I really have to wonder whether if China would seriously commit to allying itself with North Korea if the fragile peace on the peninsula ever shattered. Though modern day China continues to ally itself with nations that are typically anti US in order to carve out their own sphere of influence, it’s economy thrives greatly because of globalization, and a lot of that is with the US. Would they really risk a war with US, South Korea, and Japan just because they don’t REALLY want a US military presence on their border? The Cold War is over. It simply does not make any sense for China and the US to fight over an outdated buffer zone like North Korea. Both sides will have nothing to gain and everything to lose.

One thing that I know would possibly happen is that the North Korea cannot be targeted for nuclear weapons since South Korea and China is just around it's border so they have advantage in using their own nuclear missile without worrying any nuclear attacks. In other words the US allied countries should be able to defend itself against any nuclear attacks.

My brother was commander of the 108th Armored Division in the US Army in Ft. Stewart, Georgia. He recently retired this past year in 2017. The dude said the Abrams & Bradley tanks would have a hard time in North Korea because of the mountains. Those tanks aren’t built for that type of mountainous regions for combat. Which is why they’re only focusing on air strikes, US ground forces don’t have the #’s to take North Korea.

I agree with her in the sense that there is no limited warfare that would not entail mass casualties. Two solutions to this problem: 1) Peace agreement--we focus on mutually beneficial interests. or 2) one side destroys the other in a complete surprise attack.

This tells a preparation against North Korea if it causes a war, or at least, a warning.

This is quite possibly a somewhat distorted perspective on the prospect of an engagement with north korea. Far be it from me to claim to be an expert, however I'm old enough to remember a similar image painted by the media prior to another conflict against another tin-pot dictator - saddam hussein in '91. Everyone imagined his army of 1,5 million men would represent a viable threat to the US army. Everyone assumed saddam would be desparate enough to deploy chemical weapons; everyone predicted a huge battle with huge casualties. In the event, the iraqi army was at best a tasteless joke; the slaughter was absurdly one-sided. In an all-out war with north korea, the reasonable assumption is that the deciding factor will be air power, and north korea will be facing 3 of the best (including the very best) equipped air forces in the world, not to mention the aircrews will be vastly superior in training to those in opposition. The north korean air force might somehow survive 24 hours, once it's gone it's open season on every military asset the north has, and there will literally be next to nothing they can do about it. Millions of untrained, under-equipped, malnourished conscripts will be more of an impediment than an asset - they will do what the iraqis did and surrender in droves. If they fail to do it after the initial air strikes, they will do it when they are confronted by the mass of modern armor that they have to counter with nothing but their bayonets. They will do it when their meagre stores of ammunition run dry, when their communication lines break down, and their command structure collapses; they will do it when their under-trained junior officers begin to lose control and their commisars start shooting people who arent willing to fight with their teeth. Nothing about the north korean army reflects a logical, realistic expectation that it will perform to anything remotely similar to its self-asserted prowess. There is the possibility that kim will order a chemical weapons attack, however the likelihood that he'll get away with it more than once is practically nil. What follows may devolve into guerrilla warfare, but the conventional war will be over in a remarkably short period of time. I'm not saying we should launch an invasion of north korea, but there is no way kim can attempt to invade the south and expect to succeed. I suspect that he knows this very well, or at least his military staff do. Bear in mind that the social/political elite of north korea are not entrapped within the country to the same degree as the regular population; they travel, they have access to media and information. They know what awaits them in the event they decide to go down the hard road. It seems quite likely that many of his military and political leadership will in the event of conflict attempt to make their own separate peace.
