Are licensed Floyd Roses REAL Floyd Roses? Why does everybody think they suck? Are they ALL BAD?? Well, they kinda do suck, but not all of them! Thats the point of this video.
Floyd Rose allowed select companies to use their patented design. Some made a good trem, some didn’t! Watch the whole video to find out!
I think the real differences will surprise you!

I have upgraded my licenced Jackson Floyd Rose with stainless steel saddles and Schaller's tremolo arm. The total cost was less than $50 and made a huge difference. If you're not a heavy tremolo user but would like to have an option to use it every now and then, I think that this is a solid, affordable option to consider.

I have a Floyd rose special and it’s flush to the body with dive only. The only problem I’ve had with it is the bar broke on me at the collar and I had to crudely use another bar and that works just fine. I recommend you look to make sure there is no crack in the collar piece if you have one because that ultimately led to the failure of the bar

Believe it or not, but any Floyd, cheap or real one, comes down to maintenance and setup. My favorite trem is the Original Edge from Ibanez which is made by Gotoh. I’ve also bought $15 trems from eBay and after a little work, they can perform just fine.

@@galenmarek8287 No you are exactl;y right, when I first bought the Jackson I own I had the same issues, wouldn't hold tune, never back to the same place, then I discovered they have screws on them and they loosen up with vibration (and they aren't tightened very well at the factory, especially the intonation screws). So I learned to set one up properly and check the tightness of my screws when I change strings and viola, never had an issue with my trem ever since (I have had this guitar since 2003). I have even refretted the neck (one or two individual frets were all I needed). Learn to set your spring tension properly (trem plate level with body), your intonation properly addressed, and your action at the height you want then all you have to do is maintain, I haven't touched mine in years (except for the OCCASIONAL loose intonation screw, it must be the vibration there, as these are the only ones that loosen up on mine)(and if they start to strip BUY NEW, they sell replacement screws and most parts for these trems)

I would like to throw my two cents in. I'm not a fan of everything they do, but Guitar Fetish sells a few very good vibrato units. They have a couple of "Floyd-oids", one of which is made of steel with a brass sustain block. I've bought two of these and went with the full Monty install on one of them. Sparing you all the gory details, these vibes transformed the guitars that got them. Longer sustain, improved tone, and higher volume all came with the transplant. ALSO coming with the transplant was significantly greater weight! Those two guitars started out light, but have become some of the heaviest guitars I own. Not knocking the product, but anyone considering it should know about that issue. Hasn't stopped me, but I'm working on a guitar with great tone and sustain, but is light enough for long-duration stage use. No, I don't play out, but I wanted one, so I'm working on it. While I'm on the subject, my light stage axe is a Jackson with a hockey stick headstock and a large amount of string displacement from nut slot to tuner. This impacts tuning stability badly, and I want to be able to use the 2-point vibe freely. Does anyone have any ideas for a solution?

One of the best Licensed Floyd I have is on my my 2002 Bc Rich Mockingbird SE. I have no idea who made it what it's made of but it's lasted better than the 1000 Series that came of my 2004 Warlock. The other Licensed I like is on my late 80s Bc Rich Bich with a screw in bar. It is a bit worn on the knife edges but I love it's feel, I have a work around for worn Floyd's anyway.

The best licensed floyd rose of all time is the Ibanez Edge. For some reason, they don't have to disclose the license anymore, but it's still a licensed floyd. Ibanez is genius in that they only used the hardened steel on the replaceable knife edges which were later determined to be so strong an so rarely replaced, they stopped selling them separately..... but the rest of the trem is of a much lower grade metal as it's just not neccisary anywhere but the knife edges.

Not all are bad. Many are though. (not happy to admit, but if some werent so crappy it wouldnt make us this fixated on it...wich is a plus. Discovering truth from what we're lame compensations. Kinda like JDM people so passionately do...after buying their dreamcar the first things first, is to detect all the components wich the manufacturer had to compensate on, and make it a mission to replace those with high-end materials. How did Honda remain so victorious? because they delved deeper into whatever mistake("sin") there seemed to be. :) See how science actually removes sins, offers those to dissolve in the bright lights of truth. :P

My Jackson Soloist came with a FR Special and in all fairness, it worked well for about 3 years. Then strings kept popping out of the saddles. I went through 5 sets of strings in 3 months. No matter how hard I tightened the lock screws, the damn strings kept popping out. After researching this problem online, I found out that this is a common problem with the FR Special. I replaced it with an Original Floyd Rose(Schaller) a couple of weeks ago and so far I've noticed a few things. Everything seems to be much tighter and solid now. Also, with the FR Special the Trem arm would constantly unscrew itself and would start rattling around while I was playing. I would have to re-tighten it between songs. With the OFR, I don't have to do that. The Trem arm stays wherever you want it. One other major difference is after I installed the OFR my guitar got much louder. It's like someone turned up the gain on my amp. I think that has to do with the OFR's sustain block. On the OFR it's made from nickel plated brass. On the Special it's Zinc alloy.

I ordered a licensed FR tremolo bridge for $18 on Amazon, which included an R2 nut. The nut was junk and the screw threads on the E lock stripped in an a couple of days so I spent $40 on a real R2 by FR with no issues. The FR nut is clearly much better. The bridge, on the other hand, never had an issue and feels nice and chunky. to keep it in tune I use the Fender Tremsetter, which works like magic. I also made a flat steel support plate for the bridge screws which gives it a rock solid stability. The licenced tremolo is a great deal for the money. Naturally the German originals are going to be the best but for the money the licensed is not bad at all and works great.

