Me too, I still have my OP 8 Pro, because I wanted to try out Android for a long time, coming from the walled ecosystem. The 8 Pro was hard- and software wise the best phone I could imagine. TLDR, I'll switch back to iOS again this fall. Don't really like Apple as a company, but their phones are solid and iOS is really reliable imo.

I've been hoping for a while now that we see a return to form. Owned a OnePlus One and have probably gotten over a dozen phones purchased for them via recommendations and my own purchases. While I still love some of their devices and their original philosophy, we've seen many moves astray from it. Really hoping they can indeed focus so we can all go back to cherishing that one special brand.

I've had my OnePlus 7T hang up by itself when I dialed 911. Imagine trying to explain to someone who is injured that you cannot dial 911 because your phone has some weird glitch and needs to restart while they are laying on the floor bleeding with a dislocated shoulder. Needless to say, that was the final straw after a long series of unusual or weird glitches with my OnePlus. This could have actually killed somebody.

You either die a hero... well, you know where this one's going. It's amusing how LMG videos had lots of OnePlus sponsorship a week or two ago, and now we have this video exposing how bad the brand has fallen (I actually like this move, expose brands regardless if they were/are a sponsor or not. Keep it up, LMG).

I've absolutely loved my OnePlus 9 pro but it took months after launch to finally have many of the simple bugs I had issues with to be fixed. I didn't have issues with the storage dumping but I had issues with so many UI, texting, calling, and maps features. I've waited it out now and I haven't run into many of those bugs I used to have in a while. I definitely love the camera and OS of the phone with the fast charging and super responsive screen I will probably stick with my OnePlus 9 pro for a while. It's not like new mobile processors coming out are outperforming the snapdragon 888 significantly and charging is surpassing the 65w. I was an extremely happy OnePlus 3T user for over 5 years and I just recently changed it for a Pixel 6. It was an excellent phone and it represented the peak of OnePlus in my opinion. They did make a few great devices after it (the 7 series was a standout in particular) but the truth is that every single iteration from the 3T onward moved them more towards generic mediocrity and further away from the reasons many of us loved the brand in the first place. Remember people, brand loyalty is never a good thing. Always get what suits your needs. There is no reason to go down with a sinking ship just because you used to like it in the past. Goodbye OnePlus.

I recently got my hands on the OnePlus 9 and it was only because I had only one very precious game that could not save on cloud and it was on my previous OnePlus 7T. The reason why I needed a new phone was because of only 2 issues. 1st was that my phone was basically locked away from at&t's servers because they made a change that was like "we only support 5g phones now" so I wasn't able to call or use mobile data. but the 2nd issue was much worse. My very first softwire update just broke the phone. It takes ages to start the phone from a restart, It was overheating much faster, and worst of all, when I was gaming say like on Brawl Stars and I had my left thumb on the screen and moving it was all right but when I wanted to aim and shoot my movement is just dancing across my screen and it didn't allow me to move until I got my finger off and then it would work, just not for long though. same thing was actually with when I want to type something, it just types for me and clicking characters that aren't even close so that it could be mistaken as a typo.

I've been pretty sad to hear about all of these issues. I'm still rocking my 7 Pro and honestly, I have not experienced a single of the issues listed. I am glad I seem to have caught their last "good" phone, so to say. The motor pop-out front camera is a blessing for a person who takes no more than 3 selfies per year such as myself. It's been the main reason why I've been hesitant to even plan on changing my phone, since I refuse to give up screen real estate (with a notch or punch hole) for a camera I will never use. Disheartening to hear that this may no longer be the sole reason why people like me should hold back on buying a new phone, though.

My 9 plus is just shy of unusable, especially with each update, which has broken the direct contact shortcut, the direct text shortcut, the silent slider, the screen rotate, and triggering speaker phone and mute buttons. Meanwhile, sporadic issues with fingerprint registration, answer buttons failing etc. I submitted cases after each issue and just get canned responses where they want the same information (which we know they have anyway) and completely ignoring the fact that there are hundreds of others posting and reporting issues.

