And remember, this is the same woman who went on to nail Stairway in front of Led Zeppelin nearly forty years later, at age sixty-two. Ann is now seventy-three, and still killing it. She's a national treasure.

A barracuda is a predatory saltwater fish that stalks rather than hunts. They're incredibly fast, powerful and nasty fighters. Ann and Nancy Wilson wrote this song about one of their promoters that wanted to portray them as incestuous polyamorous lesbians, to basically refer to the promoter as a nasty, slimy, stalking predator. Also, Sisters harmonizing. No autotune, just incredible talent and Ann Wilson is still killing it in her 70s, she recently covered Layne Staley’s vocals on "Rooster" with Alice In Chains.

OMG you must react to Heart's "Magic Man" next! MM was their first hit single from their debut album "Dreamboat Annie" two years prior. And to fully appreciate this band, beyond their ability to rock, please check out their folk pop/ acoustic songs "Dog and Butterfly", "Love Alive", and "Dreamboat Annie". You'll get to hear just how intricate the Wilson Sisters' harmonies really are. ❤

Fun Fact: Ann & Nancy Wilson are sisters, they wrote this song as an angry response to their record label spreading false scandalous rumors about them, saying that Ann & Nancy were secretly lovers (which obviously wasn't true) just as a marketing ploy to increase album sales. This made the sisters so mad that they wrote this song to tell off, rebuke & reprimand these record label agents, calling them "barracudas" (a predator fish known for their deliberately cruel temperament & vicious behavior).

The story on the writing of this song goes like this. Ann and Nancy Wilson were at record company party of some sort when one of the sleazy slimy record company executive asked Ann "How is your lover?" Ann thought he meant her boyfriend at the time. So she said he's fine and the scum bag replied no I mean your lover your sister how's your lover? This pissed Ann off and that very night she wrote Barracuda! And the rest is history! Love that you are going down the Heart rabbit hole! They have so many great song! What About Love, and if you want to hear Nancy take the lead in some songs, These Dreams, Stranded, and Will You be There in The Morning. You really can't go wrong with Heart! Cheers!

Note: Heart doesn't always use acoustic guitar, but when they do it's always Nancy playing it. She plays several instruments, including electric guitars, but acoustic is her passion. She really spotlights her talent on the live concert video of Heart's Crazy On You. It intros with an extended acoustic guitar solo by Nancy. Excellent performance.

Barracuda was iconic when it came out. Mainly for the unique guitar riffs. I loved it then and I love it still. And I admit that Ann was an eye's treat for that young man I was back then. But yeah, the entire song was just electrifying when I first heard it on the radio. I wasn't able to distinguish Ann's voice and artistry as I do now which is kinda sad. But I loved to rock along with that masterpiece.

I lived Seattle in the late 70's, I became a fan in 77 when I heard the Dreamboat Annie album and to this day there is no other female voice in rock that can touch the power and range of Ann but if you listen to some of their minstrel sounding albums like Little Queen or Dog & Butterfly where the sisters blend harmonies with acoustic sound that is simply beautiful and pure. I ran down to Rainy day records in Olympia Wa right after school my senior year in 78 the day the D&B album was released. I couldn't wait to hear it and found a friend with a turntable where we both sat and listened intently. The way that they blend hard rock and soft ballads on every album is one of the reasons for their long success. I saw them in 1980 on the Bebe La Strange`tour where they rocked the Tacoma dome a local venue. I have so many favorites, if I had to pick a favorite song, I would have to go back to 1st album Dream Boat Annie (as a young man, Annie was a dreamboat) and choose a song that is very underrated in their catalog. The song is White Lightning and Wine and it has a funky guitar start and Ann delivers some great screams in this rockin' track. Who doesn't like the use of a cowbell giving it a time stamp of sorts for the 70's? Take time to watch the Kennedy Center honors of Led Zeppelin and see the intensity at which the band listened to Hearts performance of Stairway to Heaven with the added feature that really excited the members of Zeppelin with Hearts rendition. Enjoy! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LFxOaDeJmXk.html

If you want to hear how beautiful and then just how hard Heart can rock, listen to "Dreamboat Annie" followed by "Crazy on You" - - - - - Crazy on You is Hearts signature song. When it hit the streets nobody could believe it. I've mentioned this before, out of prolly 75 to 80 concerts I've seen, Heart is still in my top 3. Huge respect to both of these women for what they did in the Rock n Roll world and when they did it. They took a backseat to nobody

When I first heard "Crazy on You", I thought, Finally, a woman who does flat-out hard rock and does it as well or better than any male. Ann Wilson instantly became one of my two all-time favorite female voices in pop/rock, along with Karen Carpenter (who was actually a smooth jazz drummer and singer).

Another song with a similar background riff is "Edge of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks. Both Heart and Stevie were part of the female power rock explosion in pop music during the '70s and '80s, along with Blondie (Debbie Harry), Joan Jett and others. Being a teenager in the '70s, the BEST (and wildest) girls to date were those who were Heart fans!

Barracuda is their most well-known song. But they have so many great songs that are criminally underrated. They are so diversified and their songwriting abilities were off the charts. Two songs I always recommend are Dream of the Archer and Minstral Wind. If you do give them a listen, I would suggest listening to the live versions. Dream of The Archer - 1995 The Road Show performance and Minstral Wind Live in Seattle, 2002.

