I commented on one of the youtube shorts which compared k-beauty &styles from different countries in which I stated that I never saw any k-drma or idols without pale/fair skin which definitely restricts diversity and pure talents too which don't come in limelight due to such toxicity.Lots of support gained from different PPL and response but in end my comment is reported and removed 😂.Social media is helping to spread these toxic topics so we have to use social media as a defensive tool too. These kinds of topics needs to be addressed .
People here commenting on morals and ethics on Korean standard however shouting for chest and back damn the irony on your words for ethics double standards
Oh because Japan and Korea are same country. Like this kinda generalization in the West is so normalized it’s crazy. Like imaging a video talking about “UK’s beauty standard is going too far” and a random girl comment “oh yes, my Spanish friend is…”. bruh.
Does anyone know why it's SO superficial? Like in my country it's against the law to put photos to job applications and efforts in legislation, although imperfect, for diversity and avoiding discrimination is a consideration. In Korea it seems the total opposite and then ofc plastic surgery.... I've always wondered if they can tell how plastic they look to each other and expectations on their children and so on. Even in entertainment it's like to nth level and then this falseness about how beautiful a celebrity is as if it's a skill honed through hard work. I know it's on a spectrum but feels like a Black Mirror world: keep social power where it is and no social upward mobility.
Same mine is 53 and I think now I'm chubby but I don't look tho Becoz I have height I look slim and fit after seeing this short I feel like I'm fat now 😢😂
As a girl who is 5'8 (172-173cm) If I was 40kg I would literally die. EDIT: This comment has gotten a lot of attention over the past few weeks so I want to point out some things. Some people got upset with me, thinking that I am skinnyshaming Korean people for having generally lower BMI than other countries average. I never said anything that would imply that. I also want to clarify that even though 40kg is classified as underweight for the vast majority of taller people, in some instances it can be perfectly healthy. It all depends on your height, body structure, and genetics. Many of you are using idols as an example of "normal" weight for females in Korea. I would like to remind you that many idols are forced to diet and starve themselves in order to meet unrealistic weight goals. And one final thing. I don't know where some of you got the idea that I am glorifying the "fat acceptance" movement, but I am absolutely not. Unhealthy weight goes both ways. There is such a thing as weighing too much, as opposed to too little! (Again, it varies based on height, genetics, etc) Having too high BMI is just as bad as having too low BMI. Both can and do cause health issues!!
I like that the last one mentioned body fat % bc I think people are forgetting that Korean women are generally very short and with little muscle mass so for them, 40-50kg is/can be healthy, and 20-26% is easily maintainable for most people (I myself stay around 22 if regularly working out, but then I get closer to 25 if I've been too busy to workout regularly for a while). But at 5'8, 40kg would be about 35lbs underweight 😂
I think this kind of comment isn’t really helpful bc yes we are short, but 40-50 kg is still underweight for most east Asian people. South Korean women tend to be taller than japanese women (who are typically 5’0-5’3) so it’s actually insane that this weight is normalised as the goal.
@@mimiko7965 40kg may be underweight for many but 50kg is still healthy up until 5'4, which most east Asian women are below... So again, point remains that healthy weight is largely dependent on height so you can't compare your weight to someone much shorter.
@@kitsterangel yeah my bad I worded my comment wrong. Like you say if you’re between 44-50 it’s still healthy for a lotta east Asian women. The problem is I’ve seen soooo much of the media and friends and family idealise below 45kg and feeling horrible for being 50 or over-as if those aren’t within the recommended healthy weight range-because the beauty standards like anywhere else idealise totally unrealistic standards. Like we all need to be 5’6 and 42kg? No thanks. Under 45 is underweight for most people, even East Asian women (44 is the lowest healthy weight limit for 5’0, 45 for 5’1, 47 for average height of East Asian women 5’2). I wanna be clear that the issue is absolutely not being under or overweight like we all have our own journeys and all of our bodies are beautiful. The real issue is that the beauty standards are constantly pressuring women to either be at the lowest limit or underweight through shame and scare tactics.
