What Ahsoka Just Did is PURE GENIUS! (baylan hilt!)

Ray Stevenson/Baylan is such a big guy, I didn't even realize his hilt was that big.. He is really intimidating. I am sad that he passed away. He is one of my favorite actors.

When you get the crossguard stance in Jedi Survivor, the blade is extended and it becomes much like a broadsword with slow movements and wide strokes. Baylan's lightsaber could be utilizing that aspect without the crossguard vents, since his lightsaber has a hilt guard.

Baylan and Shin feel very promising as characters. Also really like Morgan Elspeth. She has a very witchy way about her, even the way she talks, which I didn't really notice when she appeared in the Mandalorian.

Ahsoka may have faced form VII before when battling Maul on mandalore as he was a practitioner however I agree that the weight of Baylon’s blade would produce a slightly different style

The fight between Ahsoka and Baylan was really awesome storytelling! The very asian influenced style of Ahsoka`s stance, moves and blades vs the Templar like appeal and swordfighting style of Baylan was so well done and portrayed that without a single word said there was immediate tension and dialog through visuals

I get the impression that Baylan Skoll -- as a Jedi Padawan and Knight -- has an affinity for The High Republic Era of lightsabers and Jedi Knighthood. The Eye Of Sion sounds like a close relative to The Gaze Electric. Both ocular-oriented.

Did anyone else get the urge to play Jedi Survivor after watching Ahsoka 'solve' the first puzzle?

I like the Medieval/swords and sorcery aspect that these new characters bring. Marrok is very Medieval-style as well. I think the time difference/dilation between the two galaxies will play into that. The other galaxy may be the "old" world. Longer ago in a galaxy further away.

why are none of these Star Wars fan pages discussing the RED Scroll at the start of the show, and what it could mean, considering they have been traditionally yellow and at a sharp angle. Could this be a sign that this is a story from the imperial view, or its a start of a new story putting the Skywalker story behind them, or it means nothing and I am reading more into this than I need too?

5:06 _Master & Apprentice_ also states that Kohlen-powered lightsabers are incredibly weak against non-Kohlen objects compared to Kyber-powered ones. If I recall correctly, Kenobi was unable to cut through things with a Kohlen crystal in his lightsaber.

Baylan tends to move the whole saber around when blocking blaster shots, which is different from how others do it. Most others move the blade or swing the whole thing, but Baylan keeps it fairly stable, moving the whole thing at once. His saber might be like the Darksaber, which is another unique blade. Baylan also swings it wide in the trailer clips vs Ahsoka.

(Though I expect a lot of this is simply that Baylan is a really big guy so he needs that long a hilt for a lot of his moves to work. He seems to rely on strength and precision rather than all that much speed. )

One thing I did like about Kylo Rens light saber is how it would kind of spark. In KOTOR game some of the red sith light sabers could be built where they would have other properties like emitting sparks to burn their opponent or shoot sparks into their face.

Heck yeah! Most of us in the Saber Legion use two-handed hilts. It works better with the maximum length of the sabers we use: 51”. Some people use a one-handed style that is more like a fencing stance whereas the two handed styles resemble broadsword or kendo.

I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned in earlier comments. Baylans belt buckle looks like a kyber crystal tied on with some thin metal.

A little off topic but when I heard HK series droids are now canon in Episode 2, I was really hoping to hear a droid exclaiming his expression before speaking like "Statement:", "Condescending remark:", or "Inquiry:".

I would think a Kolon crystal would produce a brown blade.

I wonder if notice that Ahsoka is aware of Baylans differences. When he charges at here she does a partial leg split planting her foot against a wall behind her. This would keep her from getting overpowered by him.

