Sharehouses are underrated! I've seen a lot of foreign students move to Japan and get an apartment, but in a few months end up hating it because it's either too expensive or it's too small or not in a convenient neighborhood. Sharehouses allow you to get started living in Japan right away, save money, and let you get a feel for things so when you are ready to move into an apartment, you have a better idea of what to expect.
@Deep_wolf

I had an AirBnb for a month...no other people. No initial fees. Completly furnished. Easy to book from abroad. Since it was just extended holidays I compared it with the available hotels. Was much cheaper than living in a hotel for this month. Much more expensive than this though. I think I paid 800$ for a month for 2 person. But this was some years ago. Since then I believe Japan cracked down on AirBnB apartments. Don't know if this is still possible.
@AndyLifeInVideo
@AndyLifeInVideo Год назад
@@blablup1214 yeah Japan really cracked down on Airbnbs. You can still get them, but they're not as many and they're more expensive generally. I wouldn't consider them unless you're only in Japan for a few weeks, and even then I'd shop around.

I feel like no one talks about that

I think the easiest way is to start as English teacher, I work for Kids Duo International and it has pros and cons but the best pro is they find apartment for you (not the most amazing but for the start is good) pay your visa and they help you with settling down like send someone to help you open bank account and fill the forms you need for the residence permit (most of it is in Japanese so the translator was very helpful I dealt with everything in few hours which was super fast)

Shared rooms in America are really not too common. A couple of people can share an apartment which is almost the same thing. In my younger years, I would have minded it less than now. The two big problems are privacy and theft. So if you get good people, you're set. But in American there's a misconception of the "shared" part actually means. Perhaps that's not a problem in Japan. 😊

I could not imagine sharing a kitchen and shower with 10 other people, but in all honesty, the actual space in your share house isn't that bad. In fact, the rent is really cheap. I pay $425 for a room relatively the same size, but I share facilities with much fewer people. And for living in Arizona, it can be very expensive running air conditioning for 8 months a year, and yet the homeowner doesn't make us pay more for utilities during those months, so I think it's a blessing :)

I have no plans on sharing a house at all, but if living alone really turns out to be the hassle that you say, I guess I can share a house until I can settle in another place all for myself. With that said, I would feel very lucky if I ended up sharing a house with someone willing to show me around and maybe teach me more about the language, cuz I still kinda suck at it.

This is actually a really good idea!! I mean, shared house vs nice apartment... to me the apartment obviously wins (ossumung it's not a 10 sq ft box in downtown Tokyo, lol). However, if you'te busy trying to establish yourself (like if you're a college student or off-the-boat foreigner), then you can use your time in the shared house to establish residency, and then use that residency to bolster your credibility for other things (credit rating, job interviews, apartment screening, etc)

It's so interesting finding out what things cost in different places. In Canada's major cities a bedroom in shared accommodations runs 1000-1700. I know someone renting a balcony for 750 in Vancouver. It's normal and necessary even for working professionals to have many roommates.

I'm still good friends with some of the people I met there and can't wait to visit them now that Japan is open to tourists again. I always loved all the towns along the Chuo Line, besides Kichijoji, there's Nakano, Koenji, Tachikawa among my favorite places. Cost of living is also hell of a lot cheaper than central Tokyo (I define "central" as anywhere within the Yamanote line lol). I used to go to Yokota AFB on business trips a lot, and would stay in Tachikawa and totally fell in love with that city. I told myself if I ever lived around Tokyo, i'd pick Tachikawa to live. In my college dorm, I had my own room and only shared a bathroom with two others. When I lived in an apartment with friends, the most I had was 4 other roommates. And I thought that was lot, honestly. These days, I have my own 2bdr apartment for under 1000 USD. That said, I can certainly see the appeal of the share house, especially with the flexibility of the contract, and of course, someone coming to clean the house!
