Seen the Grateful Dead numerous times at alpine valley. They used to fly out in helicopters after the shows. Made many comments about how bad it would be for one to crash and then that happened.

I was lucky enough to see him three times in the '80s.amazing isn't even close to describe his concerts.he had walked away from drugs& alcohol and I believe was reaching his peak when we lost him.i cried like a child lost in the woods when they announced his death.thanks for such a wonderful reaction dear❤😊❤😊❤😊
3 times for me too, hyperbole fails to capture his brilliance. Have you heard of Danny Gatton? He was an American virtuoso guitarist who combined blues, rockabilly, jazz, and country to create a musical style he called "redneck jazz". (Wikipedia) Saw him shortly before his death and he is/was one of the very few in SRV's league. At one point during his set, he started playing amazing slide guitar with a freshly opened beer bottle then continued playing with a rag while wiping the neck. Check him out, many videos on YT. I never got to see him live himself, but I was blessed to see him play for David Bowie 1 time.... He was incredible.... Certainly one of the greatest guitar players of all time!
I totally agree with your comments. I seen him 1 month before his death, in Ann Arbor, MI. About 20 ft from the stage. I probably mourned over his death, like people did over the death of Elvis.! Just couldn't believe that he was gone.
Welcome to the world of SRV! The concert at the El Mocambo is considered one of the best live performances of any genre ever recorded. He was channeling at the height of his powers and killed it. Truly stunning. With that said, you can't go wrong with any of his live performances. RIP Stevie. You are missed.
I saw him many times in Austin back in the 80’s . This video is 1983 I have a reel to reel bootleg of SRV from 1976 at Antones nightclub when he was playing with the Cobras He was already a master of his craft at a young age.
Saw SRV live at Jones Beach in NY shortly before he died...it was amazing. Many people in the audience brought binoculars so they could watch his hands as he played. Never saw anything like that before or since. He was one of a kind.
Saw him at south street seaport in Manhattan a couple of times in the '80s from about fifteen feet away. Don't know how/why I missed the Jones beach show. But did see him at MSG w Jeff Beck about 8 months before he died. Effin helicopters.

I worked concerts as a Stage Tech at the Saginaw Civic Center in Saginaw Michigan back in the day. Stevie came into town for a show and I worked "deck". This meant I was on the stage, to the left of him during the performance. I was already a big fan before I saw him live. Talk about having a great seat. He was wearing a hat the a big long feather sticking out of it. He hardly looked at the strings the entire time. Unforgettable.

You were so amazed by his playing and singing in the first three-quarters of the performance that I got my popcorn out waiting for when he spun it behind his back! He truly was amazing. My brother and I have competing jealousies. He saw Stevie Ray about 5 times and I never saw him and I saw Led Zeppelin 3 times and he never did. He couldn’t see Zeppelin because he was too young at the time but I’ve been kicking myself for years for not being aware of just how good he was live. At least a good number of his performances were filmed. Great reaction!
I was 18 when I first discovered Stevie Ray and I had been playing guitar for about three years or so and just kinda coming into my own with it and like most of my contemporaries was diving “head long” into heavy metal 🤘 but when I heard this I was hooked!!! He was pretty much personally responsible for putting the blues scene back on the map and I was all about it 😁 He turned me on to the blues and it’s a love affair that’s been going on ever since! There has been so many greatest in my life and SRV is truly THE. greatest guitarist that ever lived. So much passion when he plays, he actually pulls your personal struggles out of you to the light as if he and you can relate. Truly an awesome musician with a caliber we will never see again. R.I.P. As a fellow guitarist, I always admired him. He’s probably the biggest influence on my plane. I also highly recommend that you watch his performance of Voodoo Chile’ Live from Austin, Texas, 1989.