The only minor drawbacks are that there's no wireless charging and a software update added an annoying "accessibility options" shortcut that I can't remove and keep accidentally pressing. Apart from that, it works like a charm and I have no plans to change it any time soon. Edit: I just managed to remove the accessibility options menu. It seems that OnePlus likes making the least optimized stuff they can make now... Still, they absolutely trashed the 7 Pro's battery life with updates. It also turned on in about half the time that it takes for it to turn on now (even while completely brand new software after a factory reset). It's sad, but I'm keeping mine lol. I Just got the battery replaced with an original by Oneplus's support, it was a nightmare dealing with them, they kept my phone for two months, broke something while opening the phone and tried charging me for it lol. fun fact: OnePlus started with a cooperation with Cyanogen Inc. (known for CyanogenMod) and they actually made the software for the OnePlus One, called Cyanogen OS 11 based on KitKat. But OnePlus initially broke up with them due to the bugs and issues, Cyanogen Inc. wasn't able to fix in time (or at all) so they hired devs from the formerly Paranoid Android team and created OxygenOS. Seeing them getting into the same mess makes me wonder, if anyone from the initial OOS devs is still around in the company. OnePlus once was known for stable, clean and feature rich software that had many great stuff from custom ROMs. So basically the custom ROM, that isn't a custom ROM. Very sad. Seems like the last vendor who cared about customers also no longer cares about anyone but themselves and the good old days of custom ROMs also are over due to the restrictions google had been making the last few years ( SafetyNet for example). So nowadays you can choose between a bloated, messy OS or an clean, fast, free and lightweight OS, that can't be used for online banking, doesn't play netflix in HD and so on. The big issue here is: LineageOS comes unrooted out of the box but since a bootloader unlock on modern devices can already break certain things, it's almost impossible to enjoy. Old devices will not suffer from this but google just implemented hardware assisted detection routines for an unlocked bootloader on more recent devices. I think i will just use my OnePlus 3t yet another year. Sadly, google made sure old devices with anything before linux kernel 4,9 will no longer work with Android 12 (at least RIL = mobile data, sms, calls as it seems) so people are actually forced to upgrade their hardware, unless there are devs who take the huge effort to backport the whole stuff needed by android 12 OR port a newer kernel which isn't easy either. So yeah there you have it.

Kind of heartbreaking. My dad got a OnePlus One back in 2014, telling me that it was considered to be the best phone in the world at that time (flagship killer and all, I guess). That's what introduced me to the brand. He ended up upgrading and gave me his OnePlus One, and looking back, it was absolutely among the best phones I had. I was 15 then and have stuck with OnePlus ever since. Even my brother has noticed my commitment to the brand and, despite all the changing trends, I've stuck around because I just really loved what OnePlus was doing. And now I'm worried that my next upgrade is going to have to be something else. The timing of this video is crazy for me because I've been thinking about this a lot lately as I recently factory reset my OnePlus 6T because I had so much useless material on it and it was getting unbearably slow and almost impossible to operate normally. My dad recently upgraded to a OnePlus 8 Pro and says he's really liked it so far, but I told him that a lot of what I've been reading is that OnePlus has really dropped the ball over the past few years and that my phone, the 6T, was basically their last really good phone. Thankfully, after my factory reset, I can see my phone lasting me at least another year or two because I don't care an awful lot about having the latest phone hardware, but I hope that when that point comes, OnePlus has cleaned up its act and gone back to what made them such a unique choice back in 2014.

While i still love using it it's reliability and responsiveness has deteriorated. I still use it to this day as OnePlus have done a great job in providing security updates after the android 11 upgrade but the slowdowns and the log dumps filling up the storage was preventing me from using it in crucial times. My 5 cents to this is that as long as OP released phones once or twice a year, we were in better hands, as the devs only needed to support a limited number of devices. Now when they have two versions of the primary phone, plus the T models, at least two? versions of Nord and then some Asia only models, it's getting wild. So, as Linus put it, they need to focus! If they want to have a phone in three different price groups fine, but maybe leave it at that. Three phones per year is enough. Apple is doing at least this one thing correctly.

