Think SPEER GoldDot 147gr or 124 gr. OR FEDERAL HST 147 or124 gr. Hornandy too. Basically, all of these are top notch.

I hate to be critical, but E=MV^2. E=MC^2 is Einstein's theory relating to nuclear energy where C^2 is the speed of light squared. For calculating the energy of a bullet, V^2 is the velocity, usually in feet per second.

Kinetic Energy = 1/2 Mass times Velocity squared. I'm pretty sure Einsteins theory of relativity (E=MC^2) does not relate to bullet Energy calculations. A bullet at the speed of light (C) would not be a bullet very long....

Yeah, when mass is converted into pure energy (like the mass is gone, and in its place energy, like in an atomic reaction) the amount of energy released as a result of the destruction of mass is mc^2. KE is the key in ballistics.

If you're running a smaller carry pistol like a compact or subcompact that has a short barrel, you really need to run +P ammo if you're using hollow points. There's been a lot of debate around whether calling them added pressure is actually warranted, since manufacturers rarely share how much extra pressure your rounds will actually be expending when fired, but it's been pretty consistently shown that on average +P expanding munitions perform significantly better in shorter barrels than standard non +P rounds do. You really need the added pressure in order for the bullets to expand correctly upon impact when fired from a short barrel; without it, you run the risk that the bullet's mass-to-velo ratio won't be adequate enough to result in proper expansion. Hornady Critical Duty +P 135g is what I use in my EDC (G43X), just as it's the choice of the FBI and countless police departments across the nation. Ballistically, it's one of the best rounds on the market. The red filling material used isn't actually there to assist expansion necessarily, as was said in the video. It's actually there to prevent early expansion, which is one of the biggest issues with hollow points when someone is wearing heavy clothes. This is especially bad in the winter of course, when people are wearing thick layers. Hollow point rounds without fillers expand too early and lose a ton of their energy as a result, whereas with the filler (what Hornady calls Flexitip, though other brands surely have their own proprietary materials) the bullet is able to rip through any initial layers without losing as significant of a percentage of it's energy before expanding.
@DavidLLambertmobile
@DavidLLambertmobile Месяц назад
I agree that some guns, sizes can affect ballistics but in general you are looking at a ccw/defense range of 3ft to 21ft. Also the pistol or revolver round will need to punch thru around 16-22". In 2024 many people are larger, thicker than the 1960s 1970s 1980s.

When considering self defense and not ballistic gel or water jugs, one must factor clothing penetration before it hits tissue. I do not think the “Pilgrim " would perform good, especially if a perpetrator is wearing fairly heavy clothing. Federal has "Punch" and "HST". HST is designed to penetrate clothing before expanding in tissue. Any thoughts?

The pilgrim would still penetrate enough and even if it just hits below the skin the energy dissipation will impart enough of a shock to let the receiver know that s/he's been hit by a sledge hammer. That's my totally unscientific guess.
@bobmotherfuckinsmith3089
@bobmotherfuckinsmith3089 Месяц назад
Clothing makes negligible difference. If we shot one time that'd be something to consider but when a defensive incident occurs the average shot rounds of 5.5, so 3 on the low end to 8 on the higher side spread across 60 percent of 100 percent for those accounted. If people carry .22 and 380 for defensive ammo then I'm sure any hollow point 9mm will do just fine. Remember Velocity is squared. External deviated hollow points like the APX interceptor rounds at 65grn are going 1600 fps and blow water melon apart.

I'm surprised to hear Lenny come to that conclusion. That pilgrim ammo is dumping most of its energy in an incredibly short distance, a distance in which other studies would say is much too short to be reliably incapacitate. There's a reason why LE agencies do not use any of the many gimmicky hyper-velocity ammo types, they don't prove to be as effective. This is such a surface-level understanding of pistol ammo and terminal ballistics, it's actually very surprising to see it demonstrated here on this channel. Lenny, I'd refer you to one of several podcasts that Hornady has done on this subject, it would expand your knowledge greatly to hear from guys who do legitimate scientific testing.

Sorry but that Pilgrim ammo didn't go anywhere near the minimum standard for the FBI test. From personal experience, the HST was probably the best ammo out of the ones you "tested" and the second would probably be the golden saber. There's two other rounds that you should have tested and that would be the Gold Dot and the Xtreme defender or Xtreme penetrator from Lehigh defense. Most law enforcement agencies nowadays are using either Federal HST or Gold Dot... There's a reason for that... Also, most defense attorneys will advise you to contact your local law enforcement agency and carry the exact same ammo they carry so prosecutors and attorneys don't try to "nail you to the cross"

Here's something most people fail to realize, all the energy is NOT dumped into the target when the bullet stays in the target. I know that statement contradicts what you probably believe, but some of the energy is actually dumped into the bullet itself and not the target. The hollow point expanding requires energy to expand and that energy used to expand the hollow point is dumped into the bullet and NOT the target. So even though you might have calculated a bullet has 350 ft lbs of energy right before it enters the target that does not mean the bullet dumped all 350 ft lbs into the target because some of that energy was lost making the bullet expand. Because some hollow points expand using up less or more energy than other hollow point bullets you can't make any claims that 25% or 30% energy was lost in bullet expansion unless each hollow point bullet is tested to calculate the actual energy needed to expand the bullet.

