When I was a contractor, I never liked people staring at me working. I still don't. I find it distracting and sometimes dangerous. Here you are working in the cold, on camera, figuring out on the fly solutions for one challenge after another to accomplish huge undertakings, How anyone can sit in the warmth of their home and criticize that is a new low. Keep enjoying what you are doing and let the critics remain tormented souls

Unless it's a comment or a tip on construction, like a different or maybe better way to do something, I too have a hard time understanding negative comments and thumbs down. Folks come here of their own free will. Nobody forces this channel on you. If you don't like it, just don't watch it.

A hunt isn't just going out n dropping an animal.. They who wish to be armchair critics need to get off of their butts n slog thru the woods to " work" a hunt n then see the effort needed to process all of that harvest n then how to store/ preserve that harvest, then how to prepare it for consumption.. Yup.. Not like going to Mikie D's( the golden arches) n pickin' up a burger! Thanks for sharing! ATB from sunny Wintergarden,Florida!

I'm 63 and began watching in the last 6 months after being terminated from a hospital. Worked 43 years in the manufacturing business as blue collar, then supervisor, then in the Quality field at the same place. Began working at the hospital after that then was let go due to communicating stats that the management didn't want to hear. Your videos have caused me to eliminate stress in my life, so I want to thank you for allowing me to improve my health. Your lifestyle is so attractive but is not possible for me, so I watch all that I can and am able. You are an encouragement!

I really appreciate your showing us what life was like just a year ago. You have come so far! Feels good to acknowledge your progress in these projects. For me, it's a real motivator when I look at my photos and see how far my husband and I have come in setting up our cabin and getting the landscape around it cleared to make things nicer, more comfortable and more manageable. That's why I got really excited to see the work back then like getting the roof on, getting the woodstove working on that stone portion of your floor, getting a wood floor put in instead of a dirt floor, getting moss stuffed in between the logs, getting a door put on to keep the cold out. So many more things which followed like the cold box, the kitchen sink and shelves, the table, the outdoor kitchen, all the things which you have done to make your place a home. And now the sauna which I think is part of making things nice for the wife. That little review from a year ago was the best part , but then again there are many favorite parts in each of your videos. What a difference a year makes! I agree with Moira, well done!

As a finn I must congratulate you for building the sauna! After a hard day, I cannot image a better place than sauna. Especially in winter when it is cold, dark and wet. You warm the sauna to 80 C. It is dark and you put the lantern outside the window. You sit on the bench and throw some water on the sauna stove. And the löyly (in finnish) the heat encloses you. It is totally quiet, you hear the sound fire. The perfect moment! After a while you go outside and jump to the water or the snow drift. And then same again.

When people comment about hunting being cruel, it brings back childhood stories handed down to me. My great great grandparents and their children would have starved without hunting for meat. Hunting techniques have been passed down along with the rifles they used. You are so right about all the various ways deer meet their end. I'd rather know they died swiftly to feed someone than slow by freezing, by a predator, or a wound. The sauna is sure coming along and I am enjoying the beautiful video footage. Thank you and stay warm. Carolyn Sanner

Hi Shawn::That buffalo steak, wow. I still have the taste in my mouth. The glow in your cabin is palpable & warms my place as well. Hunting, From my teens to my mid 40's I hunted frequently & always tried to respect the game & my methods. Then 3 things happened together. My wife through out my harvest from the freezer because we did not utilize it in time. I watched a large buck glide over a large dead fall. Such grace! I had this feeling of being an outsider because for me the hunt was not essential. When on canoe trips I return all fish too big to be consumed at the next meal & will limit my fishing to avoid causing waste. For you, however, the hunt is not excessive; but rather a part of your existence & I enjoy following your process. The continuous changing of clothes is essential to out door life at this time of the year. Thanks Brian 78

Hi Shawn, I learn something from you every time a watch one of your videos. My dad would hunt every winter in the Pocono Mountains. He would leave early pre-dawn and return when it was almost dark - his hands and face were always "red" from the cold. Of course he dressed for the cold. He caught mostly rabbits and deer. After it was butchered we would eat the meat which was very good. This goes back many years. I loved how you described hunting which I had never thought about before.

Hi Shawn, Thank you for sharing another great video with us. I must admit that I do not have time to watch all your inputs. It does not really matter as winter is also on its way here in Finland and soon indoors activities will take place (watching videos included). Love the quiet moments when you only film nature with a calm music in a background, splendid. Thank you again, take care and best regards from Finland, Pascal

I gotta say that the year ago flashbacks are really cool, and show how much can be accomplished when you just keep at it and "get er done." Nuff Said.

I enjoy your videos so much. Your lifestyle is the kind I always longed for as a Northern WI girl. At afe 68, it may not be a good time for that kind of undertaking! It's what I saw at many of the homes of my rugged Norwegian and Swiss family farmers and hunters when I was a young girl. When my great grandparents bought their farm jyst south of Ashland WI, it looked like the most Godforsaken place on earth. But all my heartstrings are still attached to that homestead. I love to watch all your efforts. And I adore Callie!

