This is episode 8 of the Modular Synth 101 series I've been posting on Mondays. This episode explores what gate and pitch signals do within the synthesizer. I demonstrate them with a keyboard and also with a sequencer.

Thanks for that comment. The response to this series has been mixed. A small amount of my viewer seem to really love it but they have pretty low view counts. However, if even one person learns something from my video... I call that a success. There's a couple more episodes to come.

Hi Kale. My intro to gate/pitch was when I got a Baby8 and APC from Rakit a while ago. I'm not much further on but this is all very relevant to a current project. What I'm wondering is this - is the CV for picth standardised? So if you press a middle C on that keyboard you'd expect the sound to be exactly in tune. If you took the pitch signal and put it into something else, would you also get exactly a C and is there a standard written down somewhere for exactly which voltage represents which note on the scale?

There is! The 1V per octave standard is what most synths use. So 1/12V per semitone. If properly calibrated an oscillator should produce a C at every even volt (1V 2V etc). However I’ve honestly found this to be relative in practice. But the standard remains. If you tune all your oscillators to the same base note, they should all track the pitches.

@@musicalmiscellany Thanks Kale. Do you happen to know what the expected voltage range is with cv? I've measured my Rakit kits and they seem to give a max of about 7v. That sounds about right as 7 octaves would roughly be the sensible musical range. Could it 'potentially' (haha) be higher or is that the expected max?

@@midi_in It gets a bit confusing because the standard responds to negative voltages as well. So if you had a -5v to +5v signal, that would be 10 octaves of pitch CV (provided your oscillator could even track 10 octaves - and even if it could, the oscillator would have to be tuned to dead center with 0v to fully track this). There are some oscillators on the market that can track 12 octaves (or more) but most can only handle about 3 or 4 with any accuracy. So yes… you can easily get outside the oscillator’s range. Check out this link. learningmodular.com/matching-octaves-in-your-modular/ they understand this much better than I.

@@musicalmiscellany It seems that it's the relative change that's more important than the actual voltage. Thanks for the link.
