So genuine! I feel her fear and I understand it. I kept waiting for Dad's reassurance, but it would probably sound hollow since there are no guarantees of safety. Good video!
this kid is so damn brave. I'm probably four times her age and would've been all like "SHIT IT'S RIGHT FUCKING THERE! BRACE FOR IMPACT GUYS WTF!" and nope'd the hell out of there.
I think a lot of awe and a healthy bit of fear is a quite appropriate response to a multitonne animal taking an interest in you. And there's no doubt that whale is checking them out about the same amount they are checking it out. I grew on the ocean, and I still can't help but let out a little "Oh Shit" when the rare occurance of a whale twice the length of my boat glides bye. We need a little more awe in our lives. It makes their peaceful nature all the more incredible. So curse away lass!
terrific video and experience. I love the way your daughters voice goes from paralyzed in fear to playful and excited in a second. It made me laugh. Thanks for posting
Absolutely love the footage. The clear water allows you to see the rest of the whale, rather than just the part that shows above the water. Most people that get to see a humpback (me),just get to see from the hump to the tail. I thought her excited commentary added to the excited. Loved it!
Right after she ends with "It's coming towards us!" one of them jumped into the air, grabbed her by the hair, threw her far away and broke her dads wheelchair's wheels. No but really how can this video not make you happy? It's great, and I am really happy someone who really appreciate it like her gets to see it too.
This video by far is absolutely amazing! This is actually my first time seeing a real whale besides on cartoon shows and it made me respect nature more they are absolutely beautiful creatures!
What an experience!!! That was amazing. And your daughter is funny going between a cheery "hello" to the one farther away to hyperventilating when they got close. And she's a better videoagrapher than most on RU-vid. Well done family!! Thanks for sharing!!
in-f-ing-credible. I mean, we all know they are intelligent, but it's so obvious that they are self-aware and curious about us when they aren't being hunted. So beautiful.
Great life lesson dad! So much better for her than sitting in front of a game console. She will grow up to be a much more interesting young woman. Bravo
Oh come on, her fear is 100% appropriate for the situation, and if anything makes the experience more marvelous. That's the whole concept of the sublime, astoundingly beautiful while simultaneously frightening. Her reaction perfectly captures a spectacular moment between whale and human and sea, thus further intensifying the gravity of the experience for both her and us as viewers. Cheers!
I'm so sorry to hear that. For healing I recommend canoeing with children and watching some of the amazing wildlife this planet has provided for! Cheers mate!
This would be mindblowingly awesome. I can't believe there are people who could give a shit less about the creatures we are fortunate enough to share the planet with.
Whales just have that affect on you, trust me. They are magnificent. And I can imagine she was scared out of her pants it was going to flip the boat over. I was that excited seeing a whale a mile away. I can't imagine seeing one that close, let alone the noises I might make. LOL!
I have been on houseboats this close to whale and my grandfather has been on his fishing boat where a whale was indeed hit them, more so rise up from underneath. Whales do not flip boats, they were never in any form of danger, sure it certainly is confronting, but not dangerous and certainly not life threatening. Sincerely, an Australian with basic marine knowledge
A close encounter of a beautiful kind, and I thought the young lady's commentary made it even better viewing. She was overawed and overjoyed all at once, and who wouldn't be, only feet away from such gigantic, gentle creatures? Sadly, such a magnificent video as this is bound to attract dumb criticism from those lower life-forms among us, "Trollus Obnoxious", a human sub-species of minor importance. Thank you for sharing this wonderful moment! :)
Thanks Graham, i figured it was far away from here -- southeastern Connecticut, USA. Our water is not quite so clear. But it is my dream to kayak with whales and your video inspires me to pursue my dream!
Awesome thing about whales is that even if they capsize you, you're not really in any danger. You wouldn't get eaten and would just have an amazing story to tell...like so
That is definitely the experience of a lifetime. Graham - you should have at least calmed your daughter down, and reassured her that the whales weren't 'attacking' - she was scared out of her mind... I know if I was with MY daughter, she'd probably be hanging out of the canoe trying to pet the whale :) I've raised my daughter to respect nature, and she already wants to be a Veterinarian. She's 11. :D (proud Dad smile)
Whales are really, really big and a canoe can be very small and fragile in comparison. I think everyone in that video did very well holding it together.
I can understand how unnerving it must have been but if anything similar ever happens again, keep in mind that whales are extremely intelligent, gentle animals. They had no intention of doing anything that would harm you and the intelligence to make sure they didn't.
I have an unusual fear of whales. I don't ever want to be near them, yet since seeing this I can imagine myself being there, enjoying it and feeling wonder at their presence. Then I think what if I fell in and the whale touched me and now I'm all twitchy and it's hard to breathe.
You were such a scardy cat. Oh lord! You should have been enjoying it but instead you were freaking out the whole time! Enjoy this....not many people get a chance like that ever.
The Whale be trolling! Whale: I'm gonna capsize ya, I'm gonna capsize ya, not! I'm just gonna do a barrel roll under your little canoe a few times. Lol!
i can't wait to see this turned into a horror movie trailer. suspenseful music, scary sounding narrator, but end the exact same way...."They're coming this way!"
The girl was young, excited and scared get over it. That was so cool would love to have been there especially when the whale pokes his head up and stares at them. Just frickin wild:)
I think the girl might be in her early teens. And we all swear alot, even if its bleeped in videos in the states, it happens alot in real life and many countries (like mine) allow swearing on television (this is Aussies also). The swearing kinda shows that its not any "acting" in the video. And for a young girl to be in a tiny boat with two of natures biggest animals around her it sure can be scary she can use any word she likes in my book. It is truly an amazing video, experience of a lifetime.
I would love an oppertunity to be so close to one of these majestic creatures. I wouldn't be too worried about them being a danger to your boat, they're not stupid, they just like to see how close they can get sometimes. Some whales like watching people as much as people like watching whales. I live on an island and we have minke whales come into the bay a lot and sometimes they follow people's boats. Never heard of anyone being capsized by one, even when they're playing with dinghies.