Another great choice. Ann Wilson has a killer set of pipes. And she (and the band) can shift effortlessly between soft songs like “Dog And Butterfly” and straight-ahead rockers like this one. I fell in love with their driving “Black On Black” but I’m not sure if it was ever released as a single. Also, side note, this is the studio audio track, over (semi-) live visuals. Don’t enjoy hearing “washed up”. We don’t know that part of your life, and don’t like hearing you described that way. It doesn’t describe what we’re seeing here on the Tube. Their later music was good too, but the original band members from the earlier albums and what they wrote was so hot! Your reaction was great! Her sister Nancy played some lead guitar but the main lead guitar playing was by the older band members which were Roger Fisher and Howard Leese (Howard also played keyboards and synthesizer) That's Roger playing lead here on this song.

Beyond cool...vocals and guitar. Put's me in mind of my favourite old Queen songs like 'Keep Yourself Alive' and 'Now I'm Here'. Nothing beats being a 70s child :-)

Great choice for a Heart reaction! One of their best. That is Michael Derosier on drums, and you're right, he's excellent. The guitar solo you enjoyed is by Roger Fisher, a tremendous guitarist. He has a RU-vid video, where he explains how this song was created, since you're interested in the creation of this song. You might want to check that out. Please keep reacting to these classic bands, really enjoy your reactions.

By the way, piece of guitar trivia: Chuck Berry was the first guitar player to make it a lead instrument. This is one of the many reasons he was the first person inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. Before him it was always a backup instrument.

Ann Wilson is my favorite female rock vocalist. Here are some of the great songs they recorded in the late 1970s... Crazy On You, Magic Man, Dreamboat Annie, Love Alive, Kick It Out, Heartless, Straight On, Mistral Wind, Dog And Butterfly, Even It Up. Stacey - I think you would probably enjoy all of these.

For yet another flavor of this band, you might try Dog And Butterfly. It's a very easy, smooth, laid-back vibe. Like you said, they can do it all.

Heart was often called a female Led Zeppelin (usually not as a criticism). It was somewhat true; they covered many L.Z. songs, and the Wilson sisters were chosen to perform "Stairway to Heaven" at the now-legendary Kennedy Center Tribute. But they took that prog/metal quality and forged their own sound. "Dreamboat Annie" is an exceptional concept album, musically, lyrically, and in terms of production and recording. It was one of the early rock choices for a Half-Speed Master audiophile release; it remains one of my favorite albums ever. P.S. Roger Fisher (lead guitar) and Michael Derosier (drums) deserve more credit for the masterful, innovative sound of the first Heart incarnation.

Your P.S. is so spot-on. Usually all anyone talks about is Ann and Nancy. Of course they’re well worth talking about and praising, but there’s these guys there on stage with them… they’re not invisible.

Heart played for my senior prom. Ann is the same age as I am. The guitarist Sister, Nancy, was still at a neighboring high school. Led Zeplin II album was only a month old. Heart played whole lotta love from it and No Quarter from the first album. Nancy wrote Barracuda because she was disappointed by a man. She was angary.

We used to blast this song, and only Heart albums, errrr, tapes...on our ghetto blaster...errr, boom box...on the school bus on the wau to middle school, err...Junior High School. We were only allowed Heart albums because the bus driver loved them and feared much of the other music we may have put on. Like very early Metallica, Judas Priest and earliest Motley Crue 😂

When I was in high school my best friend learned how to play this song on the guitar. He was so talented and recently passed away. This song always makes me think of the first time he played it. Please do the live version on “Crazy on You” next. “These Dreams,” is another 80’s song but featuring Nancy on vocals.

My three favorite female singers in chronological order, i.e. the order in which I first heard them, are Linda Ronstadt, Ann Wilson and Angelina Jordan.

Haven't heard Jordan, but your 1st two are undeniable. Also check out Karen Carpenter = PERFECTION/ accurate; hits the notes possibly more precise on the scale than any other singer in history. And plays the drums like a bastid. I think the most talented female voice I've ever heard is Alanis Morrisette. The insane things she can do with zero effort are beyond human. And But the one who has made me cry the most from the amazing beauty is Celine Dion. And Dolores O'Riordan ain't far behind.

@@user-nd6bl1hm8i Yes: One-Take Karen, who started as a virtuoso jazz drummer, and only took lead vocal at 16 or so because Richard Carpenter and John Bettis wanted her to front the group. Drumming remained her first musical love.

Speaking of one-take wonders, there is a very short clip (29 sec), titled, "Stargate's Mikkel Eriksen talking about Angelina Jordan". She's sitting there while he tells her: "There's only that many vocalists in the world that can sing a song, top to bottom in one take, and it's amazing. Few of those people that we work with is 1: Beyonce, 2: Sam Smith, 3: Angelina Jordan. That is so rare, a gift and very, very special.". She seems a little embarrassed by it, but so well deserving of the praise.

@@DanielByers-qf9qiFrom Wikipedia: "Angelina Jordan (born Angelina Jordan Astar; 10 January 2006) is a Norwegian singer whose audition for the 2014 season of Norway's Got Talent at the age of seven, singing "Gloomy Sunday" in the style of Billie Holiday, became a viral video online and brought her worldwide press coverage.[1] She went on to win the competition at the age of eight with her performance of George Gershwin's "Summertime". Since then, she has worked to raise money on behalf of environmental causes and children's charities around the world." Her family turned down many offers from recording companies because they wanted her to have a normal childhood. She eventually signed with Republic Records in 2020 at the age of 14 with the understanding that she finishes school before being promoted. In the meantime, they built her a studio for her personal use. She has now graduated high school and turned 18 on Jan 10, and will appear in Las Vegas on Feb 29th in the same room where Elvis performed.

Ann's three octave range is legendary. Karen Carpenter was another female lead singer that had that type of range and pitch perfect voice in the easy listening category.