I’m now waiting on a 32mm FR brass block, and the Tremsetter pull rod needs to be repaired. Different dimensions to the trem itself, but the string spacing and saddles are all the same measurement. Your largely getting the same trem with the same zinc alloy/cheap metals. The special is really floyd roses competition with cheap licensed trems. Does that answer your question my man?

Often the best solution is to sharpen your existing knife edges even on cheaper units and make sure to lube the pivot points where the base plate's knife edges meet the posts. If you have an oddball sized licensed floyd and HAVE to replace it, sometimes it's unavoidable.... you have to fill the existing post holes with dowel rods in glue and drill new post holes. You should always replace the posts when swapping bridges, they often get chewed up by the old dull bridge. Good luck!

Hello! Double action floating bridges, my unfinished business... I have an old guitar from the 80s that had a Schaller floating bridge. But it's a French guitar, a Vigier that was designed to play jazz fusion jejejejeje. The system is bad because if you lose tuning, you have to adjust it in the nut with an allen key. Very impractical. The guitar has become a restoration project. Then I have a very economical guitar. I think it's a local German brand, Rocktile. It has a licensed floyd rose bridge. It's pretty bad. But I have managed to maintain the tuning, with the springs very tense. Microtuning sucks. The threads of the screws or those of the holes are very hard and irregular... But what is going to be asked of a guitar that cost me 145 euros ...? Finally I have a Korean Squier pending restoration. I want to conertir her in a kind of Frankenstrat. I thought about putting a cheap floating bridge on it. The prices of the original Floyd Rose are prohibitive for an old and cheap guitar hahahahaha. Maybe I'm the one who has no remedy... Hahahahahahaha Regards.

I’ve switched to Edge Trems and there is no going back to Floyd Rose!!! I will say that I have 3-4 new Jackson’s with licensed FR and yes the quality is low but they aren’t as bad as a lot of people say. Many of the issues with new Jackson entry level guitars like the JS and even X series is in setup. There are tons of complaints about the licensed Jackson FR bridges not returning to zero. 95% of these problems are caused by Jackson adjusting them too low. Simply raise the bridge about 1.5-2 full turns and it will work fine.

The older Jackson Japan made jt580 and jt580lp both had hardened steel baseplates/knife edges. The jt590 in some higher end Japanese guitars like xl and Pro were Schaller made. I have a jt580/jt580lp/Floyd Rose Original and Special versions as well as a Schaller Lockmeister. Personal favourite is the Original but they have ALL held up well. The only thing I would do is change the cheese metal used for saddles on a Special rather than change out all the trem. Zinc is generally used as non base materials. Just avoid the junky fakes/unbranded stuff you see on auction sites.

Gotoh

@@nikaxeguitar Not all. Gotoh makes the Edge and Low Pro Edge. The others including the still used Edge zero and Edge zero II are contracted out. Original Floyds are not what they used to be .... and way to expensive. I still use my old 80's -90's Floyds and they have not worn out yet. All my newer guitars have been swapped with Gotoh 1997 Floyds. I think the issue is Schaller is getting their steel from China like everyone else is now days. Because making steel destroys the environment ..... except in China. Because Chinese air stays over China. Since 2016 though I don't even know where Gotoh is actually manufactured. Japan gets a lot of their stuff done by Chinese companies also.

the belief that zinc alloy is a material that should be avoided, is just not true, just as much as the belief that all "licensed" trems are crap. Zinc alloy as well as the common name "stainless steel" are both generalized terms, and do not accurately represent the possible quality of the represented metals. Stainless steel is also an alloy, it is not a homogenous metal, it is made up of multiple different metallic elements that give the finished steel its's specific properties. The zinc alloy used in many different industrial applications as well as in guitar parts is also made up of multiple elements that give it its characteristics. stainless steel and zinc alloy both have varying grades of quality not only in workmanship and finish, but also in material purity and the forging process. good quality zinc alloy is actually very sturdy and is highly resistant to corrosion and wearing out, not as sturdy as a high quality stainless steel but, i digress. Zinc alloy is a great material to make a tremolo system out of, you just have to understand that metals benefits and weak points and how to avoid upgrading your guitar with parts made of harder metals or "upgrading" it with softer metals. when using a floyd rose special trem made of mostly zinc alloy, don't upgrade parts that are constantly moving or going through a lot of friction with stainless as the new part will want to wear out the zinc alloy contact surface. When i upgrade my FR Specials i typically will go with SS saddle blocks, SS string locking screws, SS nut locking screws, and SS saddle locking screws. This type of upgrade cuts down on destroying your zinc alloy components that are designed to rub against each other, while also giving your stationary components the ability to remain rigid even under high strain dive bombs or fast spastic squealing maneuvers. last but not least, there is such a thing as stainless steel trems that are total crap. You can also cause the same issues in a stainless trem by upgrading high friction parts with titanium parts, which are the most common upgrade from stainless.

I appreciate the comment my friend! Interesting perspective.
@FulcrumsEdge
@FulcrumsEdge 2 года назад
It's not really a perspective as much as it is a statement foundationally rooted in metallurgic principles. I studied and researched the principles that pertained to the the alloys used to making trems as it is/was critical to help me understand the overall function and reliability/stability of the trems I so often work on.. I also learned these principles the hard way on occasion, ruining trems in the process, but also benefiting and saving trems that others would consider good only for the junkpile... Regardless, I can say from experience that these are established principles of science and engineering and the basic gist of my original comment, will hold true about as a perfectly made double locking trem, zinc alloy or not.
