This video hit home as a Dad of 4 kids under 11 and my Wife and I both working full time. I've struggled for years with the balance of running my small tank with the daily tasks of life. For a brief period the tank became a source of resentment from the wife due to all the time I spent doing testing, water changes and maintenance. Then it shifted to me doing everything at 11pm or later when everyone went to bed, which worked but at the same time left me drained for work. As the kids have gotten older they love trying to help and learn how to do things, but now we have sports, school functions, homework, weekends helping the wife in her classroom and trying to buy a bigger house...I've accepted that for now a tank under 50 gallons is probably as big as I can manage for now. Thank you for being open and sharing this journey with us!! Now I need to scrape the coraline off 3 sides of my tank...when I have free time...in the next month or so!

dear Ryan, no body , and i mean no body is disappointed or angry at you (or at the BRS team for that matter) for taking this project down!. a lot of things happened in the last few years , covid, work, family. life happened, and you had to take some very hard decisions with your family being your top priority. i , as well as many others here, have nothing but respect for your honesty and for the incredible effort you put in this project in particular and for this hobby in general. keep your head high, stay healthy (body and mind) and enjoy what you do. once you start your new next project just give us a shout, and we'll all tune in. hope you read this, amir, israel

This has literally been my issue the last 3 years. I know what I want to do with my tanks but can’t find the time to accomplish it. I’ve ended up just settling on what’s easy fish and softies. With that being said I know my family appreciates the route I’ve taken. You guys are doing what’s realistic and sharing that an important side of the hobby no one shares.

My dream tank ended up inside a skip outside my house, along with my fishkeeping hopes and dreams lol. That was 20 years ago and I've not kept a single fish since. Now I'm ready to give it another go but with a bigger tank, better equipment and the gift of hindsight. It's not marine/saltwater but I've still learnt a lot from the videos on this channel.

Really admire your honesty Ryan, you won't regret simplifying your home tank. I myself set up my dream 220g mixed reef tank over 8 years ago and have spent countless hours almost every evening maintaining it. While it looks incredible and it's my pride and joy, it's come at the cost of spending time with both my wife and my three children. Fortunately my children are all fish tank mad and I love them helping me with any maintenance that needs doing. I can't wait for the day to come when I can take them all diving on an actual reef. All the best with the house move.

Your humble, and honourable, “failure” is not in any way a failure. It is a wonderful experience. It’s a PhD in realizing what you want- what you really want and are capable of handling. You have given ALL of us, your fellow reefers an experience we could only dream of, and then realize that what we have, is great. Thank you so much for your experience, that prevented us from making the same mistakes. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. And also- I feel your pain, and feel your hurt and disappointment.

Such a heartfelt outpouring. We can all relate to the initial excitement and many have experienced the disappointment when things didn't go as we had planned. After nearly 40 years keeping marine aquariums, I've certainly had my fair share. The hobby of keeping fish and coral is a commitment that many of us underestimate and your video is an excellent illustration of that point. I’m sure wherever you decide to take your hobby in the future it will be the correct choice.

Stingrays hands down! Best saltwater pet very personable. My 3 year old daughter loves to run along side the tank and play with our stingrays. Handfeeding is a whole new experience. My daughter hand feeds them too. She loves it and her interest into ocean and aquatic life grows. She is barely interested in my reef tank or planted aquariums. She loves the colors but her attention span is like 30 secs. The stingrays she loves to hang out with. They are very active and fun to watch. I have a huge school of green chrome and damsels which they do eat occasionally. Lots of movement and low Maintenance if you have a oversized filtration. The cost to feed them is alot more but well worth it. After watching your videos i think your kids will go from tugging your pants to wanting to watch and engage with the fish and tank with you. At least that has been my experience. They will beg to feed them and will laugh and giggle when they do backflips. Plus youe audience will love to see this new side.