Apple releases 4 models a year and throw in an se model but are a way bigger company and have been used to optimizing older devices with newer software (for better or worse). Just moved from a OnePlus 6T that I loved to a new Google Pixel 6a. Did NOT consider another OnePlus (such as the 10 pro or 10T) because of bugs I had for about a year after the 6T's final update. The bugs in my case were: Pocket mode stopped working, had to turn it off; Auto brightness became untrustworthy, also turned it off; the camera would almost always hang then crash several times before I could use it. The first two issues were relatively minor and can be worked around but the lack of functionality was missed. But the camera issue was really bad with no workaround either resulting in a lot of frustration waiting to finally be able to use the camera or photo opportunities completely missed. There were apparently a lot of other bugs left unfixed in this final update that other users experienced that I did not. So I can see why so many decided to roll back to a stable build of Android 10, install a custom ROM, or buy a new phone like I did.

Have the original OPO still working and wondering what I can do with it at this point. I did install Lineage OS on it a few years ago since it just runs really well with it. I also have an OP 7 Pro, sliding camera ribbon cable broke, OnePlus wanted to charge an arm and a leg to change it, solved it with a $25 camera off ebay and about an hour to spare to open and replace the part. I did have to install a bunch of different operating systems to narrow down the issue. The worst part was that the even though the front camera was dead, it also made my back camera stop working and caused some weird system instability problems. This also happened to happen just as I had to do an emergency trip to take care of my dad who was getting a kidney removed. In my panic, I bought a OP 10 Pro which works very very well, and I'm impressed, but I wish I had the chance to wait just 3 more days to buy the upgraded memory and storage for the same damn price, heck the phone hadn't even reached me and they put that thing on discount right there 3 days after I purchased the base 10 Pro (this really annoyed me). Given that I had to travel and I needed a working device to work remotely, I bit the bullet this time, but OnePlus' practices have become dodgy in every sense as of late, if Samsung had priority shipping I was ready to just purchase the S22.

Owned the OnePlus 5T which had an audio firmware issues they've never acknowledged, a 6 and 7T Pro but ultimately switched to Samsung despite hating their old OneUI. The onplus 5t was the most flawless phone i have ever owned, got 3 years out of it. No software bugs whatsoever, extremely responsive, top of the line specs, a headphone jack and quick charge too. And for half the price of most of the other brands flagships. This was stock, no root or custom rom required. If they just made that exact same phone again with modern specs, sd 8 gen 1 or dimensity 9000, updated camera, faster quick charge and maybe 120hz i would buy instantly.

I took the Pixel 6 back to the store, and they told me that several customers complained about the same issue. The store offered to exchange the phone, however, the Samsung S22 was not available, so I opted for the OnePlus 9. The only issue I had was that the unlock sensor would not recognize my fingerprint at times, the problem was remedied in a future update. Ended up buying a Realme GT 5G (the cool yellow one) by the same price of my OP5 back then. Thank you for covering this. My dad wanted to buy a Oneplus too (I had a 6) and bought a Nord. He literally couldn't call because the microphone would auto-mute itself during calling. When I googled it, it turned out that this has been an issue for months. We have bypassed it by installing another dialer app. The screen on it is extremely soft, too. He had it for about a year now, and my OP6 (no screen protector, no case) has like 4 times less scratches than his. I have used a Oneplus 6 for over three years, in this time, the screen brightness sensor practically did not work, the Android 11 update literally bricked it, having crashdump mode, no recovery, no nothing, had to use a leaked unbrick tool. Then I just installed a custom ROM and used it until the battery got real bad. The OxygenOS, then an ideal system, got so buggy and bad with A11 that I can't even tell you. Even with these issues, it's a phone I remember greatly. I loved it and would use it for forever if I hadn't ran into battery issues, simply due to aging. Right now, the only "flagship killer" I could find that satisfied me was funilly a Samsung, the S21 FE I got for ~480 USD on German amazon a few months ago. And Oneplus is trying to fight it with the same phone but for 650 USD. Funny, how the initial flagship maker now makes flagship killers, and good ones, too. I am actually sad and disappointed with OP, I thought that this would be a real, enthusiast flagship killer brand that would exist for longer than just a few years. Seemed perfect, almost too good to be true - and it turned out to be.

