Hey Chris! Stavanger is the oil capitol of Norway. The stuff you saw on the dock was oildrilling equitment and pipes. The grey building is the oil museum. People from all over the world and especially US came to work with oildrilling at sea in the 60-70,s! Have a good trip! 👍😃

Lots of European countries have laws that prohibit shops to be open on sundays to provide the workers as well as the community with a bit of rest and quiet. I don't know if that's the case in Norway as well, but it's that way in Germany :)

It's almost like that in Norway yes. Smaller stores that sell everyday items are allowed to keep open if they want to on Sundays though. 100 square meters is the maximum size. The only exception is gas stations wich can be 150 square meters.

Chris, I'm enjoying this trip to Norway. It's interesting to see towns in other countries. Seeing a McDonald's wasn't surprising, but to see a 7-Eleven, I was a little surprised by that. Thanks for taking us along!❤

I think I saw a Circle-K logo on something Chris was carrying (or somewhere in the background) in a previous video. I didn't even know that was a real store chain, I thought it was something invented for the Bill and Ted movies!

Hi Chris! I Enjoy your videos. In most European countries Sunday is still a day of rest. Stores and shops are closed for the day.The way it use to be here back in the day. I have family in Austria and southern Germany and the many many times I have been there, Sundays are a time to relax enjoy with the family and go to a nice beer garden or fest and just have fun. Sadly North Americans forgot this. Greetings from Edmonton Canada

Sunday in norway, while no longer a holy day, it's a day of rest by law, keeping a store open would incur a 200% pay for the employee, this way, the state has incentivized stores to keep closed on that day to let people have some time off. i believe that saturdays have 30-50% extra for saturdays. Besides, the cruise tourists aren't really bringing in much to the stores, so there's not really that much interest in catering to them outside "ordinary serving hours".
@Ganiscol
@Ganiscol 11 месяцев назад
As to why most stores are closed, the reason being that in much of Europe Sunday is respected as the day of no work. I suspect in Norway its similar as here in Switzerland, where a store needs a special permit to open on a Sunday and for that there needs to be a valid reason. A gift shop in a touristic area would have more of a reason to be open than an ordinary clothing shop, for example. Restaurants and gas station shops are basically a natural exception anywhere and working on a Sunday requires additional pay for employees. I like that. There has to be at least one day in a week most people cant just be forced to come in and work. And if you're practicing Christian, I think the Bible says so: 'Thou shalt not work on Sunday, thou shalt worship thy God!' Or something like that. 😅

America usa use to be like that but now most have thrown God out of everything and now the people are paying the price for that mistake. Maybe some day people will realize the need for God in all things and God can bless us once again that is my hope.

A lot of us here in Canada still keep Sundays where we do nothing but go to church and otherwise relax. Sad that so many have thrown God out but hopefully they will come to realization that God is very real and alive. With out God we cannot do anything.

I think Norwegians are mostly atheist, actually. There's not many reliable surveys specifically on beliefs, but mostly on religious affiliation. Religious affiliation is not very useful to look at, since the state evangelical Lutheran church is opt-out. So unless you fill in some paperwork, you will be a member of the state church. The surveys I found suggest at least 60% are atheists, probably more.

We love Norway! It is pronounced Stra von ger:). The price for that jacket is probably $599. Krona more for us in USA. We bought a Helly Hansen jacket there and it was over $400. US dollars. First time watching and I’ll watch more! Thank so much. Marie

Its kind of weird especially for outsiders but its illegal to have open stores on sunday's in norway. the law translate to something like public holidays and public holiday peace where regions have to apply for a special permit to have open stores. There are obvious exceptions thought, like gas stations and essentials. Not 100% sure why stavanger is closed thought, since there are exceptions for tourist areas if they apply for it

Businesses in many towns in the US used to close on Sunday. I remember them being closed in the early 70s. You will still find a few businesses closed on Sundays, but not whole towns.

it's StavAnger, not Stavenger. It is composed of two old norse words: angr, m. Norse for strait vik, fjord, and stafr, for staff, post, pillar, marking staff. (today written as "stav" and "anger").

I have a question, I’ve watched your channel for several years now and whenever you go to a foreign country you are always driving. How do you find your way around? Is it hard? Do you have to get an international driver’s license from Trile AAA? I’m just interested in hear your take on that subject and do you thing a woman alone would be safe traveling to places you have gone?
