In part 1 of this two-part video we looked at the reconstruction filter and its potential shortcomings, this video will try to shine a light on the other Achilles heel of digital audio: jitter.

Great video. I took your advice from your review of the SOtM switch and ran fiber from the router to the switch. The difference is astonishing. The music is insanely immersive, the bass is clean and strong and any harshness in the highs is gone. I will install a Chord M-scaler next week but I also want to run fiber from the SOtM switch to my SOtM sms200 ultra neo SE with a converter. I Would suggest you review the Chord M-scaler and the SOTM Master Clock in upcoming videos. The master clock has done well clocking the sms200, txultra and switch for me.

I have a dCS Rossini with the clock, and I can honestly say you can tell the difference between the sound with the clock and without.
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 3 года назад
You mean external clock versus internal clock, of course. Without a clock nothing goes.
@Sams911
@Sams911 3 года назад
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel haha. yes. I meant the external clock... of course all DAC's need a clock.. but this level of isolating it seems to take it to the next level. Only I wish there was a way to use it with SPDIF connections (using the Rossini clock output) .. but most CD and transport manufacturers don't make a clock input.

Tnx! beside unprecised API-calls to the cpu-clock, the quartz itself as another source of inaccuracy.

I was curious about something like a Chromecast audio feeding into a much nicer DAC like an Denafrips Ares II. Does that jitter translate through the DAC? Will it be audible? The Chromecast audio is SO simple for most folks. It's hard to sell them on a more finiky system (Allo Digione Signature) that requires some setup for a "cast to" feature. thanks!

Whether you hear the influence of jittery depends on your stereo, how it is set up and how sensitive your hearing is. I can't judge that from a distance.

Jitter should only be relevant for the DAC, correct? (when it is converting to analog as you show in your line graph). When the stream of bits from the streamer is entering the DAC, the DAC must resample. Unless it is hitting the edge of the signal, why would it see any impact of the edge being slightly off? Therefore, is there much importance of the cable connecting the streamer to DAC?

I’m working on an explanation. Please be patient and be assured it is clearly audible.

Hi Hans, This may sound like a huge request but here goes. I watched your video presentation on the Auralic G1 and your commented that it was the best streamer you have heard to date. Prior to watching the video I was pretty set on the G1 but found myself still somewhat conflicted between the Innuos Zen MK II or Zen Mini MKIII for instance. There are some threads on Audiogon that swear by the Innuos and I do not know if those singing the praises of an Innuos are simply for sonic reasons or other reasons such as the premise of ripping music and having it on hand to play via a HDD or at red book quality. So, do you think the Auralic G1 will tickle the audiophile's fancy versus the Innuos if one does not necessarily have a huge CD library.. Thanks, don

Great video. Very clear and informative. It makes me wonder: how hard would it be to gradually lower the clock performance in order to actually listen to jitter? Does such a device exists let's say for ear training purpose?
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 5 лет назад
Only sophisticated measurement equipment like those from Audio Precision, can do that with measurement tones. I know of no device that does that for ear training.
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

This kind of distortion is not due to jitter.

I have a question: You mention the most common (all?) of the "traditional" digital connections, but what about HDMI? I use HDMI (Mini DisplayPort to HDMI) between my laptop and my ONKYO receiver, partly because it was the easiest for the distance I need (3-4metres). Any thoughts on the quality as compared to the connections you usually mention?
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 5 лет назад
HDMI 'hides' audio in between the video signal. Therefore it all depends on the receiving end how well these signals get deinterlaced and thus how well the sound quality is.

Hello Hans, I'm a fan of your channel. I would like to request a review of PS audio DirectStream Junior DAC. It is 4k$, but maybe you can justify reviewing it by considering it as a 2k$ DAC with 2k$ bridge in a single box? Although, the bridge can be bought by itself for $899, so it is not 2k$. PS audio's trade in policy could lower the price of junior by 1200$ as well. I'm interested to know how the DAC compares to Brooklyn and how the internal bridge compares to sMS-200 Ultra NEO or Aries G1. Thank you,
