Actually there is a frog called the ghost frog and it is called that because its skin is transparent, so you can see its organs joints and bones and heart at work. Freaky looking, but interesting.

Pokemon Variations are now canonical in Gen 7, with Alola forms of classic Gen 1 pokemon.

i think the ghost frogadier might be based off of a type of frog called the Glass Frog

The problem is a lot of the pokemon's typing's would change as well.

I Would die a liitle inside as i attempt to catch all pokemon... say 5 different variations, not counting around 50 Legendary Pokémon and 54 starter forms 3085 different pokemon

Gamefreak may not be able to do variations, but I think maybe we can get a Pokemon fan-game that is based around variants. The Pokemon community has made a lot of Pokemon fan games before, so a variants based Pokemon fan game would be awesome.

In my opinion, this is too large for the pokemon games. I really really love this idea and strongly support it, but I don't see it being implemented in the games unless a console version is released or a Pokemon mmo. I believe Pokemon should remain in the handheld state though

It would be cool if it affected stats as well like if you wanted like an eevee with higher defense stats you would try to catch one somewhere with dangerous conditions. It would also be cool if you could send an egg to grow up somewhere so it can adapt to be a certain variant if you can't naturally catch it there, oooor possibly like artificial areas that very closely simulate those kinds of environments so you can get those variants like a day care but you drop off eggs and pick them up a certain amount of steps later.

Now they have officials variations for Vulpix/Ninetales, Sandshrew/Sandslash, and Executor on Pokemon Sun and Moon.

Ninetales/vulpix is my absolute favorite pokemon. I leveled up mine in X to 100 all by myself. Having an albino or winter version would be cooler than a shiny one!

It feels like a really cool extension of some form of forms in a way that's been hinted out by East and West sea forms Shellos, the various Vivillian forms, and the way Arbok's markings used to(?) change from region to region.

Pokemon variants is an amazing concept that would be fun to explore in a game. Though, it is highly unlikely to happen at all. Of course, it would make sense to keep it to were the varients still abide to the egg group rules of breeding. Another thing that would be nice is that there's a small percent chance the offspring could come out as the same specie as the mother or father. Giving a little more of a suprise factor to if it'll be a variant or not.

What about Burmy, Wormadam, Basculin, Shellos, Gastrodon, Flabebé, Florges, Vivillion, Deerling, Sawsbuck, Frillish, Jellicent ,Pyroar, Pumpkaboo and Gorgeist?

I for one don't think we need 50 to 100 new Pokemon every time a new game is released. There are what, close to 700 now? I think sequels to established games with cool features like this implemented would be much better. They should build more on the lore and story of Pokemon instead of just piling on more and more characters, Pokemon, and regions that have Pokemon that somehow no one has heard of until a remake is made and those Pokemon are in old regions (biggest plot hole in gaming right there). And what about the thing people have been wanting since Gen 3? A game with the entire Pokemon world. A legit Pokemon RPG where you can travel to every region and you can actually catch em all. I mean that is exactly what the anime is right? Ash travels the world and starts over at every new region?

every now and then i see some of those on my tumblr dash and i'm amazed everytime at how creative the pokemon fans are! this fanbase has spawned so many awesome ideas and art, it makes it all the more fun to be part of it!

Honestly I loved this idea ever since they started it with the seasonal Deerling and Sawsbuck. I think variations should definitely be a real thing!

I use to do something like when I was little, probably about 12 I had this book I use to draw in an I made multiple versions of Chikorita and its evolutions. I remember replacing the little leaf stuff around its neck with fire and water (possibly flying, but this was so long ago I forgot how many types I did) I wish I still had that book so I could share the pictures I drew.

I really like these and think they could add more to breeding and the game in general. The different location variants could have different stats, or even additional types depending on where they are found. For example, an artic Noctowl could be part ice type, and so on.