I thought it was Obi-Wan style because of the way he blocks blaster fire. It's the same way obi Wan would block... Also I noticed something after this video... The first episode was called Master and Apprentice, the book where Obi-Wan has the orange blade is also called Master and Apprentice... The fact that our introduction to Baylan and Shin was essentially a dark retelling of our intro to Qui Gon and Obi-Wan... THE THREADS OF FATE NEVER LIE

Partial bleeding makes sense to me. Baylan still wields the same lightsaber he used as an initiate, which makes it Kyber. Shin may actually be wielding another Jedi saber and was taught how to bleed that. Overall, with all the references of the Old Republic (and High Republic?), it seems like Filoni really does have something in the works. I didn't know Lucas' original plan was for something similar to Claymores. That implies that he has a great respect for George's original vision, as well as a fascination with written books and comics.

Baylan uses the weight of the blade for speed, as he does not have the speed due to his age. Shin looks to me like she can go two ways, a smaller shoto like ahsoka or a bigger and heavier hilt. Her body structure is similar to ahsoka when she was a padawan so I’d guess another saber.

Perhaps he can adopt HEMA, and for the first time in star wars history have real swordsmanship that is functional and efficient!

I think the orange blades are pretty straightforward as to why. I think it's because they are not Sith. Not Sith nor Jedi so it wouldn't be fully bled with all the hate if it's not a sith so it wouldn't be crimson red.

My thoughts about episode 4, I've heard nobody mention... Ahsoka lost the battle in order to send Sadine. She already knew Sadine's choice was to not destroy the map. Was she truly wanting the map destroyed? No. She knew there was another route. Watch as Ahsoka is on board dressed in the armor of the one we thought could have been Ezra. This would fit in many Star Wars patterns.

The Light Foil and a Great Saber. Love it!

You brought up Darth Treya. Those two games, Kotor and Kotor 2, taught me that you can't make everyone happy and shouldn't even try, especially people whose respect you desire. Be yourself. Let others be responsible for themselves. You would think I had learned that when I was much younger.

Didn’t the Jedi Temple guards wield orange lightsaber staffs? And I’m pretty certain that bot Yaddle and Plo Koon wielded orange blades at some point.

It's an interesting side note a month later to recognize how much Baylan is dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge relating to the force and answers including a dedicated student of Jedi history. In this video alone while we are all fixated on a hilt of a light sabre (also considered to be fashioned to resemble a relic from a bygone age) the close up images show that Baylan is wearing onyx jewlery (belt buckle and ring) that is inlaid with gold in a Kintsugi fashion, just like Thrawns Storm Troopers who have repaired their armor and even Thrawn's Start Destroyer in this way. If I had to guess, the jewelry Baylan is wearing is thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years old, and likely of either Night Sister or Zeffo origin. Just a thought. Thrawn had never met Baylan, he simply struck a deal with Morgan. It's clear now with only one episode left that even if Morgan and Thrawn think they are using Baylan, he clearly has a much bigger agenda then getting paid by them. He's found something old, that most anyone else would not recognize that calls just to him on this planet, so old that it's influence in his galaxy is long forgotten but is clearly still very alive in this new one.

I hope his hilt and blade are actually gonna be shown as longer and heavier when fighting like a montante, it would introduce the idea of different lightsabers having to be used differently not just every lightsaber being able to be wielded with one hand.

I enjoy the way they used the different styles of lightsaber combat. He uses Form V, similar to Darth Vader, using overwhelming power to beat down an enemy, while Ahsoka uses a much more defensive style, similar to Obi-Wan.

So far…my favorite “new” characters are Baylan and Sabine. Baylan has such a cool presence. A great “replacement” (if you can call him that) for Jorrus C’Boath (if I spelled that correctly)

This makes me even sadder that Rey Stevens passed away and we won't see him as Baylan anymore ... unless they kill off the character in this season ... heck - even in that case.