Hey length talk about the angle of the bullet on hollow points because it's well known that glock has had recalls for feeding issues. Sig ammo was one of the worst not sliding up the breech ramp, the bullet was digging in and jamming. The critical defense ammo has a better angle and works.

I was thinking about that with my 1911, it doesn’t like hollow points because of the feed ramp. But I found some new ammo that is still the shape of FMJ penetrates like FMJ but then it spins over end doing more damage than any hollow point I’ve seen… that’s my go to for the my Kimber custom shop ultra cdp , they make it 9 mm so you shouldn’t have any problem with feeding… it’s called TUI, tumble upon impact…. So if you’re having feeding issues, I’d give it a try..

The water jugs and gel blocks, I have heard but do not know, are good things for comparing penetration depth of different bullets, but are bad for measuring real amounts of penetration. Because they are consistent in density (and so good for comparison), they are radically different from real targets (with clothes, bones, muscle, etc.).

Aside from lack of momentum and penetration, the weight savings for the Pilgrim round is insignificant. Assuming carrying it in a G19 with 16 + 1 rounds, it saves 2.7 ounces over a 124 grain bullet. Not the best of reasons for choosing a self defense round. Make that up by carrying less change or something.

I would like to see a match between the Fort Smith 9MM SUB-MUNITION® TUI® - 125GR AMMO and the Speer Gold Dot Carry Gun 9mm Luger 135 Grain ammo. That would be a great test. I have both for my Glock 43X EDC as well as the Hornady Critical Duty and Critical Defense.

Lenny, were you ever a DJ on the radio? Your voice sounds like a guy we used to listen to in the early 90's, here in Atlanta. He was nationally syndicated and known as the Grease Man.

I was listening to The Greaseman in high school in the mid '80s when he was in DC. His skits would get banned so fast on RU-vid now but I'd love to kick back and laugh again at all the verboten jokes.

Lenny buddy I love this channel a lot but you need to look at the "TODAYS" 9mm velocity! The speed of the common 9mm has increased since the 80s and 90s. They use to match or come close to the .45 but its faster then the common .45 now. The 9mm usually has the speed and the .45 has the punch "weight". The typical .45 is subsonic but the 9mm isnt...

Fiocchi XTP 124 grain uses Hornady bullets at a significant cost reduction. Used in my M&P Shield Plus with a 15 round magazine. Oh, and did anybody else notice that the firearm used with the Pilgrim 50 gr was different than all the other brands fired?

The equation for Kinetic energy is KE = 1/2mv(Squared) where "KE" is kinetic energy;" m" is mass and "v" is velocity squared.

I actually kind of like what the light weight frangible rounds do. It I had kids at home, in different rooms of my house, I might seriously consider them for my home defense pistol. At this point in our lives, it's just me and my wife in our home, so we're loaded with HSTs. I wouldn't want to be hit by any of these rounds, though.

NOVX is still the all-around winner in my book!!! Lol check it out, it's not cheap but it's a barrier blind polymer that stops once introduced to hydro shock, that's "dumbed down" but you get the point Haha

I carry Hornady Critical Defense and always felt that was about as effective as it gets. I have to say though, Pilgrim does appear to be a great alternative.

I understand that the reason that some of the manufacturers place a synthetic cap on their hollow point bullets is to prevent premature expansion, I could be wrong. I would have liked to see the effect of the fluted bullets where the bullet is not jacked and made of a solid piece of metal, usually an alloy of copper or brass.

Liberty Ammunition also carries a similar round. Civil Defense. 9mm +P 50 gr. at 2040 FPS. I’m a big fan of this ammo. I actually don’t mind carrying an extra 19 rd mag or two with my 19X! 😂

Underwood 68 grain Extreme Defense. Penetrates the same through gel no matter the barriers used in the FBI tests. Denim, wallboard, sheet metal and windshield glass. Tim at the Military Arms Channel tested it and switched to it years ago. That Pilgrim ammo needs to be more thoroughly tested. I bet it wouldn't do so well against some of the barriers. And even in bare gel it looks like it only penetrated 8-10 inches. The FBI requirement is 12-18.

In a locale where there is minimal clothing, ie resistance, the 50 grain might be very acceptable. However in areas where a med-heavy jacket/coat is necessary, the penetration will be insufficient to yield an attackers' incapacitation.