There actually is a see through frog (known as the glass frog), however it's primary skin tone is green rather than simply ghostly. The ghost frog, however is simply a brown and spotted frog that lives in heavily brown coated environments. There are quite of few different types of glass frogs as well. My personal favorite is the Hyalinobatrachium dianae, or Bare-hearted glass frog, which has a shocking resemblance to Kermit the Frog from the Muppets.

For the one about mating, what if we mated two of the mated one? A pure breed?

The ghost frogadier could actually be based on a real frog, called the glass frog ;)

Awesome, a few years back i started to share the idea of different pokemon subspecies or variants in different websites related to pokemon including youtube, pretty much based on the fact that animals have their own subspecies, some of them are even the same but they have variants, i''m glad that the idea finally took off and reached out to more people, i may not have been the only one nor the first one to have this idea, but at least i can say that i made an effort to share it as well :v

Variant's are super amazing for me to look at. My favorites are when the artists include a paragraph or so with flavor text on how the variations allow the pokemon to thrive in separate environments and situations. However the last ones that you showed with the crossbreeding I personally wouldn't classify as 'variants', those are 'hybrids' more than anything. Considering that crossbreeding pokemon would result in the probability of a type shift or change.

Think if there woud be a magical stone that a evil group woud steal and the stone woud combine two pokemons one time and the evil group tryes to combine two legendarys and destroy eart... BUT then you stop them and get to combine your pokemon with a legendary BEFORE a epic boss batle!!!! Is it a good story pokemon shoud hire me.

I love breeding pokemon, and I absolutely neeeeed those breeding variants. Also, the mixtures of Riolu/Lucario with Houndoom is amazing, as they are 2 of my 3 favorite pokemon, the other being Mew

This reminds me of the Pokemon anime when Ash and Misty went with Tracy around the Orange Islands. Pokemon like Vileplume, Butterfree, and Paras had variations due to the tropical climate and such. This is really freakin' cool.

I can kinda see them making a specific Pokemon that adheres to this, similar to Deerling and its season variants, and Castform with how it changes and adapts according to the weather. Eevee is rather close, but I imagine they'd make "The Adapting Pokemon", where you can find different variants of it across one single region, and it gets more and more scarce as you go further into the region. Like maybe the first variant you can find on the first two routes, it's actually one of those irritating rodents or birds that are in every game, and you can find this exact same Pokemon later in your adventures with a different appearance based on the surroundings. I can also see this Pokemon not having permanent forms (unless stored in a box), but changing form as you go to each different part of a region. Rather like Burmy, which changes depending on where you are battling. You catch this Pokemon early on, probably on one of the first five routes, or its given to you, and its in City Form, which is a Normal type (and is this way on most routes). But if you go to the Desert, the Beach, a Forest, a Cave, a mountain, or enter an open plain, it'll take on its Desert Form (Fire/Ground), its Seashore Form (Water), Woodland Form (Fairy/Grass), Cavern Form (Rock/Dark), Snow Form (Ice), and Meadow Form (Grass/Flying). Deserts are both hot and full of sand, hence the dual Fire/Ground typing. Woodland form gets part-Fairy because it feels like a lot of fairies and the like live in wooded areas. Caves are dark and full of rocks, that's self-explained, I think. Meadows tend to be huge, open spaces, so I kinda feel being part-Flying works for it. It also might gain Steel/Electric typing if you go into a Power Plant/Pokeball Factory, I dunno. City Form also might be Normal/Poison. It's all just an idea I built on based on the video. I think it might be called something akin to Adepite (A-D-P-T, the abbreviation for adaptation/adapt. This wouldn't be the first Pokemon to do that, as, off the top of my head, Eevee, Elgyem, and Beheeyem all do this). It almost sounds like a little bird-like Pokemon to me. Spends most of its time flightless, except when its looking at the big, expanse of sky...

There are also official Pokemon variations (Shellos, Burmy, etc.), but these are so creative and well-drawn! ADD THIS GAME FREAK!!! I also think the mix-breeding Pokemon is a great idea! It's more work, and needs more Pokedex entries, but people would love it. Game Freak needs this.

