What are Lag shields? What are expansion shield anchors? How do they work? These concrete, brick, and block anchors raise many questions, especially since they look different from most typical anchors.
Let us help you answer some of these questions so you can determine if lag shields, otherwise known as expansion shield anchors, are right for your project.

A note about lag shields, make sure to use the same brand lag bolt and lag shield. Mixing brands might lead to a mismatch in thread pitch, which is sub-optimal for how lag shields work. (Apologies if you've already mentioned this in the video, I forget!) A pro or con to lag shields is how wide they are. For example, a 1/4" lag bolt can work with either a 5/16" DuoPower anchor or a 1/2" wide lag shield. When I recently redid the fasteners holding the steel railing to my stone porch I ended up using a mix of both. For the holes where the old #14 screw came out cleanly, I hammer drilled to 5/16" and used the plastic anchor. For the holes where the #14 screw was rusted through and thus half remained inside, (EZ-outs failed, so) the only way I could get it out was with a 1/2" diamond hole saw; for those holes I used a lag shield.

Always blow out the concrete dust out of the drilled hole in the concrete before inserting the anchor or sacrifice some holding power. A simple rubber ball hand blower works great.

I swear the only thing I use my air compressor for around the house is blowing out a drilled hole or some area I've just scraped off with an oscillating tool! Prior to adding a fastening, reapplying caulking or adhesive, etc.

@Sovereign_Citizen_LEO
@Sovereign_Citizen_LEO 3 года назад
That depends on the size of the Lag Shield and Bolt you will be using for your application. I.E. - They come only in specific sizes and they are usually short (no more than 3+ inches for the largest Lag Shields).

Your best bet for anchoring into brick would be a double expansion anchor. You can see that in action here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4e9dQO8bLmI.html

If these are block walls and are filled solid with concrete or the walls are concrete this will work. If these are hollow block walls this will not work and could fail. Or you can use these in a hollow wall: www.albanycountyfasteners.com/kaptoggle-hollow-wall-drywall-anchors-p/5804-008.htm

Are these leg shields removable? I know the bull is obviously but is the shield itself also removable or will that shield stay in the concrete forever if the lag bolt is removed? Thanks
@graciehelenmason
@graciehelenmason Год назад
In my experience (on a very old farm with old concrete etc), yes, the shield is removable because once you undo the bolt, it will release the pressure and the shield will pop out. On the other hand, a concrete anchor would not be removable.

Do these work in cinder block concrete masonry units (CMUs) or should they only be used in regular concrete?
@AlbanyCountyFasteners
@AlbanyCountyFasteners 5 лет назад
A good question! It could only work in cinder blocks if they are filled in. Trying to use a lag shield on hollow concrete masonry units runs the risk of cracking the brick. Regular concrete, or filled in CMUs, are the ideal applications for Lag shields.
@EarthshipFreedom
@EarthshipFreedom 3 года назад
@B C great question. I hope they answer this. Im guessing an expansion anchor from my research. Cmu can crack pretty easily, i was even think about a high quality screw type anchor as not to put too much stress on the cmu. I believe a cmu can potentially still crack even if filled in with mortar or concrete.

Would these work in asphalt? If not, what would you recommend? What do transportation authorities use for anchoring road fixtures-- "cat eye" road reflectors for instance?
@AlbanyCountyFasteners
@AlbanyCountyFasteners 5 лет назад
Asphalt is a lot more yielding than concrete and any expansion anchors, such as lag shields and wedge anchors, that require constant pressure on the sides of the material they are being fastened are not advisable for use in asphalt. It's difficult for us to make a solid recommendation on what kind of anchor would work best for you without knowing what exactly your application is. Most things fastened to asphalt are typically either fastened to concrete beneath the asphalt or have a hole cut out and then grout is used to bond the item to the asphalt (most cat eye road reflectors are installed this way).

I want to put a half fence on top of a cinderblock wall. The cinder block wall has a layer of concrete on top. I want to mount a 2 x 6 "baseplate" for the fence frame. Should i use the lag shield or the double anchor? I am thinking to throw some epoxy in the hole also. Also the sides of the fence(about 16 ft length x 3 ft high) will be supported at each end

The lag shields would be best for this application. Just be sure the lag screws are long enough to get through the 2x6 and the lag shield. A washer would probably a good idea to use as well.

Looking for something that can be permanent but reusable. For instance, I want to use a pop up canopy in my driveway when working on cars, so i need to anchor it down. Can't use stud type anchors because i don't want to be driving over pieces of metal sticking up out of the ground for obvious reasons. So i need something like an anchor well that I would leave in the ground, set up the canopy, bolt down and then be able to unbolt to take down the canopy and leave the wells until next time i need them. (Of course reinserting the bolts to ground level to keep debris out of them) Would these work for that purpose? Like a permanent anchor with intermittent use.

Hi, perhaps I misunderstood but shouldn't I drill a hole that is slightly longer than the lag bolt instead of the length of the lag shield?
@graciehelenmason
@graciehelenmason Год назад
I know this comment is 2 years old (but maybe others will benefit) and I certainly could be wrong about this, but I think at that point you would want a longer lag shield that covers your entire bolt. And then drill the hole to be slightly longer than the shield. I don't know the exact significance, but every source I find says that you want to drill a hole slightly longer than the shield.

Great video! Would this work on drywall? I'm trying to bolt a power rack in my garage, what would you suggest on a drywall application
@AlbanyCountyFasteners
@AlbanyCountyFasteners 5 лет назад
We are unsure of what a "power rack" is. A quick google search shows workout equipment. If this is the type of thing you are referring to, it will be too heavy for drywall. We recommend anchoring it to the studs. If they aren't spaced properly, attach the "power rack" to a board first and then attach the board to the studs with lag screws and washers. Lag shields should never be used in drywall; they are intended for concrete applications. The image below is what we used to make a recommendation: www.titan.fitness/media/catalog/product/cache/8/thumbnail/1000x1000/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/f/o/folding.jpg

@AlbanyCountyFasteners
@AlbanyCountyFasteners 5 лет назад
Hi sMiLey Warrior! We do not recommend using these in brick. Brick is a weaker material that can break from use with this type of anchor. We recommend using double expansion shield anchors. Double expansion shield anchors expand on both sides to provide a strong hold while evenly applying pressure. This prevents the brick from cracking. www.albanycountyfasteners.com/zinc-plated-double-expansion-shield-anchors/1044-002.htm

Not a one time use but where it can be use to attached tooling to a concrete floor but can be removed when not in use and at the same time does not present a tripping hazard? Any ideas?
@AlbanyCountyFasteners
@AlbanyCountyFasteners 4 года назад
There are actually a few types of anchors that can do what you are looking for. Drop-In Anchors and Machine Screw Anchors work in the way you describe where they are inserted into the concrete and then a bolt is used to fasten down whatever you may be fastening. When the bolt is removed, the anchor will be flush with the surface of the concrete. You can find a selection of these types of anchors here: www.albanycountyfasteners.com/anchors/acf_cat_anchors.htm?Per_Page=144&Sort_By=bestsellers&f_product_type=Drop%20In%20Anchors&f_product_type=Machine%20Screw%20Anchors I would also suggest looking into Sidewalk bolts to see if they may work better for you application with their enlarged heads.