Brilliant video Shawn! I love being there with you. The beauty of your cabin is amazing...the warm golden light...the cozy atmosphere, and that fireplace is something else. I appreciate you talking about hunting and wildlife never getting to old age. I didn't realize that before you told us. It really made me feel better about the beautiful animal giving up it's life to the hunter. Thanks Cate

I started watching this feeling sad that you may be lonely, wondering if you miss your wife, friends, and any type of social life. I actual was getting stressed over how much work you have ahead of you on the bathhouse. I worry about you getting hurt hunting alone. This video theme seemed to wander like the roof on the kitchen. But you’ve taught me patience and as usual your personality and philosophy wins the day. The flashback was amazing what you’ve constructed in such a short time. Like so many I’m a fan who unwinds with your story at the end of a long week. I struggle with my simple channel and you make it look so easy. You were so awkwardly gracious and embarrassingly appreciative of your gifts...very sincere. Don’t let anyone rain on your dreams. Be safe Shawn and please continue to share your dreams.

Fabulously edited video. Loved all parts but the going on a hunt part was exciting. Thank you. It felt as if I was right there. We appriciate the effort you put into the filming, editing and talking on camera. Your silent moments are just as powerful as when you talk and explain. In this video the falling snow and the music you mixed with it was beautiful. Thank you very much. We are looking forward to seeing your next download. Take care. Kindest regards from the UK.

I'm really enjoying hearing your methodology for tracking and hunting. In my youth I've only ever done still hunting. The tracking seems really exciting but also seems to take a lot of patience. Almost like a game of chess! Please keep showing your hunting/fishing expeditions.

My family always hunted, rabbit, different birds, deer, fishing and such. We ALWAYS hunted to harvest not for trophys. To me a trophy hunt is such a waste. Great video!
@robertmartin8184
@robertmartin8184 6 лет назад
A “trophy” means one puts value on the game they hunt.....why would anyone not want to value the magnificence of a game animal? I have shot many small deer and elk, with my homemade bow and arrows, all were “trophies” to me. When I have shot huge trophy bucks, I ate them just the same, just as all my hunting comrades do, there is never any “waste” just because the buck was a monster. I can never understand how people that don’t understand hunters or hunting get the weird idea that being selective, refusing to shoot small deer, holding out for a big buck, a trophy buck, and as a result going without year after year, not killing lesser animals, then one year after years of trying, finally bagging the buck of your dreams, and then honoring that animal, putting great personal value on it and considering it your true trophy.....why someone thinks that’s a waste is beyond me and only shows a total lack of understanding.

Katherine McChesney , ive been out hunting and found deer carcasses with the head missing or the horns cut out. That is wrong. That is the trophy hunting that people talk about. Its fine to go after a 12 point buck, but dont just go out so you can have a head on a wall and not do anything with the meat. Donate it to a shelter, eat it, give it to a family member but dont just hack off the antlers and leave the rest to rot.

As a longtime bow hunter/ bow fisher, the concept of " trophy" was the harvest... Period! You brought home what you bagged, cut, gut , n prepared it either for storeage or dinner... Tanned the hides, used the antlers/ bones for field tools n that is how you the " hunter/ fisher" honor the animal. The elders that taught me this had n still do this today! That is how n why they are called " hunter/ gatherers", n not " plinkers", or " weekend warriors".. Respect for the land, all who swim , fly, n walk the land, this is the way I was raised n how I raised up my kids! Thanks for sharing, n ATB from sunny Wintergarden,Florida!

Beast Man: what you describe is not trophy hunting in any way shape or form. What you describe is poaching which has absolutely nothing to do with so called trophy hunting. Wasting a game animal is illegal in all 50 states and most civilized nations. Selective hunting for an outstanding animal is legal and often encouraged in all 50 states. Lots of states actually have antler restrictions that prohibit shooting small bucks and have areas where only mature three or four point bucks may be harvested. Also lots of states restrict hunting to bucks only and does may not be harvested. A trophy is always and only in the eye of the hunter, whether the animal is large or small. Illegal activity that you describe is the antithesis of the true selective hunter (what some negatively refer to as a trophy hunter), who sacrifices year after year in pursuit of an animal that has matured, lived out it’s life, passed on it’s genes, and now only awaits a slow lingering death of starvation from loosing it’s teeth or a painful death of being ripped apart and eaten alive by a predator. A selective hunter that lets the young deer live their lives, lets them grow up to be deer and run free and live long, and choses by self restraint to harvest a buck when the buck has lived long, passed on his genes, and lived his life, and only then chooses to harvest such an animal, and then uses the meat and further honors the animal by placing the horns in a place of honor for the rest of that hunters life....he honors that animal. He doesn’t judge another’s trophy, he knows the forked horn rack on the shed can be as great a trophy and memory as the massive old buck as the selective hunter grew into what he is as well and was young once and used to harvest immature animals, and was proud of his accomplishments and even a doe was a trophy to him, and still is if required to go that way. The ignorance of people who try to chastise a selective hunter because he puts greater honor and is more selective, and may very seldom even harvest an animal is bizarre. Trying to blame the illegal activity of some meth head who wants to sell some horns for drugs and poaches animals at night with spot lights and cuts off their heads is a ridiculous comparison to a selective honorable hunter.

Robert Martin , you missed my point. When people think "trophy hunter" they think of people that only hunt for a head on a wall or bragging rights. You are right, there are real trophy hunters that do what you describe. But most people that dont hunt perceive trophy hunters as the person that goes out only looking for a head to hang. Maybe i didnt make that clear.