When I first got my hands on 1+1, I knew that this is gonna be something great. A bit later they launched 3T which I preordered. Absolutely loved the phone. I had 0 problems with the software or anything else really, and it was super cheap compared to other phones with similar specs. I then preordered 5T when it came out. Didn't need it, the 3T was still working fine but I wanted to support OnePlus and also get the little bit better camera. Everything after that didn't intrieve me so much, so I waited. Then came the 8 pro. It was definitely alot more expensive, but my 5T's fast charging stopped working so I decided to upgrade because of that, and also for the much better camera and display. Both the 3T and 5T I've handed out to friends to use and they are both still working fine. Even the 5T fast charging started working, not sure what was the problem. I'm still using the 8 pro but I'm gonna need a new one soon. The battery life has decreased significatly and I have weird bugs where the phone judt freezes for a while. When I lock the phone and open it again, it works fine. This happens pretty seldom, propably once every week or two weeks. Rarely more than once in a day. It's not because of any programs, because sometimes it happens even in home screen when just unlocking the phone. I loved OnePlus because it NEVER froze on me, had pretty close to 0 bugs and everything just worked like it was supposed to. I had an iPhone and Samsung flagships before that and they all had freezes, poor battery life etc. Didn't think OnePlus would ever be like that but I was wrong. My next phone propably won't be OnePlus unless they get their shit together.

I've had my one plus 6t for a few years now and I still love it tho over the years more and more small annoying issues have been popping up, the most recent one for me was the phone refusing to play audio after disconnection Bluetooth devices, with the only way I know to fix this to be resting the phone, as well as the camera app refusing to open occasionally. It's nothing major but having to restart my phone every time I know longer want to listen through my earphones is a pain.

Hey Linus, are you saying that something is supposed to happen on your cars gps screen from your phone? is that how android auto works? (i dont have a car...out of the loop) I mean, I would expect my GPS to be in my car... or if i had a phone, id expect to need to have it on and active versus being at the lock screen where apps are idled.

About loosing access to apps while rooting; there's quite an easy workaround for that. In Magisk you have a DenyList setting, and although hiding root from GPay became slightly harder (mostly the problem of the device not being certified in the Play Store) it's still quite easy to bypass.

As it stands for me so far, I'm on board with Sony for the next phone whenever my S10+ dies or becomes obsolete. Only phone that still offer 3.5mm jack on new models and flagship model, and it's just comfy to hold as it's a 21:9 screen.

I had a 6 for quite a while, but I upgraded to the 8 when AT&T was dropping their 3G and the 6 wasn't on their list of devices that would be unaffected by the change. I've been happy with it, but I don't think I'll be continuing with OnePlus after this phone unless they change some things. I almost didn't even go to the 8, but I managed to find it on a serious discount that brought the value of it back in alignment with my penny-pinching sensibilities. I'm hoping that by the time it finally dies, there will be a device in my budget with at least similar, if not better, specs. Right now, anything that I look at within the price I'm willing to pay doesn't measure up in specs. I shop like it's a computer. Processor, ram and storage are my big necessities. Cameras don't get used much, so almost anything is good enough for me these days, in that respect.

An issue I'm running into on the OnePlus 9 is that messages I received from other people will delete for no apparent reason. As well as my fingerprint scanner to unlock my phone will sometimes say that I moved to fast or that it was wrong.