I want to include Pokémon variants in my fangame, but, as you mentioned, it would involve _so much extra work_. It'd be maddening.

I think for the breeding variations they'd be more so for the father's type and not the species. For example, a Pikachu breeding with a Water-type Pokémon could create a Water-type Pichu variant. Or maybe a Lucario with a Psychic-type Pokémon could create a Psychic-type Riolu variant. And maybe a Blaziken with a dual Dark/Ice Pokémon would have a 50/50 chance of creating either a Dark-Type Torchic Variant or an Ice-Type Torchic variant. It could even be the only way to get Pokémon with more than two types.

this is actually very cool. it's definitely a better fit in the universe then mega's but I do understand why whit the tremendous amount of work it would never make it. it's sad really all those forms an variants would open up so many really neat things.

i love the idea of pokemon variations, i know it would be hard for game freak to pull off atm with the 3d games, but the fan made games can implement this easier. another interesting way to include some of these would be to have them as alternate forms to easily show that a pokemon is a delta species

For the ghost frogadier, there are actually frogs that are completely see through. You can see their organs, skeleton, etc. you can order them through mail. They're pretty cool.

I think that Pokemon variations are a very cool concept, but if you think about it, we do already have this in some cases. Eevee's Pokedex entry in X version reads: A rare Pokémon that adapts to harsh environments by taking on different evolutionary forms. - While its not so easy to determine just what kinds of environments would have resulted in Espeon and Sylveon, it is clear that Vapoeron is an Eevee that has become aquatic, Flareon is an Eevee that lives in and around Volcanoes, Leafeon in forests and Glaceon in arctic and tundra conditions while Umbreon is clearly a nocturnal pokemon. At the same time you could argue that Poliwrath, Politoad, Toxicroak, Seismitoad and Greninja are just variations on each other, with all five pokemon likely sharing a common ancestor long ago that, over time, has developed into these five forms, with Poliwrath and Politoed being sister-species and Seismitoad being a close relation of them while Greninja and Toxicroak are closest to each other though, due to its typing laking water, Toxicroak is the one that has changed most form its base-form. Buneary is a rabbit adapted to forest life, Diggersby is adapted to live underground while Azumarill has become aquatic. Aurorus and Meganium are sauropods adapted to different areas (frozen and tropical respectively) while Tropius is a relation of Meganium that gained the power of flight. That said, variations are a good idea that I could see happening - you can't really argue that it would be hard work as in Generation 4 they went out of their way to make many pokemon appear different based on gender (though this has hardly been done since except in extreme cases) and they also make some pokemon change type upon mega evolution (Charizard X, Gyarados, Aggron, Sceptile, Altaria, Lopunny, Ampharos, Audino, Mewtwo X) so it can't be that hard to implement. As for move changes, it doesn't have to be that hard either as there is no need to go overboard with it. Arcanine naturally learns Thunder Fang, so maybe instead a Tundra Form Arcanine gets Ice Fang. Give it access to Avalanche and Blizzard and you're done. Form changes and changes to stats, moves and battle viability are nothing new to the franchise (Megas, Rotom, Giratina, Shaymin etc) so regional variation shouldn't be too hard to implement!

and they'd have to do different moves as well for them because cuz of where they're found and/or what pokemon were bred together because of the different body types some would be better at some attacks then others. It would be amazing, but I feel like it's more likely to happen in the anime then in the games.

There's also the problem if they gave pokemon that had megas variations, since they'd have to not only make the evolutionary chains 3d models bu models for the mega pokemon as well. Unless when you mega'd you'd go a set look of the pokemon, but I highly doubt game freak would do that if they ever did implement this into the games,

I freaking LOVE pokemon variations. By far my favourite art fad within the poke fandom thus far. I would love the breeding thing to be implemented in the game somehow, mostly because I'm just really into genetics. The idea of breeding one pokemon with another different pokemon and getting a new breed of pokemon is just the coolest idea ever to me. I would love a pokemon game like this. However, I don't think I would enjoy it if it were an actual canon game in the series. I'd like it more if it was like a spin-off game like pokemon snap. That way we could actually focus on it.

