If you call this sweeping under the rug, where every single western media outlet has been having a human right boner in the last month, despite this being over 5 years ago, then I don't know what you call highlighted. If you can name a single country without blood, corruption and evil in their recent past then il concede. Everything is swept under the rug when it's about a white western nation or if those white western nations can't afford to say anything e.g china.
That speech! His PR team were seriously trolling him 🤣 How can you say today I feel gay? It's about as meaningful as saying today I feel like a f@ckin chocolate muffin grrr
he is about 40 years behind from the "trend" =P (the one where Sweeds would call in gay, and since that was seen as a sickness back then, they would not be coming in to work =)
his PR team were pulling their hair out on the sidelines, as he threw away his 20min pre written speech and Just rambled incoherently, for well over an hour, holding the gathered press, as Hostages, un able to ask a question, or any kind of follow up
Thank you Russell you splendid diamond of a human. I just love how you can draw out laughter with your uplifting and moral humour out of what would otherwise be painful. We so enjoy your hour on Sky
truly enjoyed your analysis of "football" in Qatar; what a uniquely strange choice for a sport that celebrates LIFE! And I guess David Beckham's acceptance of the huge payment is proof that one can never have TOO MUCH money! So glad you are following in the footsteps of the Royal Joker who points out that the King has no clothes!
My mum has been following football and didn't know much about Qatar. I told her "Hey, mum, you know there are 62 countries where I could be killed, imprisoned, and/or tortured. My brother shouted from the other room: "Which one do you want to try first?!" I love my family. :D
@Muneeb Iqbal Sure foreigners can probably keep it in their pants when they go abroad, but what about people who're born gay in Qatar? Their choices are to deny who they are or be persecuted by the law, which could be prison time or execution (if a Muslim). This is where it becomes more of a human rights issue. Whilst I am for respecting people's culture, but it pretty much ends at human rights. Heck, it doesn't even mean they have to take on the gay culture you see in the West, as that might not work for them, because say, if a country's culture avoids any display of sexuality, then obviously that would remain true for homosexuals. A lot of countries in the West have sexuality on display (as in, like public displays of affection, suggestively clothed people etc. not having sex all over the place) it's only fair gay people can do the same.
David Beckham has "seen a real football culture" in Qatar. He also really likes their food culture as he loves a good taco. The guy knows he's not in Mexico, right?
@@snelgrave101 I love when they sent him to Brazil for the world cup in 2014, and dinglebrains was speaking "Spanish" to Brazilians...why can't Anglophones ever understand that they speak Portuguese in Brazil?!

