You can guarantee the other gardener isn't declaring his £10 an hour, doesn't have a waste licence and doesn't have liability insurance. I have this discussion with a fair few jobs I quote on, they go with the cheaper guy for a while and then want you to take over as he either does a bad job or is unreliable.
That's exactly what happens I've had it a few time peoe get a cheaper price then they call me back to sort it out. And wonder why we have to charge double what we first quoted
I don't think they have any idea how much it costs for the upkeep and running of the tools we use. Then there's the tax man to pay. I'm sure they think the hourly rate we charge goes straight into our pockets. Digging and weeding borders are very labour intensive jobs and I wish I'd thought to charge a different rate to suit that type of work.
Lol she would pay it fella as I've given her a price for scarifing her lawn and power washing her drive. Her gardener/handyman was asking me lal sorts of question about the job like ware to get rid of waste and all sort. Didn't tell him 😁 I've since Ben passed and she has two old blokes working instead of me. Which says it all
You have any commercial sites? Like offices and care homes etc? We have 21 now and don’t really need to do domestic gardens if we don’t want to. Much easier to deal with, give them a price per visit and its regular
Hi I've a couple of small business I look after but I've tried for bigger places even went andd looked at 13 sites once for one company. But what they wanted to pay wasn't worth the hassle as the first place was about an hour half drive and there was about a twenty minutes drive between each job so would if taken three day to do all the sites. From memory it was like £45 an hour and they only wanted a maximum of an hour per site per visit and it would of taken me 3 hrs on some of them as they had big hedges to trim granted only twice a year but still 45 for 3+hrs of work over an hour away plus taking waste away. Jeez, how can you guys make a living at 20.00 per hour ? Running any business costs a minimum of 30.00 per hour, but I suppose it depends on your demographics. If that woman is looking to pay you 15.00 per hour, you would be best selling all your equipment and getting that driving job you were after....... You are a professional, honest, hard working guy, make sure the "value" you bring to customers is appreciated by way of getting a decent rate for what you do. There are always people out there who will pay for the value you bring as I am sure you know. Ditch the low ballers !
Wow thank you for the nice comment means a lot and yes you are right but unfortunately my nxt test has been canceled and your right there are many people out there that will try it on and try andd screw you over. The problem with our trade is that it's not seen as a proper trade and any one can pick a spade or lawnmower up but it's doing it right and not coursing any damage in the first place.

I am not a landscaper but do a lot of fencing work and charge what I need to charge, and it ain't 20.00 per hour that's for sure...........I need to factor in tools, insurances, van, pension, holiday & sickness etc etc.........you find that your hourly rate soon needs to increase if you do the math ! Cheers fella think I mentioned in vid I've got all but two including this one to set fees. So with this one going so that just one left to sort out. My normal minimum charge for a general garden maintenance is £30 for about a 40min session. I've just dropped £13,800 on a new van so she won't be getting it for £15 an hour trust me.

Me too once I get it but Ford dealers are just as shite as ther vans 😂😂😂😂 Yeah i started outdoing hourly rates but have thankfully got rid as the years have gone. This one it's a 8 Yr old garden I've done so was going to honour it but not now
Some absolute chancers out there. Makes you wonder if she was trying it on and seeing what your reaction was. Reminds me of when I first started out and I cut an old bag's lawn and was done in half an hour. She knew I charged £15 an hour as a wet behind the ears rookie, but as there was nothing else to do I assumed it would be taken as read the cost was £15. After I packed up I knocked the door and she said as I had only been there half an hour, here's £7.50...never went back again.
Hope she paid what's due pal. I had something similar years ago but it was a client I worked for a few months, always paid no issues. Then one day questioned it and said I thought you were £10 per hour... I'd never charged that price. We agreed to disagree and went our separate ways.
Yeah I got the extra 40 from here but she wantede to carry on at 15 an hour so I will make my excuses drop her a price list off and go from there. She said she pays for green thumb which will charge her abou 80 notes for five mins work.
lol I wish I had a tenner for every time ive had the (my other gardener only charged £10 per hour) touch tried on me. I love to see their jaw drop when I ask why aren't the coming anymore. they think our vans & tools run on fresh air.atb
Lol yeah it's the same old shite oh the guy down road will do it for ex amount. Doesn't take long for them to call you back when shit hit the fan they the other guy breaks something or just generally takes the piss
I'm on the same rate as you £20 p/h on my hourly rate jobs and I still get people moaning back at me saying that's too expensive. It drives me nuts. We're all just trying to make a living at the end of the day and survive. It's finding the people that value you and your work and getting rid of the stingey cheap skates. I'm really clamping down on it this year. If they're not happy with the price, walking away or binning them. Hope you find some new customers that will understand your charges and value you. She was a new customer at an old customers house the lady before her definitely apreciated me lovely couple. And your right there are a lot of tight arsed out there. I could work for aldi and get about 9.50 an hour an d come out with the same with less hassle and repair bills. Thankfully the customers I've up my prices to this year not one has complained or questioned it
wow £20 an hour for weeding and border work, mate that's a bargain, last years price for me was 25.50, this year its £30 one of the very few hourly rate jobs I do, she would not want me then, some people know your value and some don't. I only have 2 stand alone weeding jobs, 1 said no this year cos I upped the price per 4 weekly by 50p to £26 lol. You did a cracking job there too.

Yeah most peoe think guarding is easy work and anyone can pick it up and do it. But once tools or van break down and they haven't the money to drop in a new or used equipment they soon realise they ware doing for free

Nope won't be back untill Ive sent her an upto date price list. I'm just waiting on me new van to be ready wasent to have it today but they found a couple of issues so have to be sorted out first. Thanks for comment i love interacting with everyone that comments

Lol yeah they crack me up I allways tend to had a few quid on top on my normal prices if I think they are gunna try it on then I get what I was going to charge any ways and if they don't argue its fair game 😁
Skilled work, professional equipment, fully insured and paying taxes, but still, they want to pay us peanuts. If we all keep undercutting each other then everyone loses. These customers don't mind paying a fortune to have their haircut, why should our industry be any less? BTW, do you charge extra to take away the green waste?
Yeah green waste is extra but this year I'm planing on find someone else to take it away as it's become a ball ache having to book in and given a slot that suits them. And your right I'm fully insured spent load on equipment and yet people expect it for frer
Time to say goodbye. £10 a hour is hardly worth you turning up. I charge £12 a small lawn and I'm there for 20 to 30mins. Weeding is priced per job but about £20hr. One garden I do is charged at £10 for 45mins work but then she's a mate and she gets me loads of one off work. People are so reluctant to quote prices on her for loads of different reasons. By the time you take out fuel and insurance and wear and tear, £10hr just ain't worth it. It looks like the arborist expert has dragged the jockey wheel across the grass. If I'd done that, I'd at least try to disguise the mess! No doubt you would too. Anyway, keep busy.
Not necessarily true I run around with a bicycle & trailer doing the odd jobs weeding etc.. I'm meticulous at tidying as I go & I work as hard if not harder as anyone else don't charge all that much just love the satisfaction of a job well done
