What’s the Right Katana Length for You?

Blade length is generally decided by how tall you are. If you can look at this chart provided by my favorite Budo goods shop Tozando, you can easily find the right length for you. However, there are two points of caution from my own experience.
1.Arm length must also be considered
Based on this chart, I bought my first katana, but I eventually realized that my arms are longer than an average man my height. Now I use a katana that is much longer.
2.Depends on the ryuha style
Some ryuha styles like the one I train in, for example, teach their students to use the longest katana possible. In this case, we disregard our height and how long our arms are, but simply train to be able to control longer katana properly. So my recommendation would be to first buy a katana based on this chart, and then as you continue training you can challenge different lengths.

The right length is the one you barely manage to pull. That way you can always improve. It grows with your skill. I am 180cm tall and have a katana with 3 Shaku blade length.