Actually we do have Pokémon variations, the Pokémon Arbok has different hood patters in each region as far as Sinnoh also if a ditto mates with a chikorita, you'd get another pure chikorita

I like this, but it would make Pokemon a bit more complicated than it already is. Plus, it would take a long time to include this in the games. I absolutely love the idea though!

I had no idea this was a thing and now I can't stop thinking about variations!

There are now the Alolan and Kantonian variations, but they are very particular ones like the Fairy/Ice Vulpix, it's cool but it means that each variation has to be worked on directly needs to have a difference in type. I actually wish that they would put something similar to 5:10, maybe dialing it down a bit. It would be interesting to have the Pokémon to be able to take after their parents, inheriting the species from the mother and some traits from the father besides IVs and moves. Slight color variations and small physical changes could be implemented without making the Pokémon unrecognizable, since egg groups are already a thing there could be some restrictions. It would also be nice to I could imagine something like having a Pokémon produced from breeding, say, a female Dragonite and a male Charizard, the resulting Pokémon could be a Dratini that has a color scheme closer to that of the Charizard line. In order to make all of the combinations they could add specific identifiers to each color so that when inherited it would pass on to it's equivalent. I don't think a Monster Rancher style mix and match would be possible, but just having a few colors pass from the parent Pokémon and maybe some small details such as eye shape in some cases would be a game changer, even if it's just a cosmetic change. Some other kind of variations could be model variation based on stats, like making the Pokémon grow in overall size the more base HP it has, or make it look a little slimmer the higher the Speed or having stronger, larger looking arms or whatever the particular Pokémon uses to strike the higher it's Attack stat. Again, no need for drastic changes, just a small sliding variation for a few key parts of the models would do. It will never happen, but it is nice to imagine the possibilities.

The largest problem with breeding changing the variant would be it would just advertise exactly what move set you are using in ranked play, since you often have egg moves on kits like those.

Looking back on this, they somewhat canonized this with the alolan forms.

This would be cool. Taking the idea behind Spinda, as you may or may not know that Spinda has alot of variations with the swirls all over its body, and run with that on the other Pokemon.

How ironic, an arctic vulpix, wouldn't that be the true cause of the melting icecaps in the pokemon world?

I would love this idea in the Pokemon Games. If they could make a bunch of Vivillon variations, and a bunch of useless Spinda variations, I think GameFreak can do it.

Probably the cllosest we'd get are the one's that could pass as a pallet swap. Like you said the other kinds of variations would require too much work and alteration. Hell the different breeds ones would be a total nightmare.

I like varients especially the habitat ones, and could be sort of ok with it, but theres a lot of different stat changes that come with some of these.

This is actually, to me, a lot more plausible than fusions. Because fusions get out of hand. But we've already had multiple examples of variations, like Vivillon and Sawsbuck and Pumkaboo and Gourgeist. I dont think it could be applied to all Pokémon and likely chances are it wouldn't be to every single stage of the evolution, as Mr. Buddy said that would take a lot of work for game freak. But for some Pokémon I really think it would work. All we can do is cross our fingers.

This could definitely be a spin of game idea. That way it wouldn't mess up the main games with the pokemon having different types and move sets depending on the variant. It wouldn't be that far from a stretch saying that it is possible, I mean there was the whole shadow pokemon thing in Pokemon DX Gale of Darkness and theres the capture stylus in the Pokemon Ranger series.

There are six pokemon I know of with variationsArbok has different markings based on region, Shellos and Gastrodon, depending on what side of the mountain your on , Burmy and Wormadam depending on where you last battled with it for the Burmy and when it evolves it stays that variation, and supposedly Spinda all have unique markings but not sure if that last one counts as a variation

I'd really love to see this now. And they could help reduce some of the work rather then having possibilities for every breeding pair, maybe reduce that down to a few variants like striped and not striped that can occur depending the parents. Rather then full traits from the parent species.

