What 1958 HS Students Felt Their Futures Would Be Like

I have been a collector of old films like this one since I was a kid. I used clips from many old films in my television series on the 1960s and in my feature documentary, Sputnik Mania, which presented what happened in America in 1958, the year after the Russians launched Sputnik. It is fascinating to hear what High school students who were from the early part of the 60s generation, early baby boomers, felt their future was going to be like. To me, many of them sound like their parents.

Wage rates have risen with inflation in jobs with marketable skills. The unskilled labor market has stagnated due to the flood of illegal immigration and people who have no drive to get a marketable skill. @@sammymillerman High school graduates are generally 17-18, so the class of 1958 would have been born in 1958-18=1940 to 1958-17=1941. 2020-1940=80 so I would say that's right on the money. I think it would definitely be interesting to have a reunion of all 10 students, find out what they did with their lives, and show them the video and get their reactions. But the truth is, most likely at least 3 would no longer be alive, and there is some chance that one of them died young.

Strange that I came across this video and your comment. I'm 45 and was recently recalling memories of adults laughing when I answered their questions seriously and thoughtfully. It was embarrassing and kept me from speaking my mind. Now I understand it caught them off guard and their reaction was involuntary. So now, as a grown man, I don't ever belittle someone for having less experience in life or assuming their youth is a detriment. Everyone should be heard and respected until they become disrespectful of others.

I don't think this one video with the intention of obtaining the thoughts of teenagers will give us insight into how adults back then treated teenagers with an opinion. After all, the 1950's and 60's had rampant sexism and you don't really see that in this video. You can find videos of people today having these kinds of discussions together. @austinjrb
@austinjrb 4 года назад
This is a weak argument because truthfully, Community College is VERY affordable for those that need the help. BOG Fee Waivers and Financial Aid end up putting students at every Community College I've been to in the positive... we all have actually gained more money than it costs each semester. This was the case at Antelope Valley College, Santa Monica College, and Compton College. All of us. I don't know a single student that complained about losing money because even the ones that came out of pocket (like me) got the money from the school. Furthermore, it's not uncommon at all for people to finish their undergraduate programs at real Universities with 0 debt because there are so many programs for people from low-income areas or if they're a first generation college student. AND if you couple this with doing your first 2 years at Community College, then you really have to put forth an effort to rack up some debt. At this point the whole "college is too expensive" thing is almost a cliche, tired argument that's been addressed for those that actually need to/want to attend. If we're talking undergraduate degrees then it's a good hypothetical but falls apart when put against reality.
@Kaboomboo
@Kaboomboo 3 года назад
Community college is pretty cheap though. Like a thousand a semester if you're full time. The only problem with community college is that a lot of them don't offer 4 year degrees, they just cap off at 2 years. That's why people just opt to go to university.
@Aerojet01

The reason college/university fees are high is because the education system is designed for the rich and wealthy. Whereas, the poor is expected to do the manual labour jobs. I am a member of this very group. I would have graduated from high school in 1958, except for the fact that I quit school after grade 10 so I can work on the farm. This went well for a few years, but I had an intense interest in electronics that eventually led me away from the farm. I first did a home study course in radio and TV repair, then worked for a while in that trade as an apprentice and picking up more skill in that field. Wanted to do higher level work, so I went back (part time) to pick up a few high school courses to allow me to enter into an electronics technology course. Got real lucky and was hired by Honeywell in 1965 to work as a mainframe computer technician installing and maintaining their equipment. That led to a 25 year career in the mainframe computer field. I moved on from the technician role to programming and software development in my new role in customer support. The mainframe business died off in the 1990s and when I was laid off from that, worked for a dozen years as an independent computer consultant until I retired. My education continued all these years with a mix of self learning, on-the-job training, and taking night classes. This worked for me but probably is not a good plan for today's generation. @OldDogNewTrick
@OldDogNewTrick 6 лет назад
Start early. Get a part time job and get some experience in the work world. At the same time, start to look at future career options and what it takes to get there. You can do it right here. Just type in "machine learning" on the search bar above, and you will see a range of selections giving additional information in that field. If that is not your thing try "brain surgery" or "cardiac care" or whatever it is in life that interests you. Then prepare yourself by getting the education needed to succeed in your chosen field. Have a 'Plan B' in case your first choice does not work out. As we go down the road of life we sometimes change directions voluntarily or because of outside factors. Be ready and adaptive to change. And finally, good luck. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Today, since we record ourselves all the time, there's no longer a feeling of wow this is being recorded so I want to sound good. That girl was completely right in saying that knowledge is never waisted. But when I say that it doesn’t mean necessarily formal knowledge. But everything you learn, can’t be taken away from you. College is a great space to learn because you have great teachers who will make you question the way you see things now, and also a lot of other students with whom you can share your views and learn from theirs as well. But it surely isn’t necessary if you feel like that isn’t your path. Just keep studying whatever it is, keep learning. It will be handy at some point.
@mikitz

Generally speaking, knowledge is never wasted. This is, unless you go to a school where they shove an ideology down your throat while paying for it as student loans for years while flipping burgers since your diploma doesn't help you get any real job. In other words, you should prioritize what you need to learn over what you want to study.

By 2016, Republicans’ ratings of colleges and universities were mixed (43% positive, 45% negative). Today, for the first time on a question asked since 2010, a majority (58%) of Republicans say colleges and universities are having a negative effect on the way things are going in the country, while 36% say they have a positive effect." Now also it does not say anywhere in the article provided why they had such a polarizing switch on view of college recently. My take on the reasoning behind that switch is that Republicans maybe are feeling that the cost of college for what you get is too high and at the end it still does not guarantee you a job or guarantee an increase in standard of living. I believe a combination of media becoming echo chambers for their ideology, as well as the media and other common social outlets used in dividing the parties, and the cost of college increasing is what makes these Republicans have a change in view. But anyways, keep generalizing all Republicans go back to your echo chambers. The fact that it seems you have either barely read the source you have provided is unsettling. I am not even a Republican and I felt compelled to say something.

WOW! This is the first time I have ever gotten to see what people were really like back then. You could never get the correct sense from any of the movies that were made about that time or watching any movies from that time. A very big thank you to David for posting this.

I had no idea what I was watching but I got through the whole thing and I loved the thoughtful discussion! And also am a bit uneasy that the conversation hasn’t changed much in present day.

It has.. just less screaming!thoughtful discussion although it is disgustingly backwards. It is old but we derive the positives of dialogue. The whole world can see the problem the US has with dialogue. It's an experimental nation. Successful in many ways but and an expected failure in the idea multiculturalism. Fail 1000 years ago, a failure now.

Why do people sound different back then? They all sound so well spoken...like young adults. Compared to today, people sound so dumbed down.
@Zethoro
@Zethoro 5 лет назад
Erika Heinen Well, keep in mind as well that all of these students were considered “gifted” at the time, or at the very least they were all above average. One of the adults states in the video that everyone here had an IQ of at least 120, and while IQ isn’t everything, I think it’s safe to say that these students probably aren’t reflective of the average at the time. Etiquette was different at the time, however, so who knows?

@@Zethoro Yeah it's hard to say. I also hear kind of a change in accent if that makes sense?? The young people back then sound different and I recognize how I've heard a lot of old people speak (cause obviously they're from that time.) Our accent today feels more blunt or something. On another note, a lot of accents like the new york, jersey, bostonian, belong to the older generations and rare to find a young person to have. Today we have a normal american accent, the watered down valley girl, and some new street and urban accents.
