What about the dynamic range of an orchestra?

Let’s do another viewer question: If an orchestra can do 120 dB, how will that fit on a CD that only does 90 dB’s? Good question!!

Wow, there's so much clarity and intelligence here compared to the ocean of noise on RU-vid. That's why I come here every Friday. Thank you.

A very good, revealing lecture, Hans Beekhuyzen. I have learned from 1st year psychology at university that a little over 100Db is close to a threshold to possibly cause hearing damage. Therefore, the theoretical limit to be reached may not be an actual necessity.
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 5 лет назад
That threshold depends on the time you are exposed to it. Watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2hdIl33F45A.html

I find the dynamic range of an orchestra or even a piano playing a classical composition too big (think of the moonlight sonata). I turn up the volume during the low volume parts, but then suddenly the volume goes to maximum and everything explodes. If the amp/receiver has a night mode that would help a lot.

I don't care how well-behaved the audience is; ambient noise levels in a hall will probably drop no lower than 30 dBSPL on a good day. The quietest sections of music anywhere in the house will be no less than 60 dBSPL. This puts the dynamic range of even the loudest orchestra somewhere in the order of 30-60 dbSPL; well within the capabilities of 16-bit.

The compression used on high dynamic levels has always annoyed me, but I am not sure that trying to reproduce the dynamics of a large symphony orchestra in the average living room would be acceptable either... :(
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

That kind of compression is not used on good records
@Leonhart_93

In my long experience with classical music, I found out that I actually want it to be a bit more compressed. I want to listen to the finite details in the music, but for that I need to turn the volume up a lot....which in turn makes the whole place explode on sudden louder parts. So yeah, very large dynamic range is not always good. Of course the kind of compression I talk about is still light-years away from rock and pop music brick wall compression.

Correct, was not clear to me. After listening again it's clear. Thanks for the reply. One of the best channels for reviewing audio devices and giving technical information. I like your channel a lot. I'm waiting for a review of the RME-ADI2 DAC...

Patrick Meylemans If you double the power, that is an increase of 3 dB. If you double the sound pressure, that is 6dB