The GHOST variants are sick! That Teddiursa/Meowth was adorable though.

This would be extremely difficult to accomplish. Imagine 720ish Pokemon X 5-6 variants each. Yeah. About 4,000 different models and designs

You will be very happy then mate. Since the new Pokemon Games will actually do these. Like a Vulpix which migrated to higher and colder ground, and eventually become an Ice type with an altered sprite(though since 3D, I guess its model now?)

They actually wouldn't need to do that much if the variants were just recolors. If they had to be entirely new designs then yeah it's a lot of work. But color variants are quite easy to make. They use the exactly same sprites and animation just copy them over, change their colors, and done. That's the main reason why shiny Pok'emon are so common is because they don't have to do much to create them. But it would be nice if they had some other color variants especially since being color blind there were a lot of shiny Pok'emon I had that I didn't even know were shiny till someone pointed it out to me. I always thought Gyrados was the only Shiny Pok'emon since he's one of the first ones you see and the game actually made a big deal about pointing out it's red color (which I can actually see) but most of the other shiny Pok'emon look exactly the same. Unless I luck out and get one I can actually see, most of the time I didn't notice they existed. There are other variants that exist in the game already besides shiny Pok'emon as well. Which again suggests that simply changing their colors and creating more color variants wouldn't be that hard to implement.

I really wish they added something like this to the games, it would add so much more customizable and really awesome, and really all Nintendo has to do is slightly tweet and colour the Pokemon in a different way, even if it was one or two different variants, it would vastly impact the game and make it more realistic

my issue with this is what if i want a particular variation of a species of pokemon. i already hate having to wait in a game untill i can find the one i want. (ill make it through the first few gyms with the starter, just cuz i'll be on the hunt for that perfect ONE)

Much like how Gen VI tackled another step beyond evolution with mega evolution, with Gen VII I would love it if they took a back seat on making new pokemon and instead focused on these fan concepts a bit more, we already have variations with certain pokemon, many of them have already been mentioned here, but on the topic of breeding variation how I think it would work is that you have a different variation of the specific egg group that the breeding conspired in, and have a pure breed come from a ditto mating with any variation or pure breed. As well as with pokefusion, I think that it could be another great implementation in the games, however I think there would need to be limits on it, with the fanart literally any pokemon can go with any pokemon, if it were to appear I think there would need to be a lot more limiters on it, such as having it only available in battle, only final forms can do it, only pokemon that have the same primary types can do it, etc. I do think in order for pokemon to stay fresh and relevant, these types of additions are necessary, for now it's all about waiting for the next big change.

I was thinking about different Gliscor variants before this weirdly! Regular Forest- Fully resists Grass and is better at maneuvering and learns more flying move Beach- Resists water and can swim well and has a slightly lighter color and blue eyes. Learns water attacks

I love these ideas! But it'd make it harder to complete the pokedex, and harder to get that thing that lets you get a shiny Pokémon.

This would be cool, but I kinda feel that's all it would be. It'd mainly just be aesthetic, and would require a lot of programming, even if only the ones shown in the vid could be susceptible. Unless of course, they might gain some typing to go with their appearance, but that'd just require even more programming. Hmm. Then, on top of the regular variation sprites, they'd have to make one of each for the shiny version of each Pokemon.

They already did this a few times with Shellos/Gastrodon, Baculin, and Spinada but I agree it would be interesting if they implemented this into future generations of games.

Then no. of pokemon will be 7000+. It's a nightmare for any trainer to breed or find all the pokemon variations for the pokedex.

Someone should made a romhack of this. Literally same game as one of the originals, just with different, area based sprites. I think that would be uber awesome. It would be like replaying the nostalgic games, but with a whole new look to a bunch of pokemon!

Best pokemon breeding variations post I've seen was for Skitty and it involved the Abomination variant for the Skitty/Wailord breeding.