As a girl with height of 173cm I get dizzy when i go to even 56-57 as I loose weight easily n unintentionally like if I am working longer shifts. Normally i weigh around 61- 62 n still people tell me that I am really slim. So its weird n unhealthy obsession if they expect every girl to weight 50 kg regardless of height its not healthy!
@Nanita S yes thats the point. So assuming that everyone should fit into that 40-50 range is absurd. You can be 60 kg n still look toned if u eat healthy n workout.
They're not joking, I'm 5'7 around 120 lbs, size 0 in the U.S, when I was travel to Korea and Japan, even staff in beauty/hair salon recommend me to lose weight 😂
Male, 5'7.5"/173cm and 130lb/59kg. I can't lose weight without sacrificing fitness. I can see a woman of my height going down to about 120lb/54.5kg since I actually used to weigh this much. She would need to be intentional (i.e. avoiding sports/muscle building, strict diet) or else she'd either gain weight (muscle or fat) or run into health problems (malnutrition, dehydration).
yeah it’s kinda how they don’t take height into account, 120 at 5’7 is a few pounds from underweight. ik female idols talk abt how their companies tell them they need to be in the 40s even when they’re tall
It true. I'm 153cm tall and weigh 50kg and people say I'm chubby. There was a girl I knew that was around the same height as me and weighed 39kg. Guys loved her and girls envied her.
I'm like 155cm and I weigh 60kg. I was worried about my weight so I spoke with my doctor and asked her about it. She said that weight isn't actually as specific to your health as it seems. She said I'm perfectly healthy (not overweight in any way) and that muscles tend to weight way more than it seems so having a higher weight that it's usually seen, not always indicates that you're overweight. If you're worried about your body, ask a professional and don't go making weird diets to fit an standard weight. I don't even understand how can someone have a standard weight when all people is different. Having an standard weight of 40-50kg is just so stupid because it doesn't even have into consideration your height. BMI is also not indicative because when you build muscle (as it happened to me) It doesn't separate muscle from mass, so you might have a BMI overweight but you could be perfectly healthy. Just ask a professional and don't let standard affect your health specially with hard diets. Take care of yourself❤. It's fine if you want to be slimmer but do it while being healthy and demanding professional help, don't hurt yourself in the process
For a country that’s concerned with its low fertility rates it’s seem bizarre that they would have a beauty standard that would more than likely stop periods in a significant number of women and potentially make their chances pregnant in the future harder. What’s crazier is that so many women and young girls are trying to conform to this standard and inadvertently pressuring others to do the same instead of pushing back.
@@jonathankimkful you’re mad because what she said is true and she wasn’t even body shaming anyone too. also why bring the US into this topic when that country isn’t relevant here? being too skinny and too fat are both unhealthy, two wrongs don’t make a right. neither the US or SK are perfect cause they’re among the top countries with the most toxic beauty standards in the world that absolutely need to vanish.
I immediately thought that. Idk how we are all held to the same metrics based off height alone. Im 5'9 also, 170 pounds I looked like all skin and bones, u could see my collar bone and I hated it there. I like my body more around 200 pounds wearing a size 12/14 😂
Reading the comments, I feel like people forget that Korean women are really short for the most part ? Being 40kg when your height is 1m50 isn't unhealthy at all. Bones and muscles have a weight too, if you got less of them, you will be lighter. (Of course I'm talking about 40kg being the natural weight, if you weight 40kg only cause you starved yourself but your natural weight is 50kg or more, the 40kg is unhealthy)
Really??? I’m 165 too and 48kg is what I normally weight, like I’ve never been able to weight more than 52kg, I think I would start loosing my period if I went maybe below like 42 but that has never happened either. (I’m 23 if that matters)
@@xiaojunslefteyebrow I suppose it depends where you come from and what your approach is. If your body is just built to be a little heavier then the stress of trying to be 48kg is going to cause period loss, whereas if you’ve always been slim naturally then it wouldn’t effect it as much.