In Legends, lightsabres were powered by ilium crystals named for the only planet they came from. Feloni is slowly bringing legends back in to canon. IIRC Ganner wielded a yellow bladed sabre and Lowbacca’s blade was orange.

perhaps Baylens sabre is more akin to the EU Corran Horns sabre and have variable blade length setting, given filoni's attachment to legends

I don't know about others but personally Baylan's style reminds e of Vader's from the original triology where he would use techniques more associated with Zweihander and larger swords and then mix into it a quick cut as if holding a Katana. Note his tight defensive stances where he keeps his blade 'on line' with his attackers and don't deflect them back like you do with Shii Cho and other styles. It's for sure a purely aggressive stance but not purely Juyo. He's sort of found a nice mixture of the two styles of passive defense but a vicious sweeping cut. Though let's also give some credit to New Republic Troopers that they aren't much of challenge to a man who presumably shrugged off the Clone Wars. Baylan likely has fought droidekas and more just since leaving the Order. Shin's style on the other hand is very erratic changing up her grip constantly and she took more time to bounce bolts back at her foes though like her master was more about closing in for a quick finishing strike. Also note when she's fighting Sabine she wasnt feeling threatened which is why she went for a skewer that didn't target organs. Which is something we should address: Baylan says he wants to find Thrawn to gain power but also emphasizes to Morgan he doesn't want to kill her. It would in his words "A great loss. There are so few Jedi left." Which not only 100% confirms they aren't Sith but all but states they are Greys who have their own philosophy for attaining power. AKA Dark Jedi. Though I don't think they're a sect so much as what they show us in these two episodes: survivors. They aren't in this because they believe in the Empire or Thrawn they are here to obtain more power and live. Honestly I'm not just impressed but applauding their evolution. Between the Clone Wars and the Empire hunting them down more Jedi should feel as betrayed and the need to do what they must to survive. There is just one tiny detail bugging me. Who is Morrok? Why are they working with a Sith Inquisitor? Why does that Inquisitor have a name and alliance but still bear their bled blade? Episode Three is going to have to answer some questions here.

What if Baylan's master was Qui Gon Jin and he's not the big bad?

Most Jedi appear to be fencers or variants there-of. Baylan acts, looks and fights like a Knight.

The Baylan long hilt makes sense if you fight two-handed like a katanna.... It's nice to see he has a proper katanna grip! Many actors hold a two-handed sword like a baseball bat, with both hands close together on the grip. Which lacks the leverage needed for powerful cuts... :)

that orange-red lightsaber crystal reminds me of those crystals from SWTOR, specially those cored crystal.

I dunno how many ppl remember or if it would matter, but it may be worth noting that in Star Wars Galaxies an MMO from 2003, there were one handed, two handed, and polesaber skill trees with some different moves/animations, and styles, I never thought about it much before, as i think it was seeming to stray from canon at times, but just thought it was worth noting, and loving the Nightsister stuff because I spent a lot of time on Dathomir and loved the wildlife there in the same MMO Axkva Min battle, the NS strongholds, lots of fun.

3:08 Their blades crystal is the ones that they were both given/found as when one bleeds their own crystal it has an orange effect more than red due to it being THEIR crystal. All red blades we see are not the users crystal but a crystal that the user stole from another to then bleed it and bend it to their will

Actually she did faced form 7, because Anakin while not an expert in that form did use it when he trained Ahsoka, not to mention Luke also trained in all of the Jedi saber forms and could have possibly at some point trained with Ahsoka prior to the start of the Mandalorian

I like the long hilt lightsaber. It is a design that faded away because it made the llightsaber a larger target, but it allowed for more space in the hilt for more tech/features in the lightsaber.

Normally have a Mando passion, but a Knight/Mando mix would probably be my favorite. I’d definitely rock a hand a and a half saber! A one or two handed weapon…plus kyber or baskar shield! I just got done watching the first two episodes of the Ahsoka show and as someone who never really watched the Clone Wars animated show, I found this show Done quite well and the writing was very good and definitely more instep with George Lucas's vision of how Star Wars is supposed to be.

The EARLIEST Orange Lightsaber is used by Baron Orman Tagge in the Original SW /Marvel Comics. It was constructed by his Brother Silas, HeadScientist of Tagge Corp. Tagge is NOT a Force-User, but pretty skilled with it, as far as a mere swordsman can be, i guess.

