I had the opportunity to see this when Heather Headley was still in it and all I can say is this was AMAZING! I had tears in my eyes the entire time they sang. Heather Headley is a Master Class in theatre every time she is on stage!

The melody of “never felt nothing like this” starts tears down my face each time.

omfg this is amazing. Both Jennifer Hudson and heather are amazing, but I think heather’s voice just works so much better for this song. While Jennifer hudson’s slightly gritty voice is great on the whole for a character like Shug, for a more intimate song like this heather’s rich, warm voice is just perfect, especially harmonising with cynthia’s clear light voice. Absolutely amazing

Listen. Been crying since yesterday when I first watched this. Saw every other song from this colour purple and even performed one of them in a show but how could I have missed this one? Officially my favourite song from the production. Tears everytime I watch it. I've seen other vershions but this one gets me everytime. So soft, so sweet, so passionate. Could Heather be any more amazing . Ugh❤️

THE DIRECTION 👏 I could rave with the others about how stunningly-matched these vocals and performances are - that part is obvious - but John Doyle’s direction is masterful here. As Sondheim famously attributed to Hammerstein II, good musical theater should be able to answer the question: what is the character DOING? Often, the director is one who shapes that exact thing. And here, each performer is given incredibly clear moments to *act* and *react* - and those SUBTEXT moments carry the drama of a scene so powerfully that the lyrics are able to float above it all. When a song has a repetitive lyric - “what about love?” - it’s the subtext that keeps us riveted. These characters are pushing and pulling one another, trading hopes and fears, and all of that comes thru in the staging and direction. Each time one of them extends a hand to the other, it has a specific meaning: “let’s agree to do this.” or “hold on, I need a minute.” or “I’m afraid and I need you to hold me.” THIS is how you direct a musical and give talented singing ACTORS something for their characters to DO. One of the best Broadway shows I’ve ever seen. Was thrilled to see these two when I saw it.