@@hol8642yeah i think koreans tend to have a lot less muscle mass and as a whole or on the lighter side. They also tend to be smaller, its one of the reasons people talk about ‘asian’ sizes so much, their clothes are all downsized
wild thing is that my mum (post soviet child) was saying the same thing, extract 110 from your height, as a 170cm i was okay with that... but imagine being shorter and you HAVE TO -110 to be like what 5 kg 😹 wiiillld
I’m 5’5.5 and my weight is 49kg. I’m underweight and to think that these beautiful women have to go on diets to look like a hanger is ridiculous to me 💀
@@jakd2962 there is a Kdrama called strong women do bong soon and in that, one of the female victim was quite taller than me and she was 49 kg, then again these stats were mentioned in that drama (which could be false) and that really surprised me, because i would literally be dead if i was below 50 KG.
88-110 lbs. THATS INSANE! That’s only really acceptable if you’re 5’2”-5’4” in height. Even then, that’s pushing it. I can’t believe a country’s beauty standards are borderline pushing anorexia and people really believe and follow it.
I’m 5’2 nowhere near that. But genes also play a factor in how they look including me,I’m pretty sure that’s underweight for most ppl I could be wrong tho
I’m extremely skinny. And I’d say I’m pretty average height. Probably around that weight. I look like I’ve lived through years of famine. So I guess if I were a Korean woman I’d be popular.
that's scary how much pressure there is be a certain body. 50 kg is so little! and you have to be a tall woman too. That's scary how some of the celebrities like Korean singers, they eat like an apple, a bowl of porridge, and a sweet potato, a box of soy milk, and that's it. The pressure is so real! That is tough... I'm glad I'm in the USA even though my family is from Korea...
Average height is like 165 or under in Korea, 40 something to 50 something kg would be slightly underweight or just stepping on the average line, especially for their small ass bone frame so it's hard to compare. You are tall asf tbh, that weight range will definitely ended you
It's depend on ethnicity I think. It's average parameters for asians, so they stay healthy. It's unusual for white/black people, so they might have complications. My Korean sister is 161/48 and she always has periods
They might have regular menstruation, but cannot conceive in long run, they practically become sterile and even if they do, they face consequences during gestation period and can't lactate after the birth of the baby. They also suffer from loss of bone density. Extreme underweight and overweight can be both dangerous.
@@tatjana7008 it has nothing to do with ethnicity, I am Indian (hope you know it being a part of Asia), we do have some genes which have significantly better effect in our growth and totally different from the west. I have been body shamed for looking too skinny (i have never been able to be over 48kg and i am 160cm) and i am still struggling to gain some weight but seeing this makes me realize the world will always find something to criticize about and we as a community should stop trying to make everyone happy
This is so true. I live in SK for a little over a year. I was 5'6" at 125lbs. People I worked with would always tell me I would look better if I lost weight. I never understood why being underweight was considered healthy. When it comes to womens health and fertility BMI/% body fat is very important. A lot of the younger women especially seemed underweight.
I'd be considered fat in Korea. I'm naturally curvy...my body can't be super slim. I had anorexia and got very tiny and it wasn't healthy for my body type. But I recognize every person has their own unique body type and we are all beautiful. Thin, big etc. Ladies you're beautiful ❤
i’m 16, asian and i only weigh 44kgs at most and i swear to not go any lower bec it’s indeed unhealthy, it makes me dizzy at times, and my stamina isn’t that good. i’m only ab 5’4ish though and yeah it is considered underweight, i cannot imagine myself a year ago feeling even more insecure ab how i look despite this fact that i desperately do extreme exercises in order to achieve that slim look (i have a lower muscle mass) ;-; i still feel this way sometimes

I’m 175cm and 56kg so in Korea I’m technically big. I would be unhealthy if I weighed less. In the US I’m considered skinny but in Korea, I struggle to buy clothes in the “normal” sizes. There’s also a thing called “free size” here, where they only make one size of a piece of clothing and everyone is supposed to fit in it. If you don’t, too bad, it’s not made for you. It’s difficult
I'm 5"5' and I used to be 210lbs (95 kg) and over two years lost about 80 lbs. I physically can NOT get smaller than 130lbs (58 kg) because my bones start to hurt, I get dizzy, just painful overall.
