Fact 1: Gyroids are based on artifacts of the dead. Fact 2: Gyroids in Animal Crossing clearly have some level of sentience; playing to music and, in some cases, speaking and holding minor jobs. This implies they have souls. Fact 3: Brewster has Gyroids made in his own image--which, despite him being very much alive, are still animated. Conclusion: Brewster is making horcruxes.

Some Haniwa were made from terracotta mixed with the ashes of the dead, sometimes these were servants or warriors’ ashes and it’s believed that the soul would become trapped inside the Haniwa so they could protect the burial mounds of high ranking people

In my tribe, pottery is placed on the person's grave who's ashes where used for the clay so they can have eyes above the ground to continue watching the world change, sorta keeping them from being bored for all eternity.

I'd always found it rather morbid that Japanese would repurpose 'graves' in this way- nice to have some insight on this. Still feels weird when you consider Gyroids as sapient, and especially in the Kirby anime where the cappies are a replacement for people in a sense... 👀

Oh yeah I’d forgotten about that in the Kirby cartoon! Definitely weird!

I’d like to point out that the ones that look more like pots with the circles around them are very similar to Bendoids!

Thank you for this! An excellent explanation of the origins of gyroids. I created a kofun on my island where I’ve been placing my gyroids and where I also put my museum.

Haniwa show up a lot in Japanese video games, the first time I saw them was in Final Fantasy Legend II, where they're incredibly strong enemies in the final area.

True story: I just made Julian a vacation home and I gave him a heavenly throne room with a choir of gyroids. It never occurred to me they were burial statues. I use them like little cherubs 👼

Gyriods are based on Japanese haniwa (clay figures buried with the dead.)
