Wharram Percy is one of the famous examples of a deserted medieval village, although what you can see now are only ruins and the layout of the community, it revealed what life was like during the middle ages. The medieval village has a complex settlement history and was believed to have been inhabited in the 9th or the 10th century. It was actively settled between 12th and 14th centuries when the Percy’s family lived in the village. Unfortunately, by early 14th century the Percy family had some misfortune that worsened the unsettling situation of the village including the occurrence of the Black Death. As a result, in the 16th century it was almost deserted, due to abandonment and forced evictions.
To date you can see the ruin of the improvement farm, medieval church of St Martin and the fishpond. You can also see the layouts of the grassed-over foundations of the two manor houses and peasant houses. Due to its complex history, it attracted several archaeological research projects. In the 1950s an excavation took place and discovered nearly 700 skeletons in the church and the churchyard that provided valuable information on how they lived during the middle age.