@Halo I am Asian,5'6 I don't think it's even bone density. Their weight goal is just absurd. I don't and can't see myself going below 50kg. My weight goal is 55kg but below that I know my health will just go down.
I’m like 5’9 and lived in korea for a while. I was around 135-145 lbs at that time… I genuinely didnt fit into a single piece of clothing at any clothing store there. Not one. I felt enormous there. I was so excited to come back to the states lol
I’m 164 cm and dealing with an eating disorder. my lowest weight was 53 kg and I didn’t get my period for two months and wasn’t regular until I reached 59 kg. We noticed She has My Husband and Muscle build when She was Born. She looked like she was allready hitting the Gym. 😮. Imagine she weighs 40/50. They will think We are starving the child
The last girls argument doesn’t sound off, just slightly underweight if the person has bigger bones/more muscles. 173-110 or 105 = 163 or 168. 168 is in the perfect BMI for a length like this, we follow the same in Sweden and Scandinavia. It’s probably only people from US who are widely shocked by this.
true, my parents used to say to me that i'm too thin, they just preferred to have some weight more.. but my doctor said that i am normal. i usually used BMI to calculate if i'm underweight too.
My korean sister is 161 and 48 kg, she eats all what she wants. It's just majority of people have such genetic, so this plus little effort will keep them skinny.
Me and my whole family is Korean. My mom has a height of around 170-ish, and weighed i believe around 45kg in her high school-university. She's told me she has fainted in class wayy too often and now, even after gaining weight, has health problems. Don't give in to the beauty standards here, especially when the ones enforcing them probably don't fit into this standard themselves.
East Asians also face health issues associated with obesity much more often than other ethnicities, so that’s one motivation to stay slender, but this is taking it to the extreme. It’s no longer about health but appearance.
I like when I am chubby and I weighs 64 but I don’t feel bad about it and I don’t care what others say about it cause it doesn’t matter ,if you are okay with it and as long as you are comfortable about it
It seems that foreigners have a contrasting understanding of Korean lookism. The appearance obsession in Korea is not just focused on striving for perfection. rather, there exists social pressure where being overweight may be perceived as an indication of not taking good care of oneself.
Weight targets or ranges are ridiculous, especially when they don't take into consideration height! 🤦♀️ I don't know if there is any adult women whose healthy weight would be 40-45 kg, but if there are, they would need to be really small! ..and probably not very fit...
@@shinzoki3803No, actually, it doesn't take height into consideration. This is the ideal weight regardless. When I was living there I had a friend who was on the verge of anorexia and her boyfriend told her she needed to lose more weight to get to that number range... She was 5'8/5'9.

People really listing their heights and complaining they’d die 🤦♂️ Bruh the average female height in Koreanis 5’3. You’re 5’8 - 5’10 clearly you’re not even close to being the same height. 40-50kg at 5’3 is still skinny but the extra 5 to 7 inches of height difference will clearly mean you can’t get to the same weight 🤦♂️
the sad thing you aren‘t considering is that people don‘t view it this way though. a lot of very tall kpop stars for example also fall into an extremely unhealthy weight range for their height and are considered beautiful because of it, by a lot of people. i have seen interviews where even quite tall girls have said they feel like they need to fit into this very narrow window of acceptable weight.