Ryan keep your thoughts positive. You run your business right and the youtube channel right! You are doing right by your family!! You tell the truth and that is rare! We have just came back to the reef tank world. We moved across the country and sold everything and lost so much because fish tanks and all that go with it do not sell well. We then lost over 37,000 $$ because I made a bad decision by moving for a different job! That was 2017 and now we are back In West TN. We are back in the Reef tank life and have a 120 gallon. We thank you for the helpful information and hope to keep the mistakes at a minimum as you are trying to do. We are faithful customers and will stay that way and hope BRS is around for a long time. Your honesty has saved us $$ and that is a big deal!! We need so much and small steps is the way to go for financial reasons and the reef tanks health!!. Positive thoughts and hopefully all will be great again. Best of luck in the new home!!!

This video really helps put me at ease because I got into the idea of reef keeping way at the start of covid, doing research upon research upon research. I've always had many different pets throughout the years, always rescues and always cared for to the best of my ability but I've always had a connection to the sea. The only thing that has kept me of taking the plunge, is balancing. My life is turbulent as all hell right now and I'd do a disservice to not only the tank, but also the hobby, other hobbyists and myself by getting a tank set up during a time where it isn't feasible to manage the tank post-setup. I think you're displaying a level of responsibility and realism that's very important for many new people like myself to see. It peels back the rose tinted curtain we all too often see on youtube channels. Apologies for the long comment but I really appreciate this video and honesty.

Man, you totally made me cry and sparked a nice discussion between me and my husband. We took my hobby and turned it into the family business and finding that work/life/hobby balance has been a struggle ever since. In fact, I don't get to do my thing at home anymore as its seen as "work". So my hubby and I have rekindled our mutual interest in having a reef tank as a way to have a non work hobby and something other than work or kids to talk about. We're just in the learning and planning phase and that's how I found your videos. I do videos on YT for my business too and I totally get the "show us your x at home" for us it's sewing machines and quilts. And my main machine and projects are at our shop. Thanks for being vulnerable and letting me know in not the only one with this struggle. Keep looking forward!

I have been wanting to see a video like this for years. Thank you Ryan! I have been running a reef tank since 1999. That doesn't make me special. It just means that I have made some hard decisions. I have had things go wrong, way wrong! I have suffered loss, do it again, and again. I have made new reefing friends, and watch them leave the hobby. It can be the best experience one day, and the worst the next. This is all part of this awesome hobby. Doing life with a reef tank definitely has its unique hurdles to overcome. Seeing the passion in your face about it, and hearing you talk, puts me back in a time when I was going through the same thing. But you are documenting it for all to see. I think this might be one of your most useful videos yet. And I'm not trying to take away from all the useful tests, and trials you all have done. They are very valuable as well! But I feel that this is just what is needed, for the aquarist that is having second thoughts. Or one that is discouraged, because their tank is going a different direction than what they had intended. It 's just part of living with a tank. Good luck, and I look forward to seeing where you, and yours end up!

Ryan this video honestly hits home for me. I went through a similar scenario after having our kids. I had been keeping tanks for over 20 years and had an online livestock business. Once you see that the hobby starts cutting in on time with your family and becomes more of a chore than a labor of love it’s time to reset. I closed the business downsized my tanks. Fast forward 5 years later. We have a fish only that I can enjoy and teach my kids about the joy of the hobby without taking time away from them. It’s all give and take as you find that balance. When they get to those teen years and ditch old dad for cool stuff, I’m gonna go for that forever tank but until then I’m content with where things are with my journey in this hobby. Best wishes and can’t wait to see that beast set up in your office !!!

Build that dream tank in the new house: build it, cycle it, stock it - and then pay someone else to maintain it. You are a successful businessman. You should have something you love, and you should support your brand/image by having a fantastic tank in your home. But home is where you should relax and enjoy - no shame in paying someone else to do the grunt work.