In ep4 now, we saw that Baylor uses form 4 Ataru. And if he would have used Juyo, I want to remind you that Ahsoka fought Maul in Clone Wars, who was a form 7 specialist. Thanks for the video!😊

You are mistaken about Jedi Survivor orange saber in so many levels. First, the orange in the fist game is not really canon, it is just a game feature for fan service. second and this is more a fact than an opinion, the saber you described as being used by a bounty hunter, is not the saber of the bounty hunter, is the saber of Dagan Gera, that bode stole after Cal placed in his chest as a form of respect after his death. And it is red. The art direction from fallen order chose to portray the red color more orangy to give a sense of the old VHS movies when the tapes were unstable with color information. they also choose to make the blades all look unstable almost as kylo ren. IDK why they did such a poor decision, but you can see the damage already. You can understand this better after you see darth vader fighting against Cere and his saber is also "orange". The inquisitors as well. I was a lame choice from someone inside the job that thought this changes would be cooler and ignore consistence.

i hope that these possibly new lightsabers and fighting styles and crystals will bring more variety of melee weapons to star wars, maybe in the near future we will see a lightsaber version of a spear or a pike

Baylan Skolls lightsabre also has the same sound profile as Darth Vaders lightsabre. I noticed but idk if it is significant.

Everyone gets caught up in the different Jedi lightsaber forms. But you've all forgotten the important part of being Jedi. Through the force, the force can guide you and adapt to any form regardless of training in any specific form. A Jedi flowing with the force in combat is more formidable than someone just going through the motions of any particular form. The force, we need to get back to the force.

Filoni and Favreau are running Star Wars now. One is literally George Lucas' apprentice and the other is a giant nerd. I think we good going forward.

Baylan seems to be very conservative in his style, but innovative in his approach. His fighting is beefy, but not unrestrained. I think his point is iterations on the known to find new paths, not accepting arbitrary restrictions and traditions, but taking what he finds useful. Nuanced in every way.

It's possible that we're all overthinking it, and the difference in Baylans lightsaber that made it relatively unique is that his was the first in a thousand years that was built to be a weapon of war rather than a tool of peace

Ahsoka has gone up against Juyo before - Maul was a Juyo practitioner if I remember correctly.

This is my hope. There is a battle on what the Force means, and I am on the side that is against Lucas himself. The force is based on Taoism, but it was always implied the dark side equates to evil. In Taoism, dark and light are equal, and neither represent evil, but rather the imbalance is the issue. Notice what Qui Gon stated. They want BALANCE in the force. Not to defeat the Sith or dark side. The smartest Jedi, was suppose to be Dooku. He trained Qui Gon. Ashoka was my hope to explore this, because she left the Jedi, because she knew they were flawed as well. Remember , also for Fallen order and survivor, that Merrin is a night witch and a dark side user, but she is not evil. Remember what Obi said, from a certain point of view. Well, the story is told from the Jedi's point of view. But they do stuff that we would be appalled, like taking away children too young to decide, to become Jedis. I want to say this. WE know Dark side is represented with hate and anger. But that is not the whole story. What it really is, is Passion is a dark side emotion. Jedi are forbidden to love. But we generally see love as being good. If you understand, Love and hate are not opposite. It's indifference. Love and hate are both parts of Passion, which Jedi's are not allowed to show, they are indifferent. They can not favor one person over another . Also unlike the other star wars, the villain is not a true villain, and is described more of an Antihero. He isn't fighting so much for dominance, but for order. I believe this show should be about balancing things. Order with freedom. Not letting Passion run amuck. Also, Ashoka is not part of the sequel trilogy, and we do not see her taking part in rebuilding the Jedi. I want to see her break away from what Luke was doing and start examining the Gray Jedis.

I know its not gonna happen. But I fantasize about the maw of the space whale opening, and ahsoka seeing another star forge as revans theme kicks in. I would literally jump out of my seat and cry tears of frenzied ecstatic joy.

im surprised that i havent seen anyone point out that shins lightsaber is Kanans from rebels. the emitter is mentioned when ezra was making his new lightsaber that huang only had two of that type of emitter, and shin has the same emitter as ezra.