@@Mienarrr I’m Korean, and in real life, people don’t want to be THAT skinny. When we talk about 40s to 50s being a nice weight range, we mean it for people in the 155cm - 165cm range. If someone’s over 170cm and want to weigh 40kg, they are probably anorexic. (Or they don’t really mean it)
@@GDxYS @Andrea By 40s to 50s, I meant forty something to fifty something. And besides, I don't think its that big of a health problem to be a few kilos underweight (just like how being a few kilos overweight isnt a big deal either). For instance, the healthy weight range for a 165cm woman would be 53kg - 62kg. If someone was 165cm and 64kg, would you be saying "that's unrealistic and unhealthy" for being two kilos overweight?
The problem here is that even Korean women taller than 5' 3" are told by even their parents to lose weight to meet that "ideal" weight range. I personally knew one in her 30s told to lose weight when she herself is legit 5' 7" or taller
Yo, I'm 160 cm tall and at one point I only weighed 37kgs and it was awful. My body was weak, my muscles weren't carrying me, the lack of muscles caused me severe back pain because there was nothing to support my spine, my hair was falling out and I would be dizzy or faint very easily. I worked on gaining some weight and I think I'm about 42kgs now and all I mentioned above has improvement tremendously. Health over aesthetics, people.
I think it's fine to weight 45 or 50 kg if you're 150 to 163 cm and are a teenager or in your early 20ies. I weight 47 kg with 163cm in my early twenties. It's possible without starving or dieting. Of course genetics play a role too. I'm quiet narrow build. Narrow shoulders, hips, tighs, calves, small breasts and so on, regardless of my weight. I weight a lot more now but still am small, because of my small build. I guess it works for most Korean women because they're small build too.
As a half korean who's going there this summer, this is quite stressful. I weigh 60kg which is not overweight at all for my height, but the amount of times I've heard my mom and korean relatives telling me I should lose weight because of how chubby I am is astronomical..
That’s a BMI of 16.9 and less than 18.5 is considered underweight. In order to be anorexic, you need to have BMI less than 18.5 so she could be. But if she is eating well and just doesn’t gain weight, then no she is not.
Based on korean standard... Your weight should be... Ht(in cm) - 100-10 For example... 160cm Ht - 100 -10 That means person with 160cm height should weigh 50kg
wow that would be 65 for me since i‘m 175cm. very interesting. its funny because i have always been flucuating a lot with my weight and i personally have never felt more happy with my body shape and general look than when i am around 70-75kg for my weight. really just shows how different people want different things for themselves. i think it should be okay to want to be any weight, but you should make sure you stay healthy and have a healthy bmi and fat percentage for your height and age.
@@Mienarrr exactly... I think those standards are literally killing people especially teenage girls. As long as we are with healthy BMI, there's nothing to be worried. I'm 173 sm and I went from 50 kg to 85 kg during past 6 years (my poor poor skin), and I should admit that 65-70 kgs was the best weight both in terms of aesthetics and health. I'm 78 kg now tho, and still it's not that bad when you are not flabby but muscular.
I'm 169cm tall and naturally very skinny with a fast metabolism, I lose weight very easily and I struggle to put it back on. When I get sick I lose weight quickly and I feel very thin and unhealthy, and I often end up around 40kg at that time. For me, I feel my happiest and healthiest at 50kg. Knowing how horrible I feel when I'm that light, I'm absolutely horrified that 50 is considered chubby and 40 is considered ideal.
I was 46kg once, and I'm a guy, 162cm. I have a small frame. It's important to consider smaller bone structure, which is common in many non-white people, especially those who didn't grow up on a conventional western diet. A girl with a tiny frame might look ideal at 162cm/42kg, while a stocky girl with big bones might struggle to get under 50kg. People should be respectful of different body types and remember that a "healthy" or sustainable weight depends on the person and how they are built.