I could easily afford to have someone maintain my aquarium but for me that kind of defeats the point of having an aquarium. It's the feeling of personal achievement and mastery and success that gives me pleasure in this hobby. This is completely different from just looking at a reef aquarium.

@@simonlockley-evans3925 I totally understand where you are coming from. You are truly fortunate to enjoy a lifestyle where you can afford to outsource maintenance, but have the spare time to do it yourself. But Ryan is clearly stating that he does not have the spare time. So his only option, if he wants a dream tank at home, is to outsource some of the maintenance…

I work in devops, which has a heavy focus on rapid small automation improvements. Automate automate automate. Automate testing. Automate water changes. We have the tools but I feel like the hobby has only scratched the surface. Once you have that programmatic mindset to automate everything you realize how much you can eliminate. Granted, automation is costly. It takes a lot of equipment. Which will cost you. But you can definitely reduce your tank maintenance down to refilling reagents and scraping the glass. But also I understand not having time. It’s a choice.

I've been doing salt water tanks for the past 35 years so needless to say - I'm still a novice. I'm still learning. I recently discovered that approximately 120 gallons is my magic tank. Tanks under 75 gallons and tanks larger than 150 gallons are both too much work. I love nano tanks but fluctuations are too immediate and unforgiving. I also understand now that I absolutely need enough water to properly house a tang gang for algae control. While I would be more agreeable to going larger than 120, bigger tanks mean larger water changes, larger and more expensive equipment and with the rising cost of corals and fish - a small fortune to stock.

The reality is that yes family comes first in all matters but also you have become very successful business man and now you can afford a better house, in a better neighborhood with a better park and much better streets to play with the kids perhaps maybe your own street in your own compound. Well done boss , this is the beauty of this wonderful country, that we can dream and make it real and choose to move to live to better places. Good work congratulations in the new house/land to build hunting. Perhaps a new tank at office will be better and leave the house to enjoy family and the fruits of your hard labor so when you arrive from work all you have to do is do what the kids ask you to do and of course there is always that honey do lists but you will have plenty of time to accomplish because no tanks at home is a plus when you work surrounded by fish tanks stuff and plenty of full beautiful tanks

Well brother I feel your pain. I lost everything when Hurricane Laura passed through Louisiana. I had all my supplies in upstairs closet and a tree hit my house and in one night I lost everything. I really gave up and this is the first video I have watched about reefing since that night.

Thank you for sharing this video. I've watched hundreds of hours of saltwater videos as I get back into a hobby I'm passionate about but none of them have really left an impact. To see the time and effort you put into this tank and had it not go the way you want is undoubtably difficult. That being said it somehow makes me charge forward into this hobby with more vigor knowing that even the best of the best faulter some times. I'm in progress on setting up a 350g and the lessons, tips, knowledge, and most importantly failures are worth their weight in gold. It was difficult watching this video seeing the authentic struggle of the tank that you poured so much effort into being taken out. I hope you find some solace in the knowledge that you are inspiring a whole new generation of tanks that will be successful because of you. I'm honestly terrified as I build my dream tank but fueled by the help your provide and security that all tanks aren't the perfection we see on Instagram. I can't wait to see whatever you have to offer going forward because I can be certain it will be honest and real. All the best. Pat

Thank you Ryan for sharing so much about yourself in this video. Tank struggles are VERY real and it’s encouraging to know even the experts have them. I’m really looking forward to seeing what you do with the tank!

I love this video, it really spoke to me! It's not about quiting or giving up, it's prioritizing, managing and optimizing our expectations. Passions make life rich, but it shouldn't feel like a burden. Acknowledging that and making changes to lessen the burden doesn't make you less it makes you more.

I think a Fowler at home is probably a good call. An 8 foot long tank that you can have fish that you wouldn't keep in a reef and will give you the freedom to go a little wild and learn about some other fish then what you have been normally able to keep

Thanks for getting real - every reefer’s priority ideally: 1) health 2) family 3) work 4) tank.

