I remember I was in college when this came out, living in Columbia Missouri, and in the spring time this song would play on the what was then the modern country radio station and once when it played the DJ announced it and said “here we have a new song by a group called The Mavericks, and I have a feeling it’s going to be the hot song of the summer“. And it was!!!
Just love it. Pulls at the heart. Simple song ,simple chord structure but played beautifully, and I dare anyone not to get stiffy induced listening to a 12 string Rick.....
I was 5 years old when I heard this and I fell in love with country music... my dad would listen to this on TV back in the days.. wish they could make music like this now days..
Raul Malo is cuban and started his musical career in a new wave band called The Tomboys and then The Basics. When he put The Mavericks together still in Miami they did have a following, I saw them at the Island Club on Washington Ave and 7th street in SoBe but obviously their style wasn't 305. They moved to Nashville and the rest is history!
Jesus. I haven't heard this for years. I absolutely loved this performance when I saw it in '94. And the other track they did on Jools. And what a Rickenbacker I didn't know the significance of Rikkies back then. And I loved the way the drummer played. God this brings back memories.
SO glad I ran across this! Loved Mavericks~esp. Raul's voice. 1st time I heard them was on the radio coming home from a beach trip and I literally had to pull off the side of road to hear the DJ announce name of the band so I could follow them!
I don't like country music in general. Since the age of 13 my band has and always will be AC/DC. Obviously rock is my genre of choice with Classical music being second(odd I know). That said, this is a damned great song. I stumbled into hearing it during the time I worked at Texas Roadhouse years ago. I still don't like country but like I said, this is definitely an exception.