Thanks for sharing ❤❤ ppl in here need to know that weight goal is ALSO VALID for smaller bone frame ppl ❤❤ they are mostly misunderstood as wanting to be light 😂😂
I’m roughly 5’6 and I can’t imagine being 40 kilograms, that’s about 89 pounds. That’s insane! I have a very small frame as I am only a bit over 100 pounds (about 47 kilograms) but 40 kilograms sounds small even for me!
for the people in the comments, i think that weight is pretty normal. You would probably die if u were taller than 165 cm and that weight, but if you are short like 150-60 it would be fine. I am 40 kg and 154 cm which is normal bmi.
40 kg at your height is still an underweight BMI (16.8) even for people of Asian descent. If you were 44 kg (18.5) that would put you in a healthy range. As long as your weight isn't affecting your health, there's nothing wrong with it.
when i was 117 just a few years back i thought i looked soooo "good" now looking at my old pictures i legit looked sickly. not a single pound of meat on me. just skin & bones. now that i'm 145-150 i look HEALTHY and like a WOMAN. sometimes i wish i was tinier but i just need to remember i'm 27. i'm not supposed to be the same weight i was when i was 18!! comparing photos of me from 17-18 when i was 23-24 is what made me go from 145-117 back then. now i'm back to that 145 weight. i was my biggest competition tbh. those old young photos of me being soooo tiny messed with my confidence so much. i even developed disordered eating :/ i'm rly glad that the lens of striving to look that tiny has now been broken.
i'm like 65-70kgs on 173cm with around 15% of body fat and i'm often made fun of how skinny i am. i think that it really depends on your body structure, muscle mass percentage, bone density and other factors, that are often overlooked. people (and especially women) shouldn't rely on the number on the scale so much, 'cause it may be misleading and causing lack of confidence or problems with mental health. also, i really don't understand men who are like 'i'm not dating women who are over 50kgs'.
I need to live in Korea, iv always been Max 40kg, and was heavily body shamed all my life cuz i don't fit my country s beauty standards. They prefer larger ladies and more voluptuous.
I'm 158cm 51kg so bmi20.4 and I’m considered chubby in Japan. Because everything over 50kg is considered chubby. People always comment on how much prettier I’d be if I was skinnier because the heaviest weight for me to be considered attractive is 45kg which would be bmi18. So literally healthy weight=chubby, underweight=average attractive, severely underweight=ideal And the skinnier and less you weigh the more “perfect” you are. Like, girls weighing 35kg and stuff is normal. You see girls with bmi of 12 and they don’t have an eating disorder or anything because that’s just the norm. America has an obesity problem but Japan, Korea, China and these countries have an equally bad beauty standards problem.
You’re 175 most Korean women are around 160cm clearly being a taller person requires more calories and a higher weight. 50kg (110lbs) is not that bad tbh for someone that’s 160. 45 on the other hand is a bit much even for 5’3.
Same… I’m almost 70kg… and I’m 176cm y’all will lost me at 100 pounds… and I live a pretty healthy lifestyle as well I live in central London so I have to walk basically everywhere… it’s just different body types
I‘m 175cm as well. I remember my lowest weight in my teens when I was already 170cm was around 50kg and I was very unhealthily obsessed with being thin at that time. It wasn‘t good for my body or my mental health. Nowadays i‘m much happier and think I look way better weighing much more. 👍
@@Mienarrr honestly I don’t believe in the “perfect body” it’s funny how I’m the 1990’s being skinny was the thing.. And later KimK “happened “ I’m not going to go in detail and all the girls were dying for a hourglass body… And now being skinny is back in again… it’s just stupid in my opinion… just live ur best life.. skinny of thiccc just be healthy!!
Im 162 cm (5'4") and the SMALLEST Ive been was 52 kg (115 lbs) and I was a wafe. My collar bone, sternum, ribs, and hip bones were all very visible. Theres no way (with my build) I could have realistically gotten down to 40 kg.
i'm about 45kg but i'm also 149cm so. don't worry about numbers or looks, worry about what you're putting in your body. some people are just bigger or smaller at their healthiest and you should always listen to your body instead of a beauty standard!
