Here's a cute sound design technique that results in odd arpeggios: play several notes at different BPMs and find places where they phase in and out of sync.

As long as the hihats work you're golden. Now, trying to mix a track with off grid hats, that's a completely different beast.

You can place them all on the 1. They will shift since they have different tempos.

There's an analogous thing going on in Dan Deacon's - Learning To Relax (Official Audio) RU-vid video but not with the sound... it's with the visuals! Out of phase stuff leads to all sorts of weird effects (bit like the Moire Effect) and patterns in that video so it's nice hearing the audio-version of that idea here. PS for anyone wanting to see Dan's video please read the disclaimer in their 'Description'

Love this. So much so I'm nicking the idea, I'll have a massive hit with it, make me world famous, then I'll probably mention you in my grammy acceptance speech, the worlds press will go wild at me for it and then I'll be back to the day job. Cheers for the brief moment of fame though.

Thanks for showing us this simple but effective concept. Never thought of trying that out. Today I want to showcase two tracks with creative use of white noise: “Black 8 & Arrab - Sandwaves” and “Stephan Bodzin - Boavista”.

You can observe this phenomenon on the car indicators on the opposite side of the traffic lights. For a few moments, all the indicators will blink in unison and then slowly fall out of fase.

Thanks for sharing Oscar. Did you implement this by manually shifting the notes over after some time in ableton? Or some tool to arpeggiate and change the rhythm speed?
@agit5270
@agit5270 5 месяцев назад
The easiest way probably would be making the desired arpeggio, consolidate it, change bpm, consolidate till you get it
@OscarUnderdog
@OscarUnderdog 5 месяцев назад
Write out an arpeggio on the grid in ableton, then grab one of the notes and midi warp stretch them (i included a little screenshot of it too :))

I find tempo control techniques and creativity around tempo variations are poorly covered on RU-vid. Maybe because most of the time it does not fit to DJ grid requirements. However so efficient in lives
