What a Rancher Looks Like

It’s calving season on ranches around the West. For Maggie Schmidt, who grew up in Salt Lake City, it means cold, early mornings and cold, late nights. Maggie is a ranch manager in Deer Lodge, Montana and while there are moments she may still feel like an outsider, there usually isn’t time to worry about it. There is too much work to be done and always cows to be looked after.

This video has given me more confidence and confirmation in a recent career change. I am 52 years old and decided to get out of the corporate world and go back to my roots. I have recently taken a job as a ranch manager and have 3 men on my team. I am rusty and feeling a bit nervous about this huge change in my life but want to be the best ranch manager I can be. Thank you for doing this video. You are an inspiration.

I was trained as a teacher and writer of training materials, but wanted to realize my Dad's dream of having 10 acres with a house in the middle. After 25 years of working in education and high-tech training, I had my house built on my 10 acres and ended up not going back to teaching because of a traumatic brain accident. Started with laying hens, added 2 dogs, a couple of bee hives, and ( right now) 11 meat goats. I don't think anyone who knew me back in my 30s would see me as a small rancher! But I love the animals ( much better than some of the people I worked with) and complain to myself about all the work that needs to be done.I've been at this 15 years, and started with the goats 4 summers ago. Every day is different. And NEVER let anyone tell you that you are too old! I'm in my late 60s and do most things here by myself, including building a 12ft x 24ft.goat barn.

I played the audio to your video 2 times before I actually viewed it, and remembered appreciating your voice, the long soft silent pauses, and the music choices. After having seen it for a couple of minutes, I thought “she must have 100,000 marriage proposals by now.” Only to find that your video has less than 700 views. You made my day today. Thank you. Don’t stop, you are very talented!

With the way she talks about the animals and taking care of them I'd imagine a person like her would rather work on an animal sanctuary than a ranch. Especially when she says matter of life and death with the calves is hard for her, since ranching is a business that will require their eventual death. At it's core that is not a concern about the animal itself but about the loss of profit.

@cathyscribner7798

It's complicated. Having ranched myself for a handful of yearsl in WY, ranchers know their animals better, understand them, and care for them more than most 'city folks'' ..because there's an implicit equalizing aspect to being in such a raw environment alongside them every day, in all sorts of weather..rendering ranchers just as vulnerable as their animals..their moods and illnesses.. and don't get me started about calving, lambing, shearing, and branding. It's really, really hard work ..and can be really dangerous for everyone involved.

there's easier ways to make a living, no better way to live. we slowly changed over to Bison, far less sleep loss, now we loose sleep over what the newly elected adm is going to do and if we will be allowed to keep ranching. my wife says she ranches with kids on her hip and in high heels, no man can challenge that.

Ya the zoo and exotic animal community deal with the same thing. As a Zoo Keeping student it sucks seeing my field antagonized thanks to the incoming administration and ban laws I'm afraid what I have been working towards is going to be gone before I can even live it. Cows are all that's left of the now extinct auroch so in a way it's arguably one of this first animals to be preserved from extinction.

Personally I feel the ranchers are the owners that are the operators. If you are too big to do your own work you are too big 😉 maybe I am biased being a rancher who works beside her husband and we do it all ourselves. Otherwise you are a ranch owner, a ranch manager, or a ranch hand.

Simone De Beauvoir argues that it is not the biological condition of women per se that constitutes a handicap: it is how a woman construes this condition which renders it positive or negative. When someone thinks of a rancher they generally think of a man. When a woman enters a domain traditionally dominated by men, she can feel inadequate and be blind to the advantages she brings "Because she is a woman". In general women have a capacity to feel deeper connection with other living beings. Sometimes a woman will lose this ability or shut it down because of trauma but it is her natural birth right. Both men and women are born with gifts, not only as individuals but as expressions of their biology. Anyone who works closely with animal's notices the behavioral differences between the males and females. Your capacity to feel a connection with the animals is strongly evident. That gift is a powerful force in being a "Rancher" and unfortunately for the animals who are in the care of the rancher, a gift that is often absent.

In this business of being a rancher or Cow hand, people can be a little standoff, being your not like them.
