The thing with the Billie Eilish album is that, in an effort to be more eco friendly, they were actually more wasteful. Having one standard run of a quality pressing is far less wasteful than 9 poor variations that can't be properly enjoyed. They might as well just melt em down now for the next recycled album.

Yeah, it's really unfortunate.

Bring Me The Horizon’s new album is up for preorder and the colored variant is on ecovinyl but they are also offering a standard black pressing that is not recycled. I ordered the black pressing. At least they give you the option!

Got 4 copies of a GVSB album that used black eco vinyl, sent them all back. They looked terribly scuffed all over.

The ecomix LPs are just another grab at more profit. I remember many years ago the record companies used recycled vinyl to press LP's. These LP's were no cheaper and did sound worse. Then the record companies released LP's on virgin vinyl which of course carried a higher price. Eventually they stopped the recycled vinyl records, but prices remained higher.

I have the Liam Gallagher - John Squire EcoRecord LP and don't remember any sound issues with it. From the manufacturers web site..... "The new Liam Gallagher and John Squire joint album has been released by WMG as its first sustainable EcoRecord. While this is the first official EcoRecord, others are also manufacturing “green” vinyl. This LP was manufactured in orange using recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) instead of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as the base material. No natural gas or steam was used in the production, according to manufacturer Sonopress, reducing the environmental impact of the manufacturing process by up to 85% compared to the conventional method."

From that description it sounds like a different product than ecomix vinyl. It sounds like a similar product to other "green" vinyl products on the market that aren't made of PVC, but are a PVC-like material without many of the more environmentally harmful elements. Ecomix vinyl is just fully 100% recycled vinyl.

I found out a while back that all the different coloring agents used by vinyl manufacturers (the chemical companies that make the vinyl itself, not the record pressing plants) have slightly different specs. Some melt at higher or lower temperatures than others, & of course there have always been different vinyl mixtures that affect sound quality in various ways (going all the way back to 78's, when some companies even went so far as to put stuff like *sawdust* in their shellac to build up its available quantity.) What ecowax needs in order to maintain audio quality is for each of its constituent components to be of similar specific characteristics - so long as all the recycled bits are compatible PVC formulas & the colorants have similar melting & remelting temperatures, they'll sound good when mixed together. Pressing plants need to hire actual chemical engineers to get this process right & it'll take a while for that wisdom to percolate through the industry - if they even let it spread, anyhow, instead of guarding their learned experience as a trade secret. Le Sigh. Capitalism.

Ecomix definitely has the ability to sound good, but like you bring up there are variables involved that I don't think pressing plants have properly accounted for, and this is probably what's to blame for the inconsistent sound quality. Another thing to take into account is that plants give a price break on using recycled vinyl, but that price break isn't passed on to the consumer.

Is it a different composition to the bioplastic used for Shellac's - To All Trains?
@TheVinylDen
@TheVinylDen Месяц назад
Bioplastic is different than ecomix records. Ecomix is just recycled PVC, whereas Bioplastic is an entirely new product that doesn’t contain the environmentally damaging gases and chemicals, while still being similar to PVC.

I read a bunch of bad reviews for the new Billie Eilish record, so I decided to just stream it. I don't want to drop $35 on something that doesn't sound good.

I find it interesting that you’re actual comparison from your own experience proved no difference between “recycled” vinyl and non-recycled (the rancid album), but because “online” debate about Billie’s album has been negative, that, more so than you’re personal experience, indicates recycled vinyl is bad or too risky? I don’t think you’re conclusion was fair since the Billie album seemed to be exclusively pressed on “recycled” vinyl and there isn’t a “regular” version to compare to that was pressed using the same hardware at the same plant. I think we need more information. I, as well have several albums pressed on “recycled” vinyl that sound great, no surface noise more than “non-recycled”, but I do have albums that have 20+ music on one side pressed on “virgin” vinyl that does have surface noise, or other sounds quality issues. My guess is QC in general is the culprit regarding Billie’s album, more so than the “recycled” vinyl but since we don’t have anything else to compare it to, this idea that recycled vinyl is worse is probably “inconclusive”. You might be right that “recycled” is worse but I don’t think you proved that in this video, would you agree?

I have the new Billie Eilish on black Vinyl French Pressing - not on eco Vinyl - and apparently it’s the only version that sounds decent (as mine does) compared to the noisy eco-variants
@TheVinylDen
@TheVinylDen Месяц назад
There is one version that wasn't pressed on ecomix vinyl, and while still not sounding great (which could mean that some of the complaints could have more to do with how it was mastered), it has far fewer complaints than the eco mix versions. As I said in the video, I don't think that just because it's pressed on ecomix that it's going to sound bad, but it does seem (according to reviews of other ecomix pressings than the new Billie album) that it's far less consistent than standard pressings.

@@TheVinylDenI hear what you are saying. But, when I first started collecting in 2017 I heard the same complaints regarding just “colored” vinyl in general, that it “always” had a lot more surface noise than black vinyl. Now this is the case “sometimes” but it was never consistent. I don’t think we should get too alarmist about eco-vinyl at this point with only 1 release of many that may possibly have an issue that may not be related to the eco-vinyl itself. Staratovarius-Survive, Contrarian-Only Time Will Tell, Slugdge-Gastronomicon and Born of Slime, these are just a few “eco” vinyl presses I have that sound great IMO. I fear that jumping to a conclusion too quickly on this topic will cause a panic that might not be warranted. Especially since the ONLY album you have tested yourself does not have any indication that it being on “eco vinyl” has diminished its vinyl pressing sound quality (the rancid album). I even mention in my March Vinyl Pickup video where I show my Stratovarius album that it’s on Recycled vinyl and sounds great. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qN8y_egzxSY.htmlsi=fJIO7PjIuridFEKJ

I wish she would have released at least one variant on standard vinyl, just to see if it were the ecomix causing the sound issues or if it was just the mix of the actual album that’s the problem.

They aren't made the same way. They're made out of recycled material.

@@tubinonyouWhich is the exact same material that was used to make the vinyl record the recycled material came from. Is there part of this process that where the recycled material is “changed” in some way?
@TheVinylDen
@TheVinylDen Месяц назад
It would make sense that it would sound the same as standard pressings, but there's clearly something different. It could be something as simple as the recycled PVC being heated a second time that could be causing some of the issues, but there's something causing a more inconsistent sound when compared to standard releases.

Hello Sir, I Visited your RU-vid channel and noticed it ranks lower than others. SEO is lacking, though your content is fantastic. Do you know why your videos aren't attracting more views? One key factor is insufficient SEO (your videos' SEO score is 64/100%, that's why your video is not reaching out to the people and you do not have many subscribers, views, likes, watch time, and comments. I can help you improve it 80-90% if you'd like. I think your RU-vid channel will make your dream come true. I am waiting for your response.
