless.

lets face it, if you didn't fix those problems, all you would've done is kick yourself for years to come. So you did the right thing! fix it, get it over with and then you know you have peace of mind. Then you can go forward. Also Ross if you don't get it perfect once you put the window and trim on it will straighten things out for ya.

Great work as always! One question though, you say you glue the shelf with epoxy and then are going to gelcoat on top. My limited experience say that epoxy will stick to gelcoat but gelcoat can't stick to epoxy?

Ross, you've built every inch of that boat to such a high standard that even a minor flaw is going to stick out like a sore thumb. I suppose that's the price of perfection, but it's worth paying as the final product is going to be breathtaking.