Im hoping the change will end up being the use of more historically acccurate swordplay. I noticed a few real guards being used in Ahsoka, including (Vom) Tag (High guard, over the head), plow/longpoint (point forward), and neben (blade held in a forward grip with the point facing away from the opponent, held low) (in german). Because of convergent evolution of sword stances toward a few useful stances, these all exist in other cultures too. For example, Japanese sword stances include these. In the same order, Jodan, Chuden, and Waki. Using realistic stances allows for much more fluid combat sequences that require fewer cuts to make look good. Realistic sword combat is incredibly fast paced and looks amazing.

Kohlen crystals sound like something painful

Using Mike saber hilt as a sort of figure printing system also puts a new spin on inquisitors light sabers. They don’t have the original light saber. They have one that looks like everybody else is in it takes away their individuality while concealing their identity.

I like that they finally mention different time periods like Republic, Empire, different fractions etc....they don't ignore whole history like in new movies. I wish to see some force users who can use dark side abilities (like lightning) but they are still more good and can controll their dark side, something like Kyle Katarn in games, that would be cool. Denying dark side is reason why everything went to shits and why jedi failed and why even Ahsoka fails. You can't fall into dark side when you already use dark side I guess. These 2 new force users are very interesting, you can see that they don't have sith yellow eyes and they still can think clearly, they are not those crazy rage dark side users as we saw before, but they are obviously more dark than light, I want to see someone who also uses dark side but who is slightly more ligh with more jedi lightsaber color or one saber red and second green or something, that would be cool. BTW, I how Balen will bring Thrawn back and restore order in galaxy, there is such a mess in galaxy now. 😀

I think the style of combat for this heavier lightsaber will be closer to the crossguard stance in Jedi Survivor where it's incredibly strong, powerful and slow swings with an extremely powerful block with the main intent to be overwhelming the opponent with a strong brute force.

Just a thought..... But in the "olden days" there was a few jedi that used a long lightsaber. Like really long: 2-3 meters. What if his Lightsaber is made to fight in a similar way.

I donno why people hating on it so much.... I kinda enjoyed it... Someone had mentioned Baylan possibly using a different type of Crystal, but arent the Orange Sabers Orange because they have been Corrupted by the dark side. and when Red you are fully Dark... I could be wrong. didnt know there were multiple Crystals they can use..... Like In Jedi: Survivor when Dagan Bleeds his Crystal . Cuz arent their stories of Repurposing Crystals. Like as a Jedi you can Repair them back to the light, or as a Sith they can break them and bleed them causing them to go Orange and Red.

Baylan Skoll appears to be wearing Obsidian on both his belt and a ring, and from Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities we know Obsidian can be used in place of a Kyber Crystal to produce a red effect. I wonder if the orange is Filoni's spin on how to differentiate a corrupt kyber crystal and an obsidian shard being used. It also implies to me that Baylan has been to at least one place filled with Obsidian, which is the mirror cave that Rey visited, or more probable, Vaders fortress which was made from Obsidian, and may be the way that he figured out Anakin was Vader.

Do to use massive side and strength it’s likely he chose a larger and heavier hilt design to take advantage of its weight in power strokes much the same ways vaders lightsaber hilt was designed to take advantage of his strength by making the hilt heavier and thicker

Obi wan used it but it’s stated multiple times in that novel that it’s weaker than a kyber blade. It’s specifically useful in that situation to match the cholen shield resonance and pass through, but not able to duel with a kyber or synthetic kyber blade. It was also interchangeable with obi wans blade configuration meaning there was no reason to make The hilt heavier. Nor did they mention the cholen crystal itself being notably heavier

Ahdoka has lots of experience against juyo, she has fought maul more than most

One of the cooler aspects of Fallen Order and that series of games is finding out what happened to the Jedi that survived Order 66. Really, the only ones that stayed as Jedi were Kenobi and Yoda. Everyone else either hid or stumbled around until they found other power sources. I hope they lean more into that aspect of the Star Wars mythos.