I love your perceptions. SRV’s guitar style is so emotional, just like you mentioned. He and his guitar become one. They are the instrument and vocalist combined. I think the reason he plays so fast, clean and emotional is because he isn’t playing the guitar. He’s feeling it. 😊🎸
I’ve never heard another musician with the soul that Stevie Ray had. There were layers upon layers of depth and personality even in the simplest guitar chords he played. And his voice had it too. Just an unbelievable talent.
Saw him in Columbia SC in 81, I believe, and he opened for Huey Lewis and the News, and SRV stole the show. Was amazing. Pride and Joy is one of my fav songs from him. #ToolArmy
OMG Aileen, I am so glad you reacted to this song. SRV was a true master of his guitar to the point where it's been said that his Stratocaster is not just a guitar but is an extension of his body and soul. He never played a song the same, it was always different according to what he was feeling at the time and how he wanted or feel to communicate to the listener. HIs talents was so inspirational that even the supposed guitar gods like Eric Clapton and the other rocks and blues greats before him all admitted that he was at a different level and uniquely special who always knew what to do. This whole show is worth watching, it is the most epic performance he ever filmed which was filmed in 1983. His renditions of Jimi Hendrix tunes are arguably equal or even better because he put his signature on them. Unfortunately his professional recording career only lasted seven amazing years until he died in a helicopter crash in 1990 [exactly 33 years ago tomorrow] after a blues festival concert where he played with all the living legends that night. His band was was known as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble which consisted of himself, Chris Layton on drums and Tommy Shannon on bass, later on they added keyboardist Reece Wynans.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was born on October 3,1954 in Dallas Texas his older brother Jimmie Vaughan who is a great guitarist In his own right and had a band called The Fabulous Thunderbirds is 3 yrs older then Stevie Ray got an electric guitar when he was 10 yrs old, Stevie Ray loved the electric guitar so on Stevie Ray's 7th birthday he got a toy guitar with cowboys and Indians on it but with that toy guitar he learned how to play Wine Wine Wine and Thunderbird by The Night Caps (on a toy guitar). In 1964 Jimmie gave Stevie Ray his electric guitar for his first gig at the age of 10 at a roller rink, Stevie Ray had joined a band called Krackerjack along with Double Troubles basses Tommy Shannon. Stevie Ray not only plays behind his back but he also plays behind his head, one hand, broken string, switch guitar in the middle of a solo and never missed a beat, no hands just by moving the guitar up and down side to side, backwards, tune his guitar while playing, his teeth, adjust his AMP'S while playing one handed, elbow and could play behind his back longer than anyone ever could, he could also play the drums and Saxophone. Stevie Ray's career only span years and starting with his album Texas Flood that was released on June 13,1983 and in that 7yrs Stevie Ray accompanied so much he was the first musician to be inducted into The Austin Music Hall Of Fame, in 2000 he was inducted into The Blues Hall Of Fame, and in 2015 he was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. He collected so many awards, on December 13,1983 Austin City Limits video was voted Guitar Player Magazine's Best New Talent, Best Electric Blues Guitar Player and Best Guitar Album with his album Texas Flood, he and Jeff Beck are the only Triple Award Guitarist ever. On November 18,1984 Stevie Ray won a W.C.Handy National Blues Award, Entertainer Of The Year and Instermental Of The Year, he was the first white person to win either. In 1977 Stevie Ray put a band together called Triple Threat Reuve with Lou Ann Barton vocals but when she left on November 24,1979 Stevie Ray took over the vocals, in 1980 he changed the name to Double Trouble with Chris Layton joining Triple Threat Reuve on September 10,1978 and was Stevie Ray until his death, Tommy Shannon on bass joined Double Trouble on June 23,1981 and Reese Wynans on keys joined Double Trouble on June 7,1985. Stevie Ray always said the biggest influence in his life was his brother Jimmy Vaughan and on August 26, 1990 Stevie Ray went to East Troy Wisconsin to open 2 shows for Eric Clapton along with Robert Clay,Buddy Guy and his brother Jimmie Vaughan to both shows selling out to 40,000 fans. That afternoon Stevie Ray came down from his hotel room and told Jimmie and the band he had a weird dream that he died and he was looking down at all these people crying, on August 27,1990 after Eric Clapton finish his show they all came out and the last song Stevie Ray ever performed with Buddy Guy, Robert Clay, Eric Clapton and his brother Jimmie Vaughan was Sweet Home Chicago by Robert Johnson. Stevie Ray boarded a helicopter that crashed into the side of a mountain right after takeoff, the pilot had just failed his test for using the gages on that helicopter, never flew that helicopter and never flew at night before. Stevie Ray is so sadly missed even today. FOR ME STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN WILL ALWAYS BE THE GOAT.

SRV is a legend. It is hard to remain composed when listening to him and watching him! His technique is so impressive, but for me it's the emotion he puts into his songs and his musicality that take this to another level.
I was fortunate enough to see SRV many times back in those days. An absolutely otherworldly experience every time. Nobody ripped into a song like that man. He may not be the greatest to ever do it, but there’s certainly no one better, either. RIP legend.
Two facts that make SRV even more insane: 1. Most people believe he played with either heavy or extra heavy gauge strings. 2. People who worked with SRV said that he would do a set that was 2-3 hours long and then go back stage and jam with whoever wanted to for hours after. So he was playing for 5-6 hours straight. The man was a beast.