My dude, do what you want at your home. We have the whole brs..... office? Full of tanks that we can talk about and enjoy on the brs channel. You have helped all of us greatly. I myself just started my first salt tank 8 months ago, and idk where id be without the brs channel and you. So do what you wish to do. Dont make vids on it. Its yours. Make videos on the other tanks xD

I'm not disappointed, I appreciate you guys exploring aspects I don't have the resources to explore. Which includes the privilege of learning from your mistakes. Life happens while you're making plans. It's why you're moving after setting up a dream tank; and why I had to stop building my fish room and am back into a 70 gallon (family came first). Watching your cycling failure was also hugely beneficial for me personally. My first tank went through a similar level of failure a few months before. Where I started with dry/sterile everything and could not get it stable. Only it was my first marine tank. Bacterial concentrations were one of a dozen ideas, without the experience to validate it. I continually second guessed myself, and eventually took it down to cure and recycle the rock in a bin. Then you guys found a PCR vendor for tank microbiology, and it clicked. I no longer felt like a failure and was excited to try again. In that time, we had our first child; so no fish room for me. But, my second attempt is up and running. Looking much more normal. All because of watching your mistakes. So while you're disappointed. I feel more encouraged and enthusiastic; as I wasn't alone in that similar struggle.

Thanks so much for sharing this ... Helps big time with similar struggles. I think the purpose of the tank has been served as it has pointed you in the right direction. Nothing is permanent and everything happens for a purpose. Ive learnt that what we often ignore that obstacles are sometimes meant to tell us what NOT to do .... And if things are not "flowing" and going according to your plan then these are signs that it's not meant to be. The difficulties are sometimes telling you not to go there. Of course the challenge is to work out what's meant to be pushed through or what's mean to be a signpost to stop and go the other way. I think your decision is the right one. I salute your honesty and integrity cos now we too can relate ... And we too have "permission/example" of learning to let go. God bless you and your family

Do your tank for you. Not the public. If you have the time that is great but not a priority. That was a big tank and when you think how old the ocean is, it can take so many years for a big tank to mature other than forcing changes with all the resources at hand. It is a great learning experience but costly as well. You will find a happy medium down the road. Don't be discouraged....

It’s the joy - if that isn’t present, the passion drains away. My takeaway from this is that ppl need to understand where a Reef tank fits in their lives, and realize that that fit changes as life changes. If one is fighting too hard to stay enthusiastic, something somewhere isn’t fitting right. What you’ve expressed here is, IMO, probably more important than most videos many of your viewers will see. As someone who has waited most of a year for a 360 to be built and delivered, only to find it deficient, there were times when I really wondered if the Universe was trying to tell me something. But right now, I can’t bear the thought of leaving the hobby, so like you, I’m persevering. Thank you for this. 👍🏻👍🏻

My comment might get lost but I experienced almost exactly this, from the work to the kids to the new tank. I built my dream tank and my kids asking me to come play and me not even hearing it being so focused in. After 1 month of running I decided to sell it and downsize it to a 120g that I now love and balances with my time. Family first!

I really leave comments on Insta or RU-vid. I found your channel prior to COVID and watched the 52 weeks of reefing and most of the other series on your channel. I was one of those guys buying 50% more. My first reef tank is a Red Sea 750XXL. Your videos, your guys on the support line helped me immensely. A few times I felt like tossing it all in the trash. I will always be a novice at this of that I am convinced but I have learned a ton along the way. This hobby is not easy and if it was not for you and this channel and your company I would never have gotten to the place I am at now. I am very proud of my tank KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB, it's really a cool accomplishment when it comes together and there is no doubt failure is part of this hobby.

I think you hit it man. The 5-10 year tank has to be the one that fits your life, and that won't always be the same thing. We all hit spots with life or the tank when we we feel like a tear down would be best. You have to be brave and make that change for yourself and your pets before something crashes.
