What American Pie Tells Us About the Power of Nostalgia

On April 6th, 2012 American Reunion was released in theaters and was a modest success. At this time it’s the last true film in the franchise and it will most likely remain that way.
The American Pie franchise is both a collection of films that reignited what was believed to be a dead genre while also being a problematic film in a variety of ways.
Teen Flick enthusiast Matt Kelly breaks down what it is about this franchise that makes so many millennials (including himself) more forgiving to these films than almost any other poorly-aged film and how nostalgia has the power to put blinders on us sometimes.

Kevin’s line from the second movie; ‘We’ve got 12 weeks of immortality ahead’ - that encapsulates what I love about these movies. Even living in the UK, they just take me back to a time when I could have been anyone and gone anywhere. Not mention it was the golden age of pop punk! Brilliant video my dude ❤

Same. My senior year was the same year as when it came out and my life was basically exactly like that: talking to my buddy about girls all the time, going to house parties on the weekend and hoping for something to happen, having one specific crush, etc

I was born in 04 and i still love these movies and find them so nostalgic, it still to this day represents the awkwardness of being a teenage boy, and i somewhat wish i was a teenager in the time this was set, the bittersweet punk songs just make it feel so loveable.

Born in 99 and I feel the same way. I definitely shouldn’t have been watching these movies at ages 8-12 but me and all my little buddies who are were almost all the youngest of are siblings vicariously lived through are older brothers imagining that are high school/college lives would be just like theirs. Nope, oh how wrong we were. Unfortunately my high school (2014-2017) life was not the same as theirs. My teen years is pretty much the start of an era where everybody’s face is stuffed into a cellphone and the political correctness got out of control. I truly envy you guys that grew up as teens in the late 90s to early 2000s era. In my opinion, the perfect time to be a teen.

I will always prefer American Wedding over American Reunion. Here's why: There is a point to why Steve Stifler got to be a main character of the movie besides the popularity of Seann Wiliam Scott. There was clear intention of character growth for Stifler with the introduction of a (not far fetched) character, Emma Frost (I mean January Jones). At that point (and age of its characters) it is believable that Michelle got a not mentioned sister who's coming now to the wedding (you move out of your parents' home and then you make a visit). She and Jim are the reason why Steve Stifler changes at very end and even decides to be with her (Handled well? Not my argument). Now what is American Reunion doing? The writers of that movie couldn't possibly follow up on that (even though they could) because Stifler is still the selling point to these movies SO they intentionally RESET his character to where he was during American Pie 1 & 2. Also, I don't like the inclusion of Dania Ramirez, the "school mate from the past" who's there exclusively for Finch. Choose some of those actual actresses who appeared in the first two movies and even had dialogue (there're some). And the hot neighbor, yeah same thing.

My ratings for the american pie main films would be... 1. American pie. Simply because if it werent for this film, we never would have gotten the rest of this franchise. I remember id maybe seen the previews for it once or twice and that was it. I believe we ended up ordering it on ppv and i laughed like ive never laughed before that at a movie. 2. American Pie 2. This actually might be better than the first, but i put the original ahead because without the original there would be no 2. 3. American Reunion. I loved this one because when it came out i was out of high school for several years and seen my old school friends transition from party animal to successful careers, weddings, babies, and buying and/or building their first house. I really related to it when i watched it 4 or 5 years later. 4. American Wedding. It wasn't the greatest film, but its good for a laugh or 20. Thats what we look for when watching comedy films, so mission accomplished, i guess. All in all, this is the greatest franchise in movie history, in my honest opinion. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane, bud.

My ranking is exactly the same, I think American Wedding does have the weakest jokes and most misfires overall but like you said, it's still a very watchable comedy. Not counting the direct to video movies, it's really impressive that a comedy franchise with 4 movies has two great movies, one good movie and one very watchable movie. Out of all the genres, sequels to comedies have the toughest time and like 90% of them are really bad.