Everytime I watch SRV, I have to sit in awe at the amount of hours he must have spent practicing. To master an instrument to that degree took an epic amount of work, dedication and love
Some friends and I were at the Arizona state fair in 1985 when I was 17. We were looking for a place to smoke and we went into the coliseum. SVR was playing. I'd never heard of him, but it was a spiritual experience. I immediately went and bought everything I could find by him and Double Trouble. I was driving home from work in 1990 and had to pull over when I heard he died. He was one of the absolute best guitarists ever.
SRV obviously was one of the guitar gods. The guitar was basically an extension of him, & the two were a perfect duo. Stevie was the embodiment of blues and soul. All of us are blessed for the musical gifts he's left us. ❤

Aileen never compare yourself to anyone.... playing guitar is a unique experience to express yourself. SRV has been my favorite guitarist since I first heard him. SRV didn't played the guitar, he bled his soul into it for the world to smile and cry.
The feeling you have hearing SRV the first time is the feeling I have every time. There are many phenomenal guitarists out there. Pioneers, virtuosos, creative geniuses, and just plain bad asses. Nobody, not even any of them, can emote through the guitar like he could.
This guy could literally do whatever he wanted on guitar. Most people who solo for this long get boring, but not SRV. His creativity and passion were incredible.
Don't feel bad about wanting to throw your guitar away. In an interview, Eric Clapton said that after he heard SRV in London, he considered it as well because he feared he couldn't share a stage with SRV. He was an amazing artist. To make his speed even crazier, know that he played HEAVY string sets, usually 13s, and sped around them like they were nothing, bending them to his will. Tommy Shannon was a great companion on the bass, playing tight blues grooves that kept the songs moving while Stevie went crazy with his solos.

SVR was, of course, a very accomplished guitarist. Not one of the fastest nor most technically diverse, but there was no one who passed him in passion and power of play. The guy's fingers could punch holes through concrete walls they were so strong. He often used the highest gauge strings to avoid breaking them every few minutes. He's always been in my top five guitar players of all time.
I came of age in Austin at the time Stevie was making his chops and becoming famous. Some of my fondest memories of that time was going to watxh him play at local clubs like Antone's, Hole In The Wall, Liberty Lunch etc. Even after he got big he and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, his brother Jimmie's band, would play Labor Day, Memorial Day, Christmas, and New Years Eve shows for their hometown. A good friend of mine here in Austin is a guitar player, can't throw a rock in Austin without hitting one. Anyway, back in '87 Mike was playing a gig at Antone's and broke a pickup on his guitar and was ending the show early because he didn't have a spare. BTW, Mike played a Fender Strat, like Stevie. As he was packing up, Stevie appeared out of nowhere with a spare set of pickups he had taken off his #1, the very guitar he's playing in this video. He had been in the back with Clifford Antone enjoying the show without anyone's knowledge. He told Mile he was enjoying and didn't want him to stop. He literally gave Mike the pickups off his favorite guitar to keep playing. Like giving the proverbial shirt off his back. That's who he was.
I saw him at one of the free concerts on Auditorium Shores. I got there early and was there for his sound check. It was better than a lot of shows I’ve seen.

I've always felt that Stevie Ray's voice wasn't really talked about because he was such an incredible guitarist. Such a great voice for the blues. No doubt a true maestro on the guitar. As much as I hate to call someone the best in any creative field..... Stevue Ray Vaughan might be the best lead guitarist........
SRV is a legend, I lived in Austin Tx from '79 - '86 and first saw SRV perform live in 1980. I likely saw him perform live more than 50 times in the Austin area in the early 80's. Although I doubt SRV ever remembered my name, He's always pointed me out in the crowd when He saw me. I never met Chris, but I met Tommy on several occasions in a certain setting, I probably met SRV only about 10 times, but I was absolutely gob-smacked as a fan. I must say, after seeing 50+ live performances, I don't think I ever saw SRV play a song twice the same way... He'd hit key points, Double Trouble was good enough to follow and support just about anything, and SRV would just tear of in any direction He was feeling. Many knew SRV much better than me, I didn't even really know him, I doubt He ever remembered my name.... but in those days... SRV and Tommy had their own issues, (their story, not mine), after the European Tour and being named "Guitar Player of the Year", He didn't play as much locally any more.... and I moved from Austin in '86. In 1990, when I heard over the radio that SRV had been killed in a helicopter crash I sat in my car and cried for hours.... and I was a 6'4" 220 pound drug abuse counselor in San Antonio. When you saw Stevie play in Austin you’d leave drenched in sweat, tingling, silent, smiling, and feeling like you’d just had a religious experience, and everyone else was the same. He tapped into a Source of music, like a spring, that he knew how to find, let it take him over, and held on while music flowed through him. No man could play like that, but this music came through Stevie. It proved to us that God is active in our lives, and it made us so happy. “Little Wing” from this same show is another astonishing performance where the Spirit plays through him. Thank you

SRV is musical soul food, there’s just something about him, he didn’t simply play, he channeled something into his guitar. Something otherworldly, cosmic, perhaps even religious. I’m still not entirely sure he was human. One that always struck me is how well he can go from smooth & sexy to gritty & angry so easily, his selection in notes and chords for those transitions is all but a religious experience. And your heart rate shows it. ;-) No, we won’t be as good, or play like him, but you be you, play what YOU feel, let it sing from the guitar. That’s what we can all take from him, his dedication, and tap some ourselves.