Oh get real, this is what we do in the WORLD, we don’t care about anything but our own fulfilment and satisfaction. Clean up our own Country which has enough crap going on when it comes to abuses. People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones is the saying. We are so keen on looking at others we forget to clean our own mess. Everyone get off your high horse. Everyone very respectful of the atrocities going on in Palestine against the innocent humans and the illegal occupiers are free to bomb and maim whoever they want whenever they want. Now that is reprehensible. But why so quiet on that the biggest human rights abuses happening daily yet you jump on Qatar? What don’t you know about that, or was there not a bandwagon you could have conveniently jumped on for that?
@@MA-ts9qt Erm, just because human rights abuses are going on in other parts of the world, that does not make said abuses ok in Qatar, or anywhere else. Stop being a partisan idiot for a second, and try engaging your brain.
@@TCt83067695 In Russia, you are technically allowed to be queer - you just cant flaunt it - and even that did have a backlash... Football has, within this centry, tried to give us an idea that they are doing everything they can to be inclusive - until now... If you happened to be gay and in any of these teams, you could be jailed - just by existing... In the end, the message is - be any kind of queer and you souldnt do elite sports, unless you wanna be jailed or die...
I understand when people who genuinely don’t have the ability to say no are going. But Neville and Beckham have SO. MUCH. They don’t need to go. They could not go and make a massive impact. Greed is f*ing disgusting.
Neville rightly believes that the World Cup should be held in the Middle East, Africa and every region on the planet. It isn't the European and North America Cup - it is the World Cup and Qatar/Arabian Gulf is part of the World.
As frustrating as it is... I can't totally blame people for looking the other way, it's a mentality that has been encouraged throughout the UK for as long as I can remember. Not just around football, around anything. Coporate entities and public figures with PR teams have gotten very good at performative gestures of morality. But then a money making opportunity comes up and their supposed values dry up. So it's little wonder that's something that's somewhat ingrained itself in people's psyches. There's also this element of... I don't think it's possible to be an ethical consumer in a capitalist society. Nearly everything we touch, be it a piece of technology or even some of the food on our tables, either has a bodycount or a big negative environmental impact, often both. We don't often see this because we've outsourced so much to poorer nations, but over time more and more people have tried to bring our attention to it. But the more we learn, the more we find ourselves unable to make a difference, as even the social media devices we use to communicate our anger are part of this. So I think that a willingness to sweep things under the rug becomes almost a mental survival technique, as truly processing all the evil of the world that is wrought by our consumption is enough to drive one past despair. And once you overlook one or two things, it gets easier and easier to overlook others. I don't say this to excuse it. I'm not making an argument in favour of willful ignorance. From my experience (futilely) arguing with work colleagues and trying to change minds, I think we need to understand the above when we engage with people about this. If we understand WHY they're averse to facing the reality, maybe it'll be easier to make an argument that they're sympathetic to.
More than 6% of Qatar's LNG export goes to the UK (the whole of Europes sums up to more than 23%). I never heard anyone say they will boycott Qatar's natural gas
It is very very unfair that a footballer earns millions for playing a game while many in the UK earn peanuts working shit jobs for minimum wage. The world needs to change and reward the hard workers and pay low wages to those at the top having a party who just point fingers and tell people what to do.
I've said that before people who enjoy their jobs (hobbies) playing football should get minimum wage and people who hate their jobs(probably 90% of the population) should get tonnes of cash but unfortunately it can't be like that. But it's the public who pay the footballers wages and they are the ones who make them FILTHY rich. But what pisses me of when these footballers moan got to play too many games and got to retire at 30 plus. I would have loved to have retired at 30 with millions in the bank.
@@pabo-qv3nx That's really stupid. What about the people who enjoy being nurses, doctors ,carers, teachers and police officers by your logic because they enjoy their job despite being essential pillars of the community, They don't deserve a higher wage because they enjoy what they do. I agree footballers don't deserve such high wages but the reason they get such high wages is because people give them so much money in the first place sponsorships. Give them so much money. The fans give them so much money The market has determined that they're worth that much, so that's what they get paid. We might disagree but unless we're going to bring on communism, there's nothing we can do about the high wages that footballers get other than boycott football and their sponsors.
@@pinkdiamond1847 Doctors nowadays are in it for the money. And that's 5 careers you mentioned but I'm on about people working in factories warehouses etc etc they DEFINITELY dont enjoy those jobs. People just work to make ends meet especially nowadays.
it's a shame they couldn't divide those 150mill between all the workers. Taking advantage of disadvantaged people just because they accept it is not moral at all. As someone that was in Qatar for a year I can tell you a few stories but it is a golden cage. One should also mention that those workers had absolutely nor rights, their passports confiscated and couldn't live the country unless allowed by their employers.
Funny how no one talks about england shirts which sell for £130 but Thai workers who work crazy hours to make them get paid £1 an hour. QAtar May have started with £1 an hour but improved wages and made sure workers have spacious flats to live in. And if you don’t know and believe hypocrite media I suggest you don’t listen to the media and learn facts
There's a great documentary series about FIFA on Netflix detailing the history of graft. It's not surprising they gave Qatar the WC. The teams should have refused to go. It's a terrible place to have a football cup. The weather, restrictions and above all the dreadful human rights abuse.
to be fair - the players are not at fault here - everyone higher then that are - football unions etc. for supporting this back step in development within the culture
Always enjoy Russel's comedy. That being said, the underlying racism and hypocrisy of the BBC when it comes to football is just appalling. FIFA has been a corrupt organization for a long time, yet it's only brought up when a "unworthy" country hosts a big tournament. All the negative press, the incorrect reporting on the fan village ( why not show the match viewing outdoor lounges, restaurants, food buffet), the noise about alcohol ban when it clearly exists across many other stadiums, it all wreaks of the underlying idea that African/Asian countries shouldn't be "allowed" to host a big event. It feels strange to be writing a serious comment on a comedy video, but really, if England is that serious about it's morality, then why not put your money where your mouth is and boycott the tournament. ..... Hypocrites.