Mostly agree although I tend to put 2 slightly above part 1 just for how much I watched it when it came out (it was also the only DVD I owned for the first month of being a DVD owner haha)

Great video. As I rewatch these series over the years I have come to many of the same conclusions. These movies are absolutely a time capsule of their time and I think that alone is a treasure. Reunion is a shockingly good finale to the series, and I hope they leave it at that

There's not really a teen movie imo that did such a good job capturing how things were as a teen in the early 00's. Between the clothes, the music, and over all feel good vibe American Pie nails the period perfectly. I live in South Jersey and the neighborhoods and the people in the movie are almost captured perfectly. Btw I remember Q102 too lol 😅 I didn't really listen to the pop stations (other than the war of the roses that Q102 would do and the bus driver would play it over the speakers). I liked Y100 when that was around b.c. hey played the popular rock music of the time, Unfortunately they went away tho :/

The movies came out when I was in high school. Stifler was by far such a big influence - so many people copying his mannerisms at parties. Guys always seem to be looking for male role model and it was definitely all about proving you're not gay and can get with women and insulting others who couldn't and questioning their sexuality. The culture of American upper middle class is so attractive to everyone world wide.

Great analysis of the series. I have the exact same feelings about it. In my humble opinion you still can make a raunchy comedy, as long as it's heartfelt and not meanspirited. This year we got movies like Bottoms and No Hard Feelings. Both were pretty good in adjusting this format to modern standards. Also audiences are getting tired of dull and safe content. I truly hope one day we will get another legacy sequel to American Reunion. We could get a movie about Levenstein's kid(s) in high school. It could be both a satire on modern youths as well as a criticque on late 90s/early 00s reality. We could get more of a bitter sweet drama, American Funeral or American Divorce. Options are there, it's all a matter of good exectuion. Cheers!

Great video. Every now and then I rewatch these movies out if sheer nostalgia. Deffo agree that the wedding is the worst one. Oz's absence was felt through the whole movie and upping Stiflers screen time was not a worthy replacement.

Oh the movie soundtrack, how I miss thee. You can't talk 90's movies and especially 90's teen comedies without talking about the soundtracks. They were just as important as the actual film. Closest we've come recently are the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks or Edgar Wright's Baby Driver. As much as they're an intricate part of the stories, they just don't have that iconic status you get with any of the films you mentioned. The soundtrack has gone the way of the mix CD. Not completely dead but no longer a mainstay of modern pop culture. Side note about American Pie, I saw the first AP film AND the South Park film in the same day. I was barely 19 years old. Best. Day. Ever. Holt shit was Sean William Scott's Stiffler performance in American Wedding soooooo far over the top it's embarrassing to witness. It's peak cringe. Great video Matt, thanks for sharing.

Can't Hardly Wait was a decent movie but I think Dazed and Confused and Clueless really kicked the door open in the 90s. American Pie for sure did bring back that R rated Porky's or Revenge of the Nerds style R rated politically incorrect teen movie back. It's sad that these movies wouldn't be made today because I can laugh at characters doing awful things in movies because it's just a movie. The same liberals that are offended by these movies say nothing about John Wick killing 87 people in a movie. It's just a weird mindset that they have these days.
@GeekscapeTV
@GeekscapeTV Месяц назад
So I don't disagree with Dazed & Confused and Clueless but I think the issue when I was writing this was that they came out in 1993 and then there really wasn't a big teen flick again UNTIL 1998 with Can't Hardly Wait. After that we got a pretty strong 3 year run of 2-3 big teen flicks every summer. But you're absolutely right that I shouldn't have discounted them when writing this.

Really enjoyed the video and a couple others I've seen from you so far, but I do have one small piece of constructive criticism. When you aren't using clips and instead you are on camera yourself, try to remember to make eye contact with the audience. It feels strange when we can see you starting at the script the entire time. The occasional glance is fine, but when the audience cant really see your eyes throughout the entire video, it is a little off putting.
@GeekscapeTV
@GeekscapeTV Год назад
Definitely noted and yeah I'm really forcing myself to get on camera more. The early videos you'll notice were all VoiceOver (at least for me... Matt... specifically). It also doesn't help that my vision is dogshit and on a teleprompter like 6 feet away so I definitely know the next one I'm doing I'm putting the script much closer to me and the camera. But yes this is something I've seen in editing and off-putting is the perfect word to describe the feeling I get noticing too haha.