Its infuriating when people just want to 'enjoy the game' and are getting annoyed by the obsession with the 'politics' so I guess they're saying they're happy to sweep everything wrong under the rug and never look under the rug again as long as they can watch men kick a ball around
Well. So long as Britain didn't invade a country claiming it had wmd's, sweep it under the carpet, get rich to the tune of over 50 billion and be responsible for a million lives lost as a result of it, they should take the moral high ground and tell others how to run their country. Weird thing is Britain are still, now, making billions of pounds deals with Qataris profiting from them but so long as they didn't invade Iraq, they should pursue the moral high ground. Luckily they didn't do a dozen other murderous things since then. Britain. Morally superior by being immoral and sweeping it under the carpet but nobody dare better question that. Yay to murder and theft.
Why the recent obsession? It’s been known about for almost 12 years and yet people stayed silent. And no doubt when the tournament is over people will go back to staying silent.
@@RedMarvelX Its been known about for years, except it clearly hasn't. @@silverbrumbyfan Well you prove my point. When the WC is over, the media you consume will find something else for you to get angry/passionate about and all the talk about Qatari human rights(not like many people watching have actually been to Qatar or spoken to locals to hear their perspective) will be long forgotten. China and Russia recent hosting events are good examples.

I think people have seriously gotten so confused. Qatar is not saying "Don't be gay". They're saying that you don't need to publicise the fact that you're gay. I saw an interview where a news reporter was interviewing a Qatari representative and he said that they welcome everyone, even people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. What they don't accept and encourage is the publicising of it. He said that it is frowned upon even when heterosexual couples are public about their relation by doing PDA. So NO, Qatar is not saying "Don't be gay", they're saying you don't need to publicise being gay.
Massive respect for David Beckham! For a man not known for his intelligence, yet he's figured out the hypocrisy and is not following like a lamb. There is hope! 👏❤
The team probably stood the wrong way as political slogan were banned throughout the tournament. Even fans of Jungkook of BTS got told to not put their banner up, when they wanted to support him on his individual world debut ..
I've lived here for a decade, and Beckham is lying through his teeth, there is absolutely no football culture here. What little there is could honestly be called polar opposite to football culture anywhere else in the world. There's no football hooliganism what so ever. Basically no funny chants. None of the absolute ruckus you'd find in the west. That being said, a lot of lies are being told that really aren't necessary with all the things that have already been brought up. One guy wrote an article saying its apparently a sweltering 37°... Its the middle of winter. Look on the weather app. It's a complete lie. I could bring up more, but I don't want this to drag on too much.
I've watched cricket tennis hockey kabaddi and Koko Football is something I've never liked or understood. It's rough and at the same time very dramatic game.

For today's match between Qatar and Senegal, the wankers with the broadcast rights in my country hired someone who had worked in a youth academy in Qatar. Obviously he spouted some crappy propaganda, but when they wanted to cut back from that to the second half, the other expert on the couch "hijacked" the outro and slotted in some harsh criticism of the human rights situation. He wasn't eloquent (he's a ex-footballer and he was rushing and improvising), but I loved that he couldn't let that turd burger stand without comment.

I would trust all the foreign vloggers right there at Qatar sharing their honest experiences about Free healthcare and Free transport for football fans and about the good food and great accommodation (with video evidence off-course) rather then trusting the bogus media propaganda or Russell Howard.
FIFA: "Lets focus on the football guys, not politics or religion." Also FIFA: "You cannot wear this armband, you must remove 'love' from your jersey, your fans can not drink beer in the stadiums, because Qatar's religion and our politics."
Also in France you can’t drink beer or alcohol and May other European counties. But no one will mention it coz it ain’t a Muslim country. @@cloud6501 Any country where players would face legal consequences for putting the word love in the jersey should never be allowed to host any international event.
@@KK-fi6ms having to remove the word love from the jerseys was due to FIFA, due to "Love’ written on the inside collar as part of a collaboration with the music festival Tomorrowland, who are not an official Fifa World Cup sponsor." The west is basically upset that their western liberal values cant be imposed on qatar. This is nothing short of Cultural imperialism. Certain things which are acceptable in the west are not socially acceptable in other parts of the world. They are entitled to their own culture and traditions. Who are we to impose our liberal values onto them as though ever changing liberal values are the the correct ones. Migrant workers rights is an issue, one that I have personally boycotted the gulf countries myself for. But let's not act like western media and governments actually give a shit about that.
